| Grod_The_Giant10-21-06, 09:40 AM | My first reaction to the stormlord prestige class from CD was, "wow. this looks pretty cool." My second was "wtf? Why is there a prestige class for TALOS, who's not a core deity or in the book?" In fact, there are NO deites in CD who really fit this PrC. So, I decided to make it the Flamelord. The only thing you have to know is I decided that swords and daggers were the most fire-like weapons. Apoligies for the table, they never seem to come out right for me. The Flamelord Requirements: Fortitude save+4 Feats: Endurance, Great Fortitude, Weapon Focus (any sword or dagger) Spells: Able to cast third level divine spells, and have access to the Fire domain or be able to cast at least three arcane fire spells of third level or higher. Special: Must have been burned by fire (magical or non-magical) and survived. Table: The Flamelord Fort Ref Will Spells per day/ Level BAB Save Save Save Special Spells known ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1 +0 +2 +0 +2 Enhanced Daggers +1, +1 level of existing spellcasting class Resistance to Fire 5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 2 +1 +3 +0 +3 Flaming Weapon +1 level of existing spellcasting class ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 +2 +3 +1 +3 Purification by Fire +1 level of existing spellcasting class ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4 +3 +4 +1 +4 Resistance to Fire 10 +1 level of existing spellcasting class ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5 +3 +4 +1 +4 Beloved of Flames +1 level of existing spellcasting class ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6 +4 +5 +2 +5 Enhanced Daggers +2, +1 level of existing spellcasting class Favor of Flame ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7 +5 +5 +2 +5 Resistance to Fire 15 +1 level of existing spellcasting class ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 8 +6/+1 +6 +2 +6 Flaming Burst Weapon +1 level of existing spellcasting class ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9 +6/+1 +6 +3 +6 Enhanced Daggers +3, +1 level of existing spellcasting class Immunity to Fire ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10 +7/+2 +7 +3 +7 Fire's Wrath +1 level of existing spellcasting class Class Skills: Concentration (Con), Intimidate (Cha), Knowlege (nature), and Survival (Wis). Class Features All of the following are features of the Flamelord prestige class. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Flamelords gain proficiency with daggers, kukri, short swords, longswords, scimitars, falchions and greatswords, but no new proficiency with armor of shields. Spells per Day/Spells known: When a new Flamelord level is gained, the character gains new spells per day and spells known as if he had also gained a level in whatever spellcasting class he belonged to before he added the prestige class. He does not gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If a character has more than one spellcasting class, he must decide to which class he adds each level of Flamelord for the purpose of determining spells per day. Enhanced Daggers (Su) At first any dagger thrown by the Flamelord gains a +1 enhancement bonus. This improves to a +2 bonus at sixth level, and a +3 bonus at ninth level. Resistance To Fire 5 At first level, the Flamelord gains resistance 5 to fire. This improves to resistance 1- at fourth level, and resistance 15 at seventh level. Flaming Weapon (Su) At second level, any sword or dagger used by the Flamelord is treated as a flaming weapon. It looses the property 1 round after leaving the Flamelord's hands Purification by Fire (Su) At third level, as the Flamelord is burned by natural fire, adverse effects or ability drain are removed. Beloved of Flames (Su) At fifth level, when damage is rolled for natural fire, it heals the Flamelord instead (his fire resistance/immunity does NOT apply to this roll). Favor of Flame (Sp) Three times per day, the Flamelord can call upon his favor with fire to smite his foes. Treat this ability as a Flame Strike spell. The save DC is 15 + the Flamelord's primary casting stat, and caster level is equivalent to five plus his Flamelord level. or Gift of Fire At sixth level, choose one spell with the [fire] description and add it to the Flamelord's class list or list of spells known. Flaming Burst Weapon (Su) At eighth level, any sword or dagger used by the Flamelord is treated as a flaming burst weapon. It looses the property 1 round after leaving the Flamelord's hands Immunity to Fire At ninth level, the Flamelord gains fire immunity Fire's Wrath (Sp) At tenth level, once a day, the Flamelord can use Fire Storm as a SLA with a save DC of 18 + your primary casting stat and a caster level equal to your normal caster level. Requirements: +4 fort save Feats: Endurance, Great Fortitude, Weapon Focus (any sword or dagger) Spells: Able to cast 3-level divine spells, and have access to the Fire domain. Special: Must have been burned by fire (magical or non-magical) and survived. BAB: average Fort save: good Ref save: poor Will save: good Spell progression: uninturupted. 1st level: Enhanced Daggers +1 - any dagger thrown by the Flamelord counts as a +1 magical weapon. Resistance To Fire 5- the Flamelord gains resistance 5 to fire. 2nd level: Flaming Weapon- any sword or dagger used by the Flamelord is treated as a flaming weapon. It looses the property 1 round after leaving the Flamelord's hands 3rd level: Fire Walk- the Flamelord is uneffected by non-magical fire, and can move 10' faster then his normal movement range in it. 4th level: Resistance To Fire 10- the Flamelord gains resistance 10 to fire. 5th level: Thundering Weapon- any sword or dagger used used by the Flamelord is treated as a thundering weapon. It looses the property 1 round after leaving the Flamelord's hands 6th level: Gift of Fire- Choose one spell with the [fire] description of a level you can normally cast (from any spell list). You can use it as a spell-ike ability once/day. Enhanced Daggers +2 - any dagger thrown by the Flamelord counts as a +2 magical weapon. 7th level: Resistance To Fire 15- the Flamelord gains resistance 15 to fire. 8th level: Flaming Burst Weapon- any sword or dagger used by the Flamelord is treated as a flaming burst weapon. It looses the property 1 round after leaving the Flamelord's hands 9th level: Immunity to Fire- the Flamelord gains fire immunity Enhanced Daggers +3 - any dagger thrown by the Flamelord counts as a +3 magical weapon. 10th level: Firestorm- once a day, the Flamelord can use Fire Storm as if he was a 17th-level cleric. |
| Grod_The_Giant10-21-06, 03:36 PM | apparently, no-one posts on these boards... |
| obrysii10-21-06, 03:49 PM | It is against the CoC to bump your own thread within 48 hours of your last bump/post. As well: the forums have been down much of today, or have been very fickle. |
| Lotus Crane10-21-06, 04:06 PM | Also, it's "adaptation," not "adoption." |
| Grod_The_Giant10-21-06, 04:30 PM | It is against the CoC to bump your own thread within 48 hours of your last bump/post. As well: the forums have been down much of today, or have been very fickle. oops- I didn't know either of those things. The forums were working just fine for me. And Lotus Crane? When someone puts PEACH in the title, it means they want CONSTRUCTIVE criticism- not criticism for spelling mistakes. |
| Prime3210-21-06, 04:41 PM | Well, the original PrC was filled with mistakes :D Gift of Fire might be too potent... I don't understand why this class has Thundering Weapon. Can you run faster if you tie torches to your feet? |
| Lotus Crane10-21-06, 05:07 PM | When someone puts PEACH in the title, it means they want CONSTRUCTIVE criticism- not criticism for spelling mistakes. Improving your diction (not spelling, in this case) is constructive. You can't expect people to take your work seriously if you aren't even able to say what you mean. To a stranger, one is only as intelligent as he sounds. |
| Grod_The_Giant10-21-06, 06:46 PM | Well, the original PrC was filled with mistakes :D Gift of Fire might be too potent... I don't understand why this class has Thundering Weapon. Can you run faster if you tie torches to your feet? I was having trouble adopting a few abilities. Thundering =exploding. Perhaps Gift of Fire should be changed to haveing the spell added to your class list/spells known, not as a spell-like ability. |
| Grod_The_Giant10-25-06, 05:39 PM | grr...time to deploy...THE BUMP BRIGADE! :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: :bump: |
| The_Shaman10-25-06, 06:39 PM | Er, Talos is a core deity for the Forgotten Realms, which happends to be the setting for which Faiths and Pantheons is made for, and my personal setting to boot. AFAIK Greyhawk was not a core setting until 3.5. So no flaming the Stormlord, else you may get all matter of destruction on your tail. Not core deity... the indignity! Oh, and actually I'd relate fire to axes or hammers (smithing and all that)... not daggers, but it's just me. Anyway, thundering weapons doesn't seem to make sense. It might for a Talassan - thunder and lighting are quite close together anyway - but not for someone related to fire. The firewalk bonus also seems a bit strange. Why not allow the character to be healed by non-magical flame (or boost fire resistance and then allow this?) like the fire genasi feat? That might be cooler. Or, not to overdo it, have a "purification by fire" bit that removes adverse effects or ability drain as you are burned by (natural) fire. Besides, no matter what kind of a pyromaniac you are, chances are you won't be running across naturally (a key factor) burning terrain that often. Oh, and one more thing: consider if you want to keep the high will save. Someone obviously immersed in the destructive nature of an element - fire in this case - need not be the most mentally stable and resilient individual. |
| CryoSilver10-25-06, 06:45 PM | I'd swap Thundering for Flaming Burst |
| The_Shaman10-25-06, 07:03 PM | He gets it anyway, but later on. |
| Grod_The_Giant10-25-06, 07:23 PM | Firstly, I meant that Talos is a setting-specific deity. He's NOT in CD. I associated swords & daggers with fire, because I imagined they could be shaped like flames... Fire walk could be changed to purification by fire (removes adverse effects or ability drain as you are burned by natural fire). Thundering weapon could be changed to fire healing from natural fire. I just kept it because thundering=exploding=fire Flamelord Requirements: +4 fort save Feats: Endurance, Great Fortitude, Weapon Focus (any sword or dagger) Spells: Able to cast 3-level divine spells, and have access to the Fire domain. | The_Shaman10-25-06, 07:29 PM | Very few deities are mentioned in the CDiv classes. It's simply a matter of which setting is translated into the "core" - Greyhawk or Faerun. I am a fan of the Faerun-set cRPGs, hence I consider Talos a "core" D&D deity. Anyway. It might be interesting if you could check the RotW raptoran cleric levels - they get bonuses to one elemental magic but can't use or are penalized in the others. I think a definitely monoelemental cleric (Talos is most often equated with lighting, but as a lord of the Deities of Fury any other rampant natural disaster is in his portfolio) could get that. |
| Grod_The_Giant10-25-06, 07:44 PM | I know not many deities are used in the CD PrCs...but all of them are described in the book. Talos is not. |
| Grod_The_Giant10-29-06, 04:31 PM | bumpity bump bump, bumpity bump bump... :bump: |
| The_Shaman10-31-06, 05:06 PM | Yeah, well the class in CD is a 1:1 translation from F&P so maybe they skipped some work there  . |
| Grod_The_Giant10-31-06, 06:15 PM | well, whatever. I didn't come to argue about the PrCs in CD. I just want to balance my Flamelord. |
| The_Shaman11-01-06, 08:07 PM | How about some "fluffs" from the Fire Genasi in Faerun? Like some spell-like abilities such as produce flame, pyrotechnics, etc. Gift of fire is ok, but has a somewhat... too generic feel to it. At least have it give 1 spell at lvl 3 and 1 at lvl 7, for example. Right now it does not seem too imbalanced, but looks a bit bland. Instead of throwing an enchanted dagger, throwing a flame dagger or a large spark (say, by striking a hammer against something) might be more flavorful. Edit: So you're sticking with daggers and swords as signature weapons, then? |
| Grod_The_Giant11-01-06, 08:37 PM | yeah. They just seem to go to fire like javalins go to lightning, you know what I mean? I left it at enchanted daggers because I was trying to keep it as close to the stormlord as possible. If you think gift of flame is too generic, maybe change it to Produce Flame at will? I don't have any source material- only core, CD and CA. |
| The_Shaman11-02-06, 03:20 PM | I suppose... I mean I don't quite equate them with fire (swords, especially falchions, maybe), but it could work that way in your setting. Why do only thrown daggers get enchantment bonus to attack and damage, btw? If they're closer to the flamelord, they should be just as powerful imo. BTW, the Black Flame Zealot is CDivine, right? So that makes two Faerun-specific PrCs. Edit: my bad. I always equated the Black Flame Zealot with the Thayvian sect of Kossuth on Faerun. Edit 2: Oh, actually, it was - hidden deep within the pages of Unapproachable East. |
| Grod_The_Giant11-07-06, 07:07 PM | ...:bump:? |
| Kn1ves01-18-07, 09:27 AM | Personally I think whips are much moe fire oriented weapons then swords but kris bladed swords and dagges can work just as well if you didn't want to force an exotic weapon proficiency on your players. I don't think it would be too broken to just give them Exotic Weapon Proficiency: Whip at first level. |
| Grod_The_Giant01-18-07, 03:01 PM | Favored weapon is really all easily-changable flavor. |
| The_One_Who_Walks02-16-07, 04:44 PM | I think I'm on board with Gift of Fire being a little generic. even if you chose a particular fire spell, maybe somehting slightly outside the usual, that would help the feel of it. I can't think of any really interesting fire spells off the top of my head other than Fire Spiders, but that has rather less than a "gift of the divine" feel to it... other than that, though, I like the class, though I think I agree that thematically Thundering doens't make as much sense as it might, unless you're going for a "roaring flame" idea, in which case you might consider giving the ability a name to that effect, to get the idea into peoples' heads. I dunno, that's just me. oh, also, as the signature weapon for the class, I've always felt the spiked (and/or bladed) chain is indicative of fire. All that whirling and twisling and such that many people associate with weilding it jives really well with the idea of a flame. but again, that's jsut my 2 cents. daggers and short swords work just as well, particularly if they are forged to resemble a stilled flame. (small side note): I think the prerequisit entry of "deity: Talos" might have been a mistake or something. they have Black Flame Zelot in there as well, which is a PrC from the same setting, devoted to a different god called Kossuth, god of elemental fire, but they removed all references to him, other than in the Adaptation paragraph. |
| Warhaven02-16-07, 05:14 PM | I'm not seeing how throwing daggers has anything to do with the theme of the PrC. Perhaps do something more ... fiery? Maybe a sling whereby the ammunition fired from it is turned into little balls of fire, dealing the same damage as a normal sling, but fire damage. The ammunition would be treated as a magical weapon according to the progression already listed. The final ability seems to me a bit needlessly restrictive. If you take this PrC at a slightly higher level than normal, you can achieve the level 10 ability earlier via the regular Gift of Fire. Why tie them to specific spell? I might suggest just making it another Gift of Fire. |
| Grod_The_Giant02-19-07, 03:17 PM | I was trying to stay as close to the original Stormlord class as I could. I only dramatically changed those things that couldn't be converted easily. And the Firestorm ability was a quick change from the 10th level Stormlord ability. Besides, look at the description. When a fire storm spell is cast, the whole area is shot through with sheets of roaring flame. The raging flames do not harm natural vegetation, ground cover, and any plant creatures in the area that you wish to exclude from damage. Any other creature within the area takes 1d6 points of fire damage per caster level (maximum 20d6). Does that not scream 'fire mage' to you? Besides, an 8th level spell as a SLA, doing 17d6 damage over a large but easily-shapeable area is NOT to be sneezed at. For those who think Gift of Fire is a bit generic, how about this alternate version: Favor of Flame (Sp)- Three times per day, you can call upon your favor with fire to smite your foes. Treat this ability as a Flame Strike spell. The DC is 15 + your primary casting stat, and caster level is equivilant to your Flamelord level. Finally, please look at the 'current version'. I have changed thundering. In fact, just to save you the trouble, I'm going to update the top. |
| The_One_Who_Walks02-20-07, 01:24 PM | myself, personally, I like Favor of Flame much better. I just.... fits, somehow. anyway, i'd say it's a good class. would you mind if I use it in a game I'm gonna be running soon-ish? It'll suit a particular NPC I have in mind much better than Elemental Savant... |
| Grod_The_Giant02-20-07, 02:55 PM | by all means, go ahead and use it. That's why it's here. I consider it the ultimate compliment to have one of my classes used in a real game. |
| Aryxbez02-20-07, 08:18 PM | If you had Deity problems for the Stormlord What about Zeus? Think about it, fits more that anything. Zeus threw lighting bolts/spears Stormlord throws javelins with lightning just like Zeus wouldn't you say? Also I would add axes to the list, at least hand axes, because Axes be Awesome also when I think of fire the weapons it reminds me of are Arabian weapons you put there and axes |
| Grod_The_Giant02-20-07, 08:40 PM | If you had Deity problems for the Stormlord What about Zeus? Think about it, fits more that anything. Also I would add axes to the list, at least hand axes, because Axes be Awesome also when I think of fire the weapons it reminds me of are Arabian weapons you put there and axes <sigh>. please read what I have to say. I was annoyed by the class because there was no deity in either the PHB or CDiv that fit the class. Zeus is not mentioned in either, although he does indeed fit the concept. Secondly, as I have said far to many times, THE WEAPON CHOICE IS ALL FLAVOR!! IT CAN EASILY BE CHANGED!!! appoligies for caps, but it does **** me off when people don't read my explanations |
| Aryxbez02-20-07, 08:46 PM | I did read, it seemed you still had a deity problem so I just posted what I thought would help. No point in helping a person who is just going to yell at me for really no reason. For you did say yourself the change to flamelord was due to the deity so i thought I would help. Calm thy self sir. Otherwise the class seems fine. |
| Grod_The_Giant02-20-07, 09:09 PM | I'm sorry for yelling, but this thread has been bogged down in the past with pointless debate about weapons (hammers? axes? swords?). As I said, I fully agree about Zeus being good for the stormlord, but alas, there is no mention of his domains anywhere I know, and he's a highly specific god. |
| Aryxbez02-20-07, 10:55 PM | Okay I understand, it happened to some of my threads as well. I don't know his domains off hand, but I am sure they are not hard to figure out. Also he is in the Deities and Demigods book it is a 3.0 book, but still a pretty good book for deities of not only Olympian, but also Norse deities as well. Hope that helps |
| The_One_Who_Walks02-21-07, 06:10 PM | Actually, the choice of weapon does matter, though only slightly. the weapon itself doens't matter so much, as weither it is simple, martial, or exotic. A simple weapon (dagger, short sword, ect.) or a martial weapon (longsword, warhammer) isn't even that big a difference, because almost all class give accese to proficeny with one (and many with both) as class features. Flamelord requires you to have weapon focus in the weapon of choice, and obviously, to Focus on a weapon, you must be proficent wiht it to begin with. If you choose an exotic weapon (whip, spiked chain), you force the player to spend an extra feat to gain proficeny with the weapon, in addition to the one they must spend to Focus on it, thus making the prerequisist for the class that little bit harsher. sadly, this point of mine counts agaist my previous recomendation of spiked chain, and so I think I'll change my mind, and advise keeping dagger and/or shortsword, or atleast some other simple or matial weapon. it siplifies matters, and spares the player a feat. on the other hand, if you have a mind to add some little bit of power to the class, that little hidden prerequisit might do the trick to mantain balance. I dunno. again, this is all just me. now, my :twocents: contributed once again, I'll shut up. |
| Grod_The_Giant02-24-07, 02:15 PM | After looking at the Stormlord's class skills, I realized that they don't fit very well. So, I put down what I saw on the list that did work. And suggestions in this area would be much appriciated. |
