2) Read this. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=709233) Especially see the 5th and 9th level abilities -- the former in the context of Dal Quor or Xoriat, and the latter in the context of Fernia (the efreet), amongst other planes.

Ten seconds using the stickies on the Character Optimization boards (i.e. where the most work regarding strong build techniques are developed and the regulars have a strong sense of what is and isn't possible in the rules) would have gotten you all of this information.

Basically put, its considered the ONLY prestige class released since the creation of 3.0 which is outright better than the base class.

Druid 10/Planar Shepherd 10 >>>>>>>> Druid 20

Pretty much something which is unheard of in term of prestige clases that the druid has access to.
