Hello,

Please rate this PrC and tell me your opinion about it. It is intended for Sorcerers and Bards mainly. It's done by my friend who asked me to post it here. When I am done with editing and making it readable I'll make PEACH thread about it.

Dragon Blooded PrC

The Dragonblooded Occasionally, there are sorcerers that feel the stirrings of their draconic hertiage within their heart. Where other mages satisfy themselves with gaining arcane knowledge through study, the dragonblooded seek to magnify and exemplify their own draconic heritage. The dragonblooded prefer a life of adventure, and many sorcerers (and no few bards) seek out this route to power, finding the physical enhancements appealing when combined with the continued powers of the arcane that flows in their blood.

Requirements

Race: Any non-dragon (cannot already be a half-dragon)

Skills: Knowledge (arcana) 10 ranks, Speak Language (Draconic)

Feats: Spell Focus (any one school), Spell Penetration

Spells: Ability to cast 4th level arcane spells without preparation

Special: When the character is created, or through the course of RP, the character must have a dragon type in mind before taking this class, subject to DM approval. This is based on the background of the PC, as well as the RP performed.

Abilities

Hit Dice: d6

Skills: Concentration, Craft, Diplomacy, Knowledge, Listen, Profession, Scry, Search, Speak Language, Spellcraft, and Spot

Skill Points: 2 + Int modifier

(yeah I know horrible formatting... sorry)

Special Features

Weapons and Armor Proficiency: The dragonblooded gain no additional proficiency in weapons or amor.

Spells Per Day: At every odd numbered level, the dragonblooded gain spells per day as if they gained a level in their arcane spellcasting class. Unlike other prestige classes, this increase only applies to the dragonblooded’s bard or sorcerer class. They don’t gain the other abilities of the class, just increasing their spells per day and their known spells.

Natural Armor (Ex): Beginning at 1st level, the Dragonblooded’s skin toughens and hardens a bit. It attains a hue that reflects the character’s draconic heritage, though she doesn’t actually gain scales, her skin instead becoming tough and almost leathery. This adds +1 to the Dragonblooded’s natural armor rating, which increases to +2 at 4th level, and +3 at 7th level.

Ability Boost (Ex): The Dragonblooded begins to enhance her attributes, drawing on the innate abilities of her draconic heritage. At 3rd level, she gains an inherent +2 bonus to Charisma, the draw and presence of her ancestor’s majesty filling her being. Her Strength increases with a +2 inherent bonus at 6th level, and her Constitution increases with a +2 inherent bonus at 9th level.

Wings (Ex): At 7th level, the Dragonblood grows wings out of her back, colored brightly in the manner of their dragon forebear. She can now fly at her normal ground speed (good manueverability), and can also learn flying feats from the Monster Manual, including Hover and Wingover.

Spell Knowledge (Su): At 2nd level, and again at 5th and 8th levels, the Dragonblood can begin to call on the magical heritage of their draconic ancestors. They may know an additional spell of any level that they can cast, provided that it is a bard or sorcerer spell.

Draconic Heritage (Ex): At 10th level, the dragonblooded draws upon the strength of their ancient heritage, gaining immunity to the attack type of his/her specific draconic heritage. In addition, the Dragonblooded no longer suffers from aging penalties. Bonuses still accrue, and the Dragonblooded still dies when their time is up.

1) Check out the sticky "PrC Builder's Cheat Sheet" for a format. You need a table and some better headings.

2) This is the Dragon Disciple but better. Strictly better.

Not that dragon disciple was that amazing in the first place. . .

I'd probably allow it - at least experimentally - in my games, But I run pretty high-powered adventures.

The prereq of the arcane non-prep is a little vague: you should specify exactly what qualifies (as a Wizard, I can 1-level dip it with Alacritious Congitation, for example).

I can't imagine anyone taking it as is: there's too much spellcasting levels lost in a class that requires too much spellcasting to get in (if you made the prereq "Arcane CL 8", then it might be used). If it were an 8/10 or 4/5 spellcasting class, it might be worth it. The best part is the Spell Knowledge, but thats limited to a small list. People are going to 3-level dip it and that's it, or not take it at all. Str bonus doesn't fit to me...

I agree it feels like the Dragon Disciple, but I think thats a bad thing... Perhaps require Draconic Heritage, and award Draconic feats instead of draconic-like abilities?

Actually I think as is it is a great Class for the Duskblade. By the time they get 4th level spells they already have their main ability. Of course they give up a few things, but the ability to add more powerful spells to their list is worth the trade off.

. . . I agree it feels like the Dragon Disciple, but I think thats a bad thing... Perhaps require Draconic Heritage, and award Draconic feats instead of draconic-like abilities?I agree with most of your other criticisms here, but handing out feats is, as another poster has said, handing out gift certificates because you can't think of anything else.

Requirements

Race: Any non-dragon (cannot already be a half-dragon)

Feats: Spell Focus (any one school), Spell Penetration
Spells: Ability to cast 4th level arcane spells without preparation

To be nit picky, is it any non dragon or is it not a half dragon? There are some draconic creatures that aren't half dragons, such as anything with the draconic creature template.

Skill prereqs mean level 7 to qualify. Alright.

Spell focus might be somewhat useless on a sorcerer, so I'll think of that as an opportunity cost. It's maybe not so much of one on bards, since they've got at least a couple of spells from the same schools as they level, such as illusion and enchantment.

Fourth level spells mean a sorcerer/warmage/beguiler/dread necro of level 8 or 10 levels in bard. That's a pretty hefty investment. Lets see what you get for that.

Average base attack, good will save, bad reflex and fortitude, a d6 hit die, poor skill points, better skills than a sorcerer but worse than a bard, half casting, natural armor, flight much later than everyone is casting it, immunity to one energy type, up to three extra spells, and stat boosts to two classes that aren't primarily fighting classes.

I like the idea, but the execution is poor.

I'd suggest two different sets of prerequisites (and lowering them a little), kind of like the ruthar out of races of the wild. You could have the ability to cast third level spells spontaneously or the ability to use bardic music to cast suggestion.

The chasis for this is not bad. If you're intending sorcerers and bards to go into this, an average or a poor base attack is fine, d6 is fine, the saves are fine... I'd suggest 4 + int for skill points. Also as a casting prc, give casting almost at full, but I suggest dropping it levels 1 and 6, so that there's a little more motivation to finish the class rather than dip... and they have to really want it.

I'd also suggest raiding some monster manual entries, or, at the risk of being a little hypocritical, some of the draconic heritage feats to come up with some thematically similar, though mechanically different draconic abilities, and have those as options at many levels or come up with one or two that scale well. And throw in a good mix of things so that you'll have options that play to both the sorcerer and the bard's strengths.

Since dragons have a frightful presence ability I can see that really going well with bards. And don't be afraid of the non standard dragons. Where are the shadow heritages or the thorn heritages or the gem heritages? WE DEMAND REPRESENTATION... I mean they do. :shifty:
