They love nothing more than exploding fireballs to raising shields around themselves, thwarting anything the enemy can throw at them. Hit Dice: d4 Class Skills: Concentration, Craft (leather working), Knowledge (all skills taken individually), Profession, Search, and Spellcraft Skill Points at Each Level: 2+ Int Modifier Requirements: 3rd Level Arcane Spells, Spellcraft 5 ranks Spell bomber level BAB Fort Ref Will Special 1 +1 +0 +0 +2 Spellbomb +1 arcane caster level 2 +2 +1 +1 +3 MetaMagic Bomb +1 arcane caster level 3 +3 +1 +1 +3 Pure Spellbomb +1 arcane caster level Spellbomb - Once per day starting at the first level, the Spell Bomber can compact the arcane essence of a spell into a leather and steel ball. When thrown and the command word said, the spell activates, using the spellbomb as the center of the area. Crafting a spellbomb requires a DC Craft (leather working) check of 10 + the spell's level and as many full round actions as the spells level. The spell used takes up that days spell slot, but after that does not count against the Spell Bomber's spells per day. Only one can be carried at a time at the first level, and one more can be carried for each level after the first. Spellbombs last indefinantly. They are thrown just as splash weapons and cost 15gp x the spells level, plus any cost over 50gp of the used spell. Only spells with an area effect can be used. When thrown and activated, the spellbomb detonates within the designed area, dealing 1d6 + the spells level bludgeoning damage. The blast and spell affect a 20 foot radius originating from the spell bomb, or the spells original area of effect, whichever is higher. Metamagic Bomb - At the second level, the Explosive Spell feat (see Complete Arcane) is applied to any spell created with a spellbomb .The Spell Bomber can also add any metamagic feats he knows to the spell. Cost added to original is 20gp x increased spell level. The extra spellbomb damage increases to 2d6+the spells level. Pure Spellbomb - At the third level, the Spell Bomber no longer needs the material components to the spell bomb, creating a pure arcane focus of the spell. Metamagics can still be added, but at 10xp x the increased spell level. The spellbomb look normally reflects the spell used, such as a skull for Animate Undead or a flaming orb for Fireball. The extra spellbomb damage increases to 3d6+the spells level. |

Still, I feel this could probably be made into a three level prestige class, giving them the ability to create an additional spellbomb at every level and dropping Pure Spellbomb down to 3rd level. It's so deeply specialized that spreading these abilities out amongst five levels seems both underwhelming and underpowered. |

| Wall05-12-07, 09:09 AM | Mechanical Questions: 1: What are the HD, class skills, and skill-points per level? 2: How does one acquire the material components for the spell bomb? Do they need to craft it? If so, what is the DC and the appropriate Craft skill? 3: What kind of action is it to "compact arcane energy" into a spell bomb? Do you need to sacrifice a spell slot / prepared spell? 4: How long does a spell last while inside a spell bomb? 5: What happens to the spellbomb's sphere after the spell is used? Comments: So, why would you toss off an expensive bowling ball at a range of... what, 20 ft? when you could instead blast people all the way across the battlefield for 'free?' Okay, I do like the idea behind the class. But I also think that you need a bit more "oomph" in the spell bomb ability. Now, simple is good. You can keep it 3-5 levels and still have a great class. My suggestion is to make the area spells applied to your spellbomb more bomb-like right off the bat. For instance, you could make it so that any spell compacted into a spellbomb has the Explosive Spell feat (see Complete Arcane) applied to it for free (as in, no increased casting time, no increase in spell level). If you don't have the book, this feat allows your area spells to scatter targets around, dealing extra damage if it pushes them far enough. At higher levels, you could make it so that the spell-bomb does not simply activate the spell, but explodes in the process. This might either change half of the spell's damage into bludgeoning/slashing/piercing damage, or it might add extra physical damage to the spell attack (possibly an extra +1d6 per class level or spell level). One thing that I can hardly believe I didn't think of sooner, perhaps make it so that any spell channeled into a spell-bomb has it's area changed to a "spread," ala the fireball spell, with a radius equal to 10 x your class level, or just a base 20-foot radius spread (or the spell's radius, which ever is bigger). You can still only channel area spells into the Spell-bomb, and any save that the original spell forced still applies. Well, like I said. I like the idea, but it needs some "bang" (excuse the pun). I hope this helped. |
