Hello--
I'm just wondering if anybody knows of any good prestige classes for Scouts, aside from Order of the Bow Initiate. OotBI seems more for fighters who specialize in archery: It even says so in the class description.

Any help is appreciated.

one option is the dervish; the additional damage bonus that scouts get when they move is excellent for the dervish, who gets their full round of attacks plus a move action

I think Highland Stalker (comp adv) is the 'official' scout prc, full skirmish progression and stuff, but I'm not to sure if the prc is as good as scout.
Another option is the Peregrine Runner (Races of Stone), full skirmish prog there aswell. Think you have to be goliath though...

In my opinion the best scout prc is Ranger...:P Take the Swift Hunter feat from Complete Scoundrel and you're good to go.
Could even make a twf Ranger 2/Scout 4/Dervish X

Scout is one of the few classes that is nice all the way up to 20th.

Unless you are a melee scout. Then you get stuck with only one attack unless you pay through the nose for sprint feats granting extra attacks. Usually easier to pick up dervish.

Aren't dervishes primarily melee?

I made a scout that I'm intending to be a sniper, only he doesn't just make one attack. I got the feats needed for Shot on the Run, and got SotR, and I was figuring that I'd get Improved Skirmish next level (the scout's 7th level).

Something that is based around making a single, devastating attack then diving back under cover would be ideal.

Like Garonak said, Highland stalker realy gives u the added skirmish bonuses with ac bonuses and some fun surefooted and swift tracker abilites without all the scout extra garbage some peopl dont like.

Highland Stalker looks cool. I think I'll try that out.

I prefer Scout to Highland Stalker.

Well, with Swift Hunter introduced, there is almost no reason to do that.

My opinion? Don't take a PrC, Scout continues to have interesting abilities into higher levels.

Despite what most people seem to be saying, scout 20 is still entirely viable and, unlike a lot of non-casters who get boring and repetitive class features, fairly fun the entire way.

I'd say Highland Stalker for a less explore-y more hunter-y scout.

Also, the OotBI wouldn't say anything about scouts, they weren't published yet when it came out.

I actually have to say that I do not enjoy this new "swift hunter" feat. It's turned the class into yet another dip for all of the optimisers (either that or it turns the ranger into a dip, no one splits them evenly). I don't mind optimisation itself, but I detest dipping and that feat essentially begs for it. I also fail to see how it makes sense to create a feat combining two extremely similarly themed classes (imagine a feat giving extra benefits to multiclassing as a wizard and a sorceror, it would be dumb) and thereby eliminating the key differences (lack of spells and animal companion for scout, lack of significant extra damage and mobility for ranger).

Indeed, blindsight 30 as a capstone ability is about as good as it gets for a non-caster.

An interesting option for a scout who wants a PrC is the elven Wildrunner, or another class with pounce (OA Singh rager, for example). A TWF melee scout can definitely benefit from doing full attack on a charge, imo. It is particularly useful to scout using the Swift X feats and are a multiclass scout anyway. Wildrunners are imo a nice way to play with the "nice elf" cliche.

I really appreciate all the advice that has been give, but I bring bad news...

Our group had a meeting last night, and my character died. The bard decide d, out of the blue, to fascinate the warmage, and the warmage failed his save. The bard then used suggestion on said warmage, and had him break-dance while casting empowered fireburst. We were fighting two enemies whose names escape me this entire time. A bhargest or something and something else. Everybody, including the monsters, were clustered together in something like a 20ft by 20ft square. (4 squares by 4 squares).

The damage comes out to 53. I, the scout, roll my Reflex save with a +10 bonus. The DC is 18, and my roll is 2. I'm brought down to -4 hp, unconcious and dying. The monk, meanwhile, rolled a 5 with a +10 bonus also, and was brought down to -20 something, totally dead. The stupid rogue made his save, rolling a 15 with a +10 bonus, and was dealt no damage because he had evasion. The bard made his, took half damage anyway since it was that type of reflex save, but did not die. The warmage himself, allowed no saving throw (the bard made him cast the spell into the square he was break-dancing on), was brought down to 1 hp.

I would have survived, but unfortunately no one was able to stop laughing long enough to heal me, so I died.

What is really maddening is that I realized this morning that the warmage couldn't have cast the spell. The warmage is 6th level, and can only cast 3rd level spells as his highest level spells. The Empower Spell feat increases the spell's level by two, making the fireburst, a 2nd level spell for him, a 4th level spell.

But it's too late to do anything, since the ex-monk has already started making his new character and is hooked on it.

Might be some tense issues in this post, but I'll get back to them later.

Try to get a raise. If you've got a cool DM you could probably just talk to him/her about it, alert them of the rules imbalance, and find a way to get your character back to life.

I was going to mention that warmages get Sudden Empower as a bonus feat...but then I noticed he was a level too low (they get it at 7th level).

I hope you had as good a laugh as the rest 'cause I'd have kicked the bard in the head, and by that I mean the player, not the character.

By the way, who was supposed to be healing you? Or was there a Cleric not caught in the burst?

Also, really, if players RL are having a laughing fit, in-game time really should pause. I doubt the monk was laughing in-game, since he was quite dead, but I am guessing the player was.

It's also interesting to note that Fireburst cannot be cast "into a square", the spell description specifically states the burst of fire emanates from you. It is impossible by spell description to include the caster. I quote (SC p93, bold emphasis mine) "All creatures and objects within that area except for you and any creatures that share your space. The warmage shouldn't have not been allowed a saving throw, he shouldn't have been affected at all.

Incidentally here's a quote from the Suggestion spell (bold emphasis mine):
"Asking the creature to stab itself, throw itself onto a spear, immolate itself, or do some other obviously harmful act automatically negates the effect of the spell."
Even if the Warmage would've been allowed to burn himself with the Fireburst, he'd never have cast the spell, the suggestion would've been broken.

As if the entire situation wasn't wrong enough as it is, this is Suggestion, not Dominate Person. Even Dominate Person allows "any subject forced to take actions against its nature receives a new saving throw with a +2 bonus". Requesting the Warmage to potentially wipe out the party is as unreasonable as suggestions get, and unless he was inclined to do so voluntarily, far beyond the power of Suggestion, creating a situation that would cause a higher level Compulsion spell to call for a new save. That new save was the least your DM should've allowed, IMHO.

This situation reeks. Badly. I suppose you can have a good laugh when you don't take the rules too narrowly, but I get the impression you're not laughing as much as the rest.

A PC in my group played one.

Arc Phitter, CG Human
Ranger 5/ Order of the Bow Initiate 5/ Scout 2

He also had the legacy Item "Bow of the Black Archer" so he ws intensly dangerous! He was a great character until he got taken out in a duel with a Hogoblin Warblade.

Actually, this is where it gets wonky. You guys were in combat. Fascinate cannot be used in combat (PHB26).

Death by Knobend and Misadjudication of the Rules...that bites.

But if you were still interested in the Scout, as has been said, it's one of the few classes worth taking to 20th. For me, it's probably one of the most enjoyable classes to progress - every level of the class entices you to take it rather than PrC out - there are no 'dead levels'...you get something that really adds to the character every step of the way (and those 8+Int skill points are yum-yum-tasty-good :D ).
