Planar cohort "acts as" a cohort? [Archive] - Wizards Community

The Thaumaturgist prestige class ability Planar Cohort says something odd. It says that you use Planar Ally (greater, lesser or standard) to summon an outsider to "act as" you cohort. Can anyone answer this question, or does anyone know of an official clarification?

Does this mean that the creature follows all the rules of a cohort? For example, does it gain experience at the rate indicated in the DMG or no?

As an aside, I am really very irritated that the DMG does not allow a player to build his/her own cohort. What the hell were they thinking?

I would strongly assume yes. That seems to be the intention of the ability.

Cohorts are not your characters. They are NPCs. While loyal to you, have their own lives, histories, personalities, and agendas; and many of those factors may highly depend on the campaign. As the DMG suggests, you try to attract a with particular talents, and you are not obligated to settle on a cohort who does not meet your needs. But if you want more influence into your cohorts development, nothing is stopping you from giving your cohort suggestions on how to develop his/her/it's abilities, or giving/trading/loaning items to your cohort as well.
