Spells Known, if applicable??? [Archive] - Wizards Community

09-09-07, 06:45 PM A friend of mine looked through the prestige classes in the Dungeon Master's book, edition 3.5, and noticed something in the wording of prestige classes with spell casting.

The Archmage and Loremaster prestige classes have in the its description on "Spells per day" saying "When a new (prestige class) level is gained, the character gains new spells per day (and spells known, if applicable) as if he had also gained a level in whatever arcane spellcasting class...."

Now the other prestige classes that have "+1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class" do not have the phrase "and spells known, if applicable."

What does this mean for Wizards, Sorcerers, Bards, and other arcane spellcasting classes?

09-09-07, 07:00 PM It means that scorcerers and bards get new spells know at that level. Basically it's reminding you that you expand your spell knowledge as well as spells per day.

This particular bit of text means the same thing no matter what PrC is in question. That is, more spells/day and more spells known/in spell book.

This is why it can be confusing and misleading to totally depend on the RAW. Designers and rules writers slip up, and sometimes the intent of the rules is more important than the letter.

09-10-07, 04:38 PM When you get +1 spell casting, you get spells known and spells in your spellbook whether it has that parenthetical clause or not.

This is expressly stated in the 3.0 FAQ, and since there have been no serious changes in this regard in the 3.5 rules, it should still be valid.
