Probably a stupid question, but... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I know this is probably a stupid question, but I haven't seen anything to contradict it. Is there anything prohibiting someone from taking the same class or prestige class more than once? For example, someone takes Master Thrower, but wants to get more than 3 of the thrown weapon tricks. After getting to Master Thrower 5, can someone take Master Thrower again, starting back at level 1 to pick up more of the abilities? I don't think this would work with a base class, as those don't have a termination point, but it might for a prestige class since they have a definate end point.

In summary is it possible to go Fighter1/Master Thrower 5/Master Thrower 1?

No, just as it isn't possible for a fighter to start over when he hits level 3. Mind you, one could make an identical class and rename it, and then it would technically be legal. But it goes against common sense.

Once you hit epic levels, then yes you could take master thrower level 6+

wow I wonder... how much better would the figher class be if just gave them a free feat every level :P

As I said, I didn't think it would apply to a base class, precisely because of this (a Wizard20/Wizard1 would be better than Wizard21, etc), but because most prestige classes end at 5 or 10 levels, and in certain cases (like Master Thrower) there are more options than levels in which you gain those options. If someone wanted to gain those, how would they go about it? And I don't think Master Thrower 6, even at epic level, is ever going to happen, as it doesn't get any bonuses that I am aware of.

Actually, only PrC with 10 levels can continue to be taken post-epic.

But on the other hand, aren't you allowed to take Exotic Weapon Master multiple times, as long as you are entering the class with a new weapon each time (by that I mean, take the class and learn three tricks with the broadblade short sword, and then take the class again to learn three tricks with the elven thinblade). I don't know (nor do I have Complete Warrior out right now), so I may be entirely wrong.

Personally I'd just talk to the DM about making a MT6 and up where the bab progression and saves continued gaining the numerical progression abilities like I assume that the thrower gets the trick at every odd numbered level correct? it wouldn't break the game and it would look a lot better that F5/MT5/MT1

By the rules in Complete Adventurer only 10 level classes can be expaned and only after 21st level.

Isn't the whole point of having more options than levels to get them to allow player customizability. Otherwise, everyone will be the exact same from prestige classes (like arcane archer). Of course this is...

I think it would be simpler if you gave the class abilities of exotic weapons master prequisites and turned them into feats...

Just a thought...

Read the Player Handbook, page 58. When a character gets new level, he may either get the next level of a class he currently has (if it has next level), or take 1st level in other class. No third option was given.
