| StevenO04-08-07, 03:39 PM | MT increases both the character Arcane (Wiz here) and Divine (Cleric) spell abilities and has no spells of its own to convert. Now a cleric can convert any of that classes spells into a healing spells even if it is the MT that is improving them. It can NOT convert any spells from the arcane side over to healing however. |
| UAMDB04-08-07, 03:40 PM | He does not get Mystic Theurge Spells. He advances the spell casting abilities of both his Arcane class and his divine class. So in your example the cleric is treated as a 8th level caster in regards to who many spells he can cast, which level spells he can prepare and know, and for variable factors like 3d8+level. In this case he would be 2d8+8. So long answer is yes he can spontanious cast cures. |
| EvilVegan04-08-07, 04:21 PM | Per the SRD "The cleric can "lose" any prepared spell that is not a domain spell in order to cast any cure spell of the same spell level or lower." The only thing I could think of that would prevent it (other than errata) would be if you ruled it had to be a cure spell of the same spell level or lower from the same spell list, and wizards don't have cure spells. |
| Asilomar04-08-07, 11:25 PM | so you are saying that the MT can use swap out his wizard spells for cure spells? |
| claypigeons04-09-07, 12:50 AM | so you are saying that the MT can use swap out his wizard spells for cure spells? While a strict reading may indicate such, I wouldn't allow it. You aren't losing a prepared cleric spell (if you 'lose' a prepared wizard spell), which is what I believe the intent to be. Either way, I guess it goes to a judgement call as to how strict you wish to be regarding the rules as they pertain to the MT*. *On a side note, I consider the mystic theurge to be a subpar class in general. You have a lot of spells and spell slots, but you almost always miss out on the "best" ones. You can generalize, getting to 8/8 spells. Or you can focus, and get 9/6 (or 7? away from books atm). Though, I suppose one level of cleric and the rest wizard/MT levels, it'd work out for the better. I mean, what do you lose? Turning ability... ...because we all know how useful that is (besides for use in powering DMM). |
| boatmanj04-09-07, 12:53 AM | The cleric stuff can be dropped for cures or inflicts, the wizard couldn't. I don't see where it specifically says you can't do it, but interpreting this line from the PH pg 180 "The divine energy of the spell that the cure or inflict spell substitutes for is converted into the cure or inflict spell as if that spell had been prepared all along" would suggest that an arcane spell could not be dropped for it (considering arcane spells wouldn't have any divine energy).. The geomancer class actually lets you drop arcane stuff for cures with the spell versatility ability.. Arcane Hierophant might do the same for summon nature's ally, but don't quote me on that. EDIT: In other news, the mystic theurge class says that you gain new spells per day as if you gained a level in whatever spellcasting class he previously belonged to, it doesn't sound like it merges abilities of the classes (like it says with Geomancer). So suggesting that Mystic Theurge gains the ability drop wizard spells for heals/inflicts would be the same thing as saying any dual classed Wizard/Cleric could do so.. Which the FAQ says you cannot. |
