Hi this is my first post in this section of the Boards :)

I'm running a campaign where mages have created an item called a Whisper Stone. It is basically a stone that functions like a radio, and it allows near instant communication, "radio" programs, and emergency dispatches.

I made the following class to reflect special training in it's usage and to give my players some more options.

The main things I need help with are: 1) Is the class balanced? Too strong? Too weak? Why? and 2) How do you guys think I should go about statting out the creation of the Master Stone?

Thank you :D

Whisper-Stone Mage

In the realm of Laminasia, the greatest advancement of civilization has been the creation of the Whisper-Stone. This magical device can convey voices, sounds, even some magical spells. These stones are created and maintained by specially trained Mages who can attune and control these items.

When they master this fine art, they can attune their "Master Stone" to other signals and eavesdrop on other transmissions, they can also store some spells in their stone and cast them with great ease.

Requirements

Skills: Spellcraft 8 Ranks, Knowledge (Arcana) 8 Ranks, Craft (Masonry) 8 Ranks

Feats: Skill Focus [Concentration], Craft Wondrous Item, Alertness

Special: Must craft a "Master Stone"* without assistance from another Mage.

Spells Per Day
When a new Whisper-Stone Mage level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if he had also gained a level in one arcane spellcasting class he belonged to before he added the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. This essentially means that he adds the level of Whisper-Stone Mage to the level of whatever other arcane spellcasting class the character has, then determines spells per day and caster level accordingly. If a character had more than one arcane spellcasting class before he became a Whisper-Stone Mage, he must decide to which class he adds each level of Whisper-Stone Mage for the purpose of determining spells per day.

Attune Whisper Stone: At 1st level a Whisper-Stone Mage gains the ability to use his arcane energy to attune Whisper-Stones to enhance his hearing. A WSM can use his Master Stone to gain a +10 enhancement bonus to his Listen checks. He can use this ability 1 + his Intelligence modifier times per day. This ability does not function in an Anti-Magic Field.

Destroy Whisper Stone: At 2nd level the WSM can use his connection to the magical energy inside Whisper Stones to disrupt the energy and cause an explosive burst. Once per day the WSM can cause a Whisper Stone to explode when thrown against a hard surface, doing 5d6 Fire damage in a 20 foot radius. To use the stone as a ranged weapon, the WSM must make a Ranged Touch Attack. The WSM must also make a DC15 Will save or be stunned for 1 round. The Stone used for this ability is destroyed beyond repair after the explosion.

Whisper Stone Bond: At 4th level a WSM can use his attuned "Master Stone" to intuit which direction is North. He can also use his stone to find the direction to the nearest city of more than 3,000 inhabitants. This ability is usable at will. He can also sense Whisper Stones within 50' feet of his location as long as he has his Master Stone in hand.

Whisper Stone Mastery: At 5th level the WSM has mastered the usage of the magic inherent in Whisper Stones. He can now speak through Whisper Stones as long as one is within 500' + 10' per Whisper Stone within 30' of himself and his "Master Stone". The WSM can also store one spell + his Intelligence Modifier in his stone. The spell must be 2 levels lower than the highest spell he can cast and must have a Verbal component. The WSM can then cast the spell as if the Still Spell Metamagic feat had been applied to it. This ability does not raise the level of the spell.

The WSM also gains the free usage of all Whisper Stations to send messages, recieve dispatches, and purchase supplies at 50% discount.

At 1st level? Maybe a little too high? Give him a progression. For example, it gives him an enchantment bonus of + 2 + 2 for every level he has aquired in WSM. Also increase it to 1 + 1 for every three levels in WSM + Intelligence modifier.

Is the stone the center of the explosion? If so, the enemy can just "steal" the stone after the blast since you are trying to avode the explosion. Maybe you can touch it to a hard material (like a rock or a vial) then throw that item for the explosion? Everything else seems fine.

Seems fine to me ;)

The first ability isn't that good. 50 feet? You can yell into that distance with eeze. What about up to 30' per level in WSM? Everything else seems fine.

The WSM also gains the free usage of all Whisper Stations to send messages, recieve dispatches, and purchase supplies at 50% discount.

Fine with me :P

Seems like a flavorful, yet useful class. Great job!

Do you already have an idea in your head? If not, do you want the creation to be serious (meditation), scary (ritual with killing people), or funny (must eat a rock; just kidding :P )

It's only a 5 level PrC so I can stretch out the bonus that way. It's to show a short but concentrated add-on to normal arcane training. And a +10 to Listen checks isn't that much when compared to a really good Rogue's Move Silently check.

I should have added that that Stone is destroyed after the explosion so it can't be stolen. And yes the stone is the center of the explosion.

I think I'll increase it to 500' + 10' for every Whisper Stone within 30' of the caster. In the setting, the Stones amplify each others power so that the signal remains strong. I don't want it to be too long a range though, because it negates the need for Whisper stations.

Seems like a flavorful, yet useful class. Great job!

Thanks :D I didn't know if I did a good job or not.

I was thinking it could be as simple as Crafting anything else, but that the player can RP however they'd like.

Are your players the type that laugh at jokes that you tell? Or do they like detailed descriptions that give them that "I'm superior" feeling?

I have no idea. They're just normal I guess. Well as normal as you can be as a D&D player :P

Since this class isn't based off of any "one thing" make it so you must make and pass a DC 30 Craft Check? Or higher?
