Spell Progression for Dwarf Cleric/Healer! [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-11-07, 01:49 AM Does anyone know a way for a female dwarf dedicated to Berronar Truesilver who has taken levels in the Cleric class and the Healer class to gain spell progression for both classes in a single level of a prestige class of some kind?

07-12-07, 04:00 AM You may have to work with your DM about creating one. You would probably want to check out the Ultimate Magus in the Complete Mage for inspiration. It's an arcane/arcane PrC. You want a divine/divine PrC. It's probably not unbalancing, and you'll probably be an uber-healer, which allows your DM to really dish it out on you and yours, which is fun.

As far as a I know both the Cleric and the Healer both use the prepared slot method of Divine spellcasting (granted they have to pray instead of study but the effect is the same I believe).

I don't really know if Wizards of the Coast has made a Prestige class that gives spell progression to two divine spell casting classes that use spells the same way.

Even if they did or didn't and I may have to make one for my own with my DM, I'm wondering how to word the spell casting progression increases of the Prestige Class.

I'd have to word it so a person can just jump two levels of divine spellcasting in the same class. Any ideas?

07-12-07, 02:45 PM 1) Why would you take levels in both cleric and healer in the first place? Clerics are better at healing than healers by default (due to their ability to spontaneously convert prepared spells into equivalent-level cure wounds), and for example, being a cleric 7 with access to a few castings of cure critical wounds is certainly more useful than being a cleric 3/healer 4 with access to double castings of cure moderate wounds.

2) Why would you want to take levels in healer at all? Everyone knows it's the weakest full spellcaster, and a poor class in general: only the soulknife and CW samurai are worse; heck, even the fighter and sorcerer look great compared to a healer.

3) If you're going to start houseruling stuff anyway by adapting Ultimate Magus for divine spellcasters, then you may as well adopt one of the most common houserules on these boards, which is to change the healer from a preparatory spellcaster to a spontaneous spellcaster who automatically knows every spell on her class list, a la beguiler/dread necromancer/warmage.

07-12-07, 03:28 PM I'd...ask nicely if I could replace those Healer levels with levels of Cleric, unless there's some incredibly relevant RP reason that you cannot (not seeing one, over here).

On-topic, no currently published D&D 3.5 PrC does dual-divine advancement (if there was one, you'd probably see something about it on CO fairly quickly), so if you write one up, make it very specific to the character: "+1 level of cleric/+1 level of healer" for the spellcasting entry (specifying classes has been done before; just as an example, the Lyric Thaumaturge PrC specifically calls out "+1 level of bard").

07-12-07, 03:53 PM Players Handbook 2 has rules for restructuring your character if you want to change the build. For example, trade in levels of healer for levels in cleric.

And they really should have made the Healer like the Warmage. They even have that mechanic in the Miniature's Handbook. I wonder why they didn't.
