I'm running a campaign and I was trying to come up with some decent minions for my BBEG, Lieutenants and such things.

I already have:
1 Deathknight
1 Witch Queen....Iggwiliv
1 Nathzarune Rakshasa (MMIII)
1 Wraith King

Then the idea of the soul eater occurred to me, and I was trying to come up with a good creature, of average intelligence and decent abilities that could be made into one. My first thought was a Lycanthrope, but I'd have to rule 0 the race, which I've got no problem doing if that's my only option.

What my question is, what would make a good soul eater, in that it would benefit from all of the soul eaters abilities and such.

Any and all help would be beneficial. Thanks.
Cheers!

If you do not mind something a bit more mundane than the other minions try using a warforged.

Warforged are not humanoids and have a slam attack, i belive they can use a feat to gain another slam attack, also the warforged juggernaut class gives a lot of nice immunities which might add some resilence to your Soul Eater.

While this character is not as immediately horrifying as the other minions it have the advantage of no racial hitdice or LA.

For sheer psycho deadliness... depending on how you read the text of the soul drain ability: Thri-kreen monk. Four claws... (I'm referring to the fact some read the wording as 'with a touch attack' others 'with a blow from a natural bodily part'. I follow the latter, but not everyone does.)

And for some ways to hlep make your souleater even worse, get Libris Mortis: At least two of the feats in their improve negative level effect greatly, and the necrotic focus magic property enables souldrain negative levels to be channelled via the magic weapon.

I like the Warforged idea. The soul eater who doesn't have a soul himself. To make it better, you could add the Death Knight template from MMII/DLCS. Not strictly legal, but cool! UNDEAD ROBOT SOUL EATER! I wonder if they're an undead template that you can use on Warforged...

I was looking at a Succubus Soul Eater. It is plausible, and aesthetically pleasing as well.

A Half-Vampire could do well.

Thanks for all the replies...

I had thought about making a soul eater out of a dragon...what with the natural attacks. It seemed like the best choice.

I also thought about making one out of a Death Giant, from MMIII, as they're kinda soul-ish.

In any case...

If you do not mind something a bit more mundane than the other minions try using a warforged.

Unfortunately there are no warforged in my world. Its not that I don't like the concept, just in this particular campaign I don't want them. But thanks for the idea all the same. That combination may make it's way into another campaign.

For sheer psycho deadliness... depending on how you read the text of the soul drain ability: Thri-kreen monk.

Thri-kreen could be a choice I hadn't considered before. Hrm...the only downside to them at the moment is the psionic fluff...which again, i'm not opposed too, its just not for this partciular campaign. I've got a psionic campaign specifically planned out for my players...

I was looking at a Succubus Soul Eater. It is plausible, and aesthetically pleasing as well.

I liked this idea. I had thought about using an outsider of some kind. And didn't see anything I liked. I would use a succubus, but I've already had my players (many times) be confronted by a recurring villian, a half succubus nymph bard...which makes a decent combination oddly enough...

Kraken...

I can see why you'd say this one, lots of natural attacks, and grappling goodness, but I wanted something a bit more...intelligent...But thanks for the idea.

A Half-Vampire could do well.

I like this suggestion so far. A half vampire with a necrotic burst weapon....could be a good way to do this. Somewhere between death and life, and then sold their soul for more power. Has definite possibilities.

If anyone has anymore suggestions, I'd love to hear them, these are all great. Thanks so very much.

Cheers!

Supernatural Abilities (Su)

Supernatural abilities are magical and go away in an antimagic field but are not subject to spell resistance, counterspells, or to being dispelled by dispel magic. Using a supernatural ability is a standard action unless noted otherwise. Supernatural abilities may have a use limit or be usable at will, just like spell-like abilities. However, supernatural abilities do not provoke attacks of opportunity and never require Concentration checks. Unless otherwise noted, a supernatural ability has an effective caster level equal to the creature’s Hit Dice. The saving throw (if any) against a supernatural ability is:

10 + ½ the creature’s HD + the creature’s ability modifier (usually Charisma).

Bold emphasis mine.

As there is nothing in the Soul Eater's entry noting that the Energy Drain ability is not a Standard action, and it is a Supernatural ability, it follows that it takes a Standard action to use the Energy Drain ability.

Sorry, no dozens of Energy Drain attacks per round. Just one, normally.

Another option for the same type of feel as the Soul Eater is to go with a Sword Sage/Shadow Sun Ninja. Just go with the version that died with its capstone ability. It is a very deadly combo with the same feel of someone who eats souls.

Another twisted option would be to use a Warforged and create a feat to make them of the metal that absorbs souls (I believe it's in Complete Warrior)
