Does the Shadowcraft's Mage's "Cloak of Shadows" give him, basically, Hide in Plain Sight?

Page 121:

"While her claok of shadows is active, a shadowcraft mage can make a Hide check as if she had concealment?

Thanks!

By the wording I would say yes.

No, it does not.
It gives you concealment. That's it. It does not give you the ability to hide while being observed.

Oops. Wroung ability. It would be like Camuflage, but in any surrounding.

To hide, you need two things:

1) Concealment.
2) To be unobserved.

Cloak of Shadows provides the first in all but bright light, Camouflage removes the need for 1 altogether. Hide in Plain Sight provides the last.

Reread the Hide skill description; it's clear there.

Note that there are other ways to gain Hide in Plain Sight. If you're playing a shadowcraft mage, my personal favorite is a collar of umbral darkness (Tome of Magic, shadow magic section) -- it makes you a Dark creature with Hide in Plain Sight. The REAL reason you use that collar, though, is because if you're also holding a rod of embassy (or cast Planar Bubble), you now automatically maximize any Shadow spell you cast, and gain +10% reality to all of them.

Rod of Embassy? Which book (and preferably page number) is that from?

Arms & Equipment Guide, though it MIGHT have been reprinted in the Magic Item Compendium.

Planar Bubble (Planar Handbook) might be the only 3.5 way of doing what this does, though -- the former treats you as being on your home plane while the latter brings a piece of that plane to you. The collar sets your native plane to the Plane of Shadow, which... yup, maximizes and adds +10% reality to shadow spells.
