Ronin-Underpowered? [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-02-08, 10:20 AM I like the flavour of the Ronin (CW, ex-samurai prestige class, although you dont have to be a ex-samurai to take levels in it) and would like to use it in a campeign, but it seems both under powered and contradictive. Someone with sneak attack generally doesnt charge much. Am I right or is the class fine as it is, if not have there been any fixes of this?

02-02-08, 10:37 AM I think the reasoning behind sneak attack for ronin is that they have lost their honor and now they don't mind using dirty tricks as for the class it's self, it's not that bad of a class if already have 11 lvl's of samurai and you don't fell like walking around with a stick up your a$$ anymore.

02-02-08, 11:55 AM I'd say it's definitely more powerful than the CW samurai class, mind you ;) . Anyway, the charge and SA are just different aspects that they learn - as people who are dishonered they can sometimes be reckless or play dirty. You don't have to use the two at once, just to know how to do them.

Unless this is a town guard, why the Nine Hells would you have this many Samurai levels? Hell, why would this number be above i?

Sneak attack is more than "i dont mind fighting dirty", its "iv spend alot of time studying living beings and know exactly where it hurts them the most". Kicking dust into someones eyes or kicking the groin is dirty, sneak attack is far more refined. heck theres even a feat called dirty fighting. Its like sneak attack, but not as powerful, with reason.

But don't go anywhere near Samurai!

Samurai: because the game designers wanted Fighters to feel better.

02-07-08, 07:16 AM Be kinda boring, but what if I increased the penalties brought on from infamity and gave them a bonus feat in oplace of each d6 of sneak attack?

02-09-08, 10:25 AM Ronin is actually pretty nice for a few levels. Their charge ability is the same as Shock Trooper's Heedless Charge ability. The sneak attack thing is nice as well in reality, though it might seem out of place. As long as you take the skill trick that lets you change direction while charging, you can charge into a flanking position and sneak attack will activate. The damage is pretty useless, but it does open up feats that require sneak attack, like Staggering Strike. I like the way that Staggering Strike can nullify full attacks after a big charge. With a low AC you can take 1 hit with no worries.

I think the main reason Ronin doesn't get much play is because people here are generally very anti-katana.

02-09-08, 12:20 PM Aside from obviously not being a full spellcaster if you are a Ronin, I think it's actually quite a solid class. Well, if you want to take it all at once you have to suffer 11 levels of Samurai first, but other things... it seems fine.
