REVEL MASTER of OLIDAMMARA

At one time, the mere mention of Olidammara in certain towns or regions was considered a social taboo. As the god of thieves, his name was sure to bring a horde of brigands down on one’s head. Of course, these were almost always communities of the stodgiest conservatives that seldom cared for Olidammara’s other, more social endeavors: music, dancing, wine, luck, food, and merrymaking. This sad state of affairs may have continued to this day had it not been for one such community, the unfortunate town of Delgath.

Over the course of a very few years, Delgath had suffered drought, famine, goblin raids, plague, and the death of their high priest. Believing themselves cursed, the citizenry of Delgath sought relief from their hardships. They hired clergy of all the “acceptable” gods to come bless their town, in hopes that it might improve their destiny, but to no avail. Finally, a wandering priest of Fharlanghn happened to offer up a prayer to the Laughing Rogue over a glass of wine at supper one evening. The frightened, shushing response he received convinced him that the good people of Delgath had snubbed Olidammara for so long that there was no longer any luck to be found there. After much explaining to the town council what the problem was, it was agreed that a blessing from Olidammara was needed.

To keep the fears of the townsfolk at ease, an Olidammaran priest specializing in music was found and asked to bless Delgath. To everyone’s surprise, the priest said that nothing short of a full-blown revel, complete with games, music, wine, and dancing would suffice to return the favor of his god to the accursed town. This was totally unacceptable, at least until a stray family of bulettes ate or drove off most of the cattle in the outlying farms. Suddenly, even the most stern of Delgath’s residents were willing to give the minstrel-priest’s idea a chance. He led the town in a three-day party the likes of which even he himself had never seen.

On the fifth day, when folks were finally sober enough to return to their daily routines, their luck had indeed changed for the better. Missing cattle came wandering back home, the local river had begun to flow again, area crops seemed healthier, and a wandering group of adventurers had wiped out the local goblin tribe. Other towns and villages in the region were quick to follow suit and soon both the luck festival and the modern revel master were born.

Each community has different names, seasons, and expectations for their luck festival, though there are certain constants. Whether it’s called a feast of fools, a rogue’s revel, or just a mid-season frolic, there must be drinking, feasting, dancing, and music. Most involve light-hearted games, such as pie-eating contests and limerick competitions. Many call for costumes, or at least masks, while others may require a dish to pass, or even a symbol of Olidammara sewn on one’s topcoat. Traditionally, a nod is made to Olidammara’s prankster side with larks such as hiding frogspawn in the mayor’s pants or painting a nobleman’s horse pink, though never anything mean-spirited. In addition, Olidammara himself frowns upon thievery of any kind at such functions, since such activity would only serve to discourage future celebrations, though most honest citizens aren’t necessarily aware of this detail.

Today revel masters are common enough that most counties have their own and most cities have several, usually specializing in a particular type of performance. They are generally referred to by location, and even specialty, such as the revel master of Tannith County, or the City of Greyhawk’s mistress of revels and insults. As ambassadors of drinking and merriment, revel masters seldom need worry about lodgings or food, as any tavern would be happy to house them in exchange for the music and levity that follows them. Indeed, in some areas, taverns have been known to fight viciously over the opportunity to house a visiting revel master. Nobles, wineries, and even lonely old spinsters have also been known to offer revel masters their hospitality, though not quite so aggressively.

While full-fledged clergy of Olidammara, they are tasked with improving his image in the world rather than converting followers. For this reason, very little is made of Olidammara’s ties to thievery, and, in many regions, they prefer to refer to Olidammara as simply their “boss”. Though able to perform most ceremonies, revel masters usually share such duties with priests of other faiths, taking the more light-hearted portion for themselves. A Peloran cleric might perform an actual wedding, or a follower of Wee Jas may conduct a funeral, but a revel mistress is the one who takes charge of the reception or the wake. Other, more secular duties are determined by region, since many communities like to call upon their revel master to be a judge of food, wine, or music competitions at county fairs or similar functions.

Being the free spirits they are, some revel masters choose to wander the wide world rather than settle down into a single community. These wandering revel masters are sources of news and gossip for most folk, new songs and games for others of their kind, and perhaps the best entertainment those on the edges of civilization will have for months at a time. In addition, such individuals are called upon by their patron to uphold his best interests wherever they may roam. Those who abuse the gifts of Olidammara are given an unpleasant object lesson, so that they may quickly learn to appreciate what the Laughing Rogue offers.

Adaptation: The revel master prestige class combines features of both the bard and the cleric, allowing a multiclass bard/cleric to be as effective as his single-class counterparts. With slight changes, the class is suitable for PCs who worship other deities of music or wine, or even those of community.
Hit Die: d6.

CLASS FEATURES
All of the following are class features of the revel master prestige class.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: revel masters gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor.

Spells per Day/Spells Known: At 1st level, and every three levels thereafter, a revel master gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if he had also gained a level in any one arcane spellcasting class and any one divine spellcasting class to which he belonged before adding the prestige class level. If he had more than one arcane spellcasting class or divine spellcasting class before becoming a revel master, he must decide to which class to add each revel master level for the purpose of determining spells per day, spells known, and overall caster level. At all other levels, he may choose to do this with any one spellcasting class to which he belonged before adding the prestige class level. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained.

For example, a 3rd-level bard/4th-level cleric/4th-level revel master could choose to cast spells as a 5th level bard and 8th level cleric, 6th level bard and 7th level cleric, or as a 7th level bard and a 6th level cleric.

Bardic Music: A revel mistress adds her revel mistress level to her bard level to determine the number of times per day she can use her bardic music, the bardic music abilities she can employ, and the power of those abilities. For example, a 5th-level bard/4th-level cleric/3rd-level revel mistress can use her bardic music eight times per day, can use any bardic music ability an 8th-level bard could use (assuming she meets the Perform skill rank requirements), and is treated as an 8th-level bard for adjudicating the effects of those abilities (such as number of targets, save DC, and so forth).

Soothing Song (Su): A 4th level revel master with 10 or more ranks in perform, can calm the emotions of those around them. Anyone within 30 ft. that is suffering from an emotion-affecting effect, such as being shaken or panicked, may immediately make a second saving throw using the revel master’s Perform check in place of their own save. If the effect allowed no saving throw, then this ability has no effect.

Distracting Ditty (Su): A revel master of 9th level or higher with at least 15 ranks in a Perform skill can inhibit spellcasting. Any enemy within 30 feet attempting to cast a spell during a distracting ditty must make a Concentration check with a DC equal to the revel master’s Perform check to avoid losing the spell. A revel master can keep up his jarring song for 10 rounds.

Healing Wine (Sp): A careless drunk injuring himself can ruin a good party. For this reason, at 1st level a revel mistress can imbue one bottle of wine each day, plus an additional bottle for every 3 levels, with healing properties. With just a swig and a prayer, she grants the power of a goodberry to a number of swigs equal to her revel mistress level plus her Cha bonus.

Bardic Knowledge (Ex): A revel mistress talks to a lot of people, seeking out incredible tales, and politely suffers through drunken stories of every stripe. She can attempt to recall some relevant piece of information about local notable people, legendary items, or noteworthy places. See the bard class feature, page 28 of the Player’s Handbook. Beginning at 2nd level, she adds half her revel mistress class level (round down) to her bardic knowledge checks, so her bardic knowledge checks have a bonus equal to her bard level + 1/2 her revel mistress level + her Int modifier.

Just Knock ‘em Cold (Ex): Revel masters sometimes have to find a nonlethal way of dealing with drunken idiots who want to fight. Starting at 3rd level, a revel master can use a melee weapon that deals lethal damage to deal nonlethal damage instead without taking the usual –4 penalty on his attack roll.

Blessing of Luck (Su): Starting at 2nd level, a revel mistress can call upon the power of Olidammara momentarily improve someone's odds at performing a difficult task. A number of times per day equal to her Cha bonus, she may grant another individual a temporary luck bonus to any one skill equal to half her levels of revel mistress (rounded down). This bonus lasts for up to one minute, or until the task has been completed, whichever comes first. This ability does not work upon the revel mistress herself, only upon other people.

Example, a bard 3/cleric 3/revel mistress 6 with an 18 Charisma can grant others a +3 luck bonus 4 times a day.

Prank-stidigitation (Sp): Starting at 6th level, a revel master gains a limited form of prestidigitation. Three times each day, as a free action, he may produce a minor magical effect that causes an amusing, silly, or slight embarrassing effect. This effect can extend farther than a standard prestidigitation spell, but all of its effects last no more than one hour. Some perfect examples of this ability include turning a paladin’s drink to hard liquor to help him loosen up, protecting all of one’s allies from the rain except the barbarian because he needs a shower, or making the mouth piece on another minstrel’s instrument taste like lemons since he plays so many sour notes.

Once each week, should the revel master have caused others to laugh out loud, particularly at themselves, he is granted a single use of greater prank-stidigitation. This can take almost any form, as long as it’s funny. If a rogue cannot unlock a door, the revel master might walk up and turn the handle, revealing it to have suddenly unlocked. If a politician acts particularly pompous, he may be visited by a loud, smelly bout of flatulence that lasts a full hour.

Under no circumstances can either form of prank-stidigitation can create a harmful, malicious, or vindictive effect. Any attempt to do so strips a revel master of his powers for a full week.

Free Spirit (Ex): By 4th level, a revel mistress has shown the resolve to follow a deity most people shun, to do so openly, and to not follow the most common path that deity offers. As a person who refuses to be bound by unwanted restrictions, she gains a sacred bonus equal to her Cha bonus on all saves and checks to avoid being restrained or controlled, either magically or physically. Tanglefoot bags, enchantments, and grappling creatures find a revel mistress to be difficult to hold on to.

Animate Instrument (Sp): Eventually, even a seasoned revel master needs to take a break from playing, whether to drink, dance, or just stretch the fingers. At 5th level, a revel mistress can spend a daily use of her bardic music to enable a musical instrument with the ability to play at her command. This instrument can play a tune on her behalf even while she is busy with other actions. As long as this ability is in effect she can cause the affected instrument to begin playing as a free action, effectively mimicking and continuing her performance (at the same Perform result as hers, if one has been made). Once the animated instrument picks up the performance, she does not have to continue concentrating to maintain its effect. Thus, she does not need to concentrate to continue a performance or bardic music effect (that relies on the use of a musical instrument) and may cast spells or activate magic items. She may not, however, make further use of bardic music while an animated instrument continues a bardic music effect.

She can animate any nonmagical musical instrument, such as a piano, fiddle, or harp. If the instrument must be carried or held while played, it floats in the air in the square in which she began the effect. The animated instrument cannot move. The instrument continues to play for a number of rounds equal to her revel master level plus Cha modifier or a creature succeeds at a touch attack to ruin its tune. An animated instrument's AC is 10 plus any relevant size modifiers (most hand-held instruments are Small, giving them a +1 size bonus to AC).

Bonus Domain: Music is an important part of any revel master’s doctrine. A revel master who reaches 7th level is granted the Music domain (see below) as a third cleric domain. He can use the granted power of the new domain, and he can choose from the spell lists of three domains when selecting his domain spells for the day.

Increased Volume (Su): At 8th level, a revel mistress learns how to speak over a loud crowd of drunken merrymakers. At will, she can lower the DC of any listen check to hear her by 10. Additionally, by spending one use of bardic music, she can increase the area of effect of a bardic music effect by an additional 50%. For example, she could increase the range of her countersong ability to 45 ft.

Olidammara Laughs Last (Sp): The ultimate duty of a revel master is to prevent Olidammara’s image from being soiled. As such, at 10th level, a revel master is granted the ability to exact justice on behalf of his patron deity. Of course, being the capricious god he is, Olidammara prefers poetic justice to any other form. When encountering someone who misuses the Laughing Rogues gifts, such as a man who sells bad wine as good, uses music to dishearten others, interferes with honest merrymaking, performs mean-spirited or dangerous pranks, or acts in an overtly miserly manner, it falls upon the revel master to offer up a lesson to the heretic that will not soon be forgotten. What form such a lesson may take is up to the revel master, but it must be in keeping with the nature of the transgression.

A pickpocket who tries his luck during a festival presided over by a revel master may find that all he’s managed to steal are several dozen live mice, while his victims now share what wealth he had when he arrived. A wine merchant who tries to swindle a buyer could easily find that he has accidentally loaded the buyer’s cart with wine worth hundreds of times what was paid. A minstrel who seeks to spread despair with his music finds folks tipping him handsomely for the lively tune he suddenly realizes he’s been playing. Each of these people then find the symbol of Olidammara revealed to them; in the fur of the mice, on the label of wine, stamped on a coin fished out of the tips.

This ability may be used as often as needed, but there are both dangers and rewards to its use. If used to properly punish a transgressor, a revel master gains a divine bonus to their Charisma based on the severity of the transgression and the appropriateness of the punishment. If used to punish those who have done no wrong, or the punishment has nothing to do with the crime, the revel master instead receives a divine penalty to their Charisma. In either case, this last one week and is seldom more than a +3 bonus, and never higher than +3. The exact bonus or penalty is to be determined by the DM.

Interesting combination.
I understand how the caster level idea works, but I don't really understand why it is done like that. I say a full progression on both ends, like mystic threugre would be ideal, but then again this class isnt too much about the spells. But i like casting spells =D.

I think it would be interesting to increase caster level without giving additional spells, so CL is equal to your perform check, but you only get to advance one level in a spellcasting class (for the purpose of gaining spells) per level in this PrC.
Description: The Laughing Rouge has made you a potent spellcaster in relation to your performance abilities. Everytime you cast a spell, you use your base perform ranks as your caster level (the highest perform only) instead of any other caster level. In addition, the Laughing Rouge likes to observe inginuity and wishes to challenge your spell casting selection. You gain one level in a pervious divine or arcane spell casting class only for the purpose of determining what level spell you can cast, and how many you can cast, you otherwise gain no other benifits from that class.

I would also consider including spellcasting with required verbal/lyric components, instead of spell components (to the limit of 1 GP), and the use of a musical instrument as a focus (the instrument must be at least equall to, if not greater than the required foci's value).
Description: Your music guides you on your divine and arcane paths, and the Laughing Rogue grants you additional flexibilities as you activly participate in the world. You now can use your instrument as a replacement for any foci you would normally need (limit to the instrument's cost), and you may sing and perform instead of adding in mundane spell components (up to 1 GP).

It would be interesting if you could channel a spell through song, thereby making the ability manifest in an "extraordinary" way, not being able to be counterspelled, dispelled, or interupted (as long as you have either your instrument being played, your holy symbol out and uttering a prayer, or have the ability to sing). In turn you would have to give up a bardic music or a turn attempt.
Description: Your spells become as fluid and second nature as your music and your faith. Eminating from your voice or musical instrument, the spell manifests as a fantastic beat through which your allies and enimies are adversely affected. The Laughing Rouge allows you to cast a spell as an extraordinary ability in exchange for etheir a turn attempt or a bardic music.

Thats all I can think about

Lose the Turn Undead ability. Of all the gods, only Pelor's specialty priests (Radiant Servants) have that ability. If it doesn't fit Hieroneous, it sure won't fit Olidammara!!!

Instead try a luck based ability. It's the one aspect you forgot. Maybe a blessing or something....

Excellent idea!! Thanks, I hadn't really looked at the other specialty priests. The luck thing makes a lot more sense.
