| forsaken111109-05-07, 11:21 AM | I stole some of this from the Grim Psion 3.0 class, others I made up or took from another source. This PRC is not intended to grant great undead armies or amazing power over the undead. It is intended to reflect a single psion's obession with undeath and her exploration of manipulating negative energy to alter her body and soul. It is a 14 level transformation PRC which gives a gradual buildup in power and steady progression towards the end goal, which is to become a psionic lich. Its not my first attempt at a new class, but its certainly the most ambitious I've tried. Please keep this thread civil and constructive. If you think it sucks, don't tell me that... tell me WHY you think it sucks. I'm enclosing the whole thing in a sblock to make it easier to format, so here you are. Apologies if I missed any spelling errors. Stygian Master "I am eternal." For some psions, it's all about the preservation of life: their life. For these individuals, the thought of their existence ending is completely unbearable, and they go to any lengths to avoid the bleakness of death. It is ironic then to learn of how these psions solve this dilemma. They follow the dark arts and turn to the realm of the undead to escape the end. Using their Psicrystal as a lens, the stygian master establishes a permanent conduit to the negative energy plane, drawing sustenance and power through it. Though they pay a heavy cost for this new existence, for them, it is worth it, for they can exist forever. Although her flesh remains warm and pliant, there is no mistaking the nature of a fully transformed stygian master. Her eyes fade in to perfect silvered orbs, and her face takes on a gaunt appearance. Animals shy away from her, and her very presence brings a chill which can wither the hardiest crops. Game Rule Information: Stygian Masters have the following game statistics. Hit Die - D6 Requirements: To qualify to become a stygian master, a character must fulfill all the following criteria. Alignment: Any non-good. Skills: Knowledge (psionics) 9 ranks, Knowledge (religion) 9 ranks, Knowledge (the planes) 4 ranks. Class Features All of the following are class features of the stygian master. Forge the Conduit (Ex): At 1st level the stygian master focuses psionic energy through his Psicrystal to forge a permanent conduit of negative energy at its heart. This is the source of the master’s power, and the well from which all other class abilities spring. Forging the conduit permanently reduces the stygian master’s power point total by 5 points. Thereafter she is treated as having 5 fewer points than a manifester of her level would have. Forging the conduit takes 24 hours of uninterrupted concentration over the Psicrystal, during which the stygian master pours all of his power points into it. At the end of this period, a tiny black flaw appears at the heart of the gem. This action irrevocably renders the psicrystal’s personality insane, and thereafter it will do nothing but gibber madly if allowed to speak. If ordered to perform a specific action, there is only a 50% chance that it does so. Otherwise it stands still or refuses to leave the stygian master’s possession. Should the stygian master’s psicrystal ever be destroyed, the 5 power points that were lost are immediately returned to her and are available to be used. While the stygian master has no psicrystal she loses access to all supernatural abilities of this class. She is also unable to heal damage naturally through rest, and requires the application of negative energy to mend any wounds. The stygian master may distill a new psicrystal with 24 hours of concentrated effort. The new psicrystal will already have the planar conduit in place, and at the time it is created she again reduces her power point pool’s maximum size by 5. Stygian Metabolism (Ex): This ability marks the first step down the road of undeath, and a fundamental shift in the psion’s metabolism. The stygian master gains Tomb-Tainted Soul as a bonus feat, allowing her to heal from applications of negative energy. Thereafter, positive energy harms her as if she were an undead. Her stygian metabolism continues to evolve as she gains levels in this class: At 2nd level the stygian master gains the Tomb-Born Fortitude feat as a bonus feat. At 4th level the stygian master gains the Tomb-Born Vitality feat as a bonus feat. At 6th level the stygian master gains the Tomb-Born Resilience feat as a bonus feat. Ability Boost (Ex): As the body withers the mind sharpens. At each indicated level the stygian master may choose to gain a +2 profane bonus to Cha, Wis, or Int. She cannot choose the same stat twice, as the profane bonuses would not stack. Each time a bonus is taken, the stygian master takes a cumulative -2 penalty to her con score. Tenebrous Body (Su): As her connection with undeath deepens, her body becomes more resilient to physical threats. The stygian master gains DR/piercing and magic equal to half her class level. Hit dice Promotion (Ex): No longer troubled with maintaining the delicate balance that is a living metabolism, her body is reinforced with negative energy and made more resilient; she has all her current and previous hit dice increased to d8. At the DM’s option, this can be resolved by adding the difference between the hit dice or by rerolling each affected hit dice individually. If rerolled, the new result should not be lower than the previous total. At 6th level, her hit dice increase again to d10. Stygian Touch (Su): Negative energy courses through the stygian master’s body. She may will it to gather in her hands to deliver a touch attack. She gains a touch attack that deals 1d8 points of negative energy damage; a Will save with a DC 10 + class level + charisma modifier reduces the damage by half. If the target fails this save, it is also paralyzed for 1d3 rounds. This touch heals undead for 1 point plus 1 point per 2 class levels. This ability may not be used to heal herself. Stygian Blast (Su): The Stygian master may, as a standard action, focus her touch attack into a ranged blast by sending a surge of psionic energy along her arm. This takes the form of a seething ray of darkness which springs forth from her hands to strike her target. This blast is resolved as a 60ft ranged touch attack which does 1d8 negative energy damage +1 per 2 class levels and costs 1 power point to initiate. Each additional power point channeled into the blast increases the damage by 1d8. This attack heals undead for 1 point per damage die, plus an additional 1 per two class levels. The stygian master may not spend more power points on this ability than she has manifester levels. She may not add more damage dice than her class level as a stygian master. For example: A 14th level stygian master with a manifester level of at least 15 may spend 1 point to initiate this ability, and augment it with 14 extra power points for a 15d6+7 blast of negative energy. Aphotic Metabolism (Su): Light is anathema to the stygian metabolism. From this point on the stygian master is unable to heal naturally if she is in the presence of any light greater than torchlight. If under direct sunlight or the effect of a daylight or similarly powerful light spell, the stygian master loses hitpoints at a rate of 2 per round until she takes a full round action to wrap herself in clothing, taking care to leave no part of her body exposed; this requires a concealing article of clothing, such as a cloak or blanket. This damage is visible to anyone nearby as a blistering of the skin, as if a bad sunburn. If the stygian master is killed in this way, her body melts away into a puddle of black ichor. Conversely, darkness nourishes and sustains the stygian metabolism. If the stygian master is in shadowy illumination or total darkness, or under the effect of any sort of magical darkness effect, she gains fast healing 2 until the lighting conditions change to something brighter. Algid Soul (Su): The stygian master’s body has been altered to such an extent that cold no longer damages or interrupts the body’s processes. She gains the cold subtype, and is unaffected by extremes of temperature. Undeath (Ex): The stygian master takes her final step on the journey to undeath, transforming her body into an unliving creature. She gains the undead type and all immunities and effects which go with it. Consume Psicrystal (Ex): As she completes the transformation, the stygian master crushes and consumes her psicrystal. The pieces gather within her flesh, forming a psicyst. The stygian master gains a psionic version of the Mother Cyst feat from Libris Mortis, gaining psionic versions of the spells that feat normally grants. These powers are immediately added to her powers known and cannot be altered or removed by psychic reformation or similar abilities. They are a function of the psicyst. The stygian master retains all bonuses granted by her psicrystal. Psianimate Dead (Ps): After intensive study and experimentation, the stygian master has learned to draw extra negative energy through her psicyst's conduit and use it to animate the dead. Once per day she may manifest the Psianimate Dead power for free as a psi-like ability. In addition, the stygian master gains the ability to surpass the normal limit of undead under her control. For every hit dice of undead beyond the normal control limit, she must 'reserve' two power points from her power pool. Power points which are reserved may not be used for manifesting or any other function. They exist to sustain and control the additional undead. If these undead are slain, the reserved power points are immediately lost until the stygian master rests or replinishes them in some other fashion, such as by the Stygian Bereavement ability. Algid Emanation (Su): The stygian master, through long association with undeath, now emanates a 10ft life-draining field at all times. It is not powerful enough to affect healthy individuals, but dying creatures (those between -1 and -9hp) in the area must make a fortitude save each round equal to 10 + class level + charisma modifier or be affected as if by the Death Knell spell. This emanation also immediately slays normal nonmagical vermin and plants of 1 hit dice or less in the area, causing crops to wither and insects or rodents to die. Stygian Bereavement (Su): The stygian master’s touch attack becomes even more dangerous to living creatures. She may now, at her choice, add 2 points of temporary constitution damage to the touch, in addition to the other effects. This damage is halved on a successful save, and doubles on a critical hit. Any con damage caused in this way is drained off as extra power points added to her pool of available power points. This cannot cause her to go above her maximum power point total, and any extra points drained are lost. Turn Resistance (Su): The stygian master reinforces the negative energy conduit in her psicyst, gaining +4 turn resistance. Mental Bastion (Su): Those seeking to influence a stygian master’s mind may find nothing but an empty shell. The stygian master has learned to momentarily shift her psychic aura into to her psicyst to avoid damaging effects. This gives her power resistance equal to 10 plus her hit dice, and infers a +2 profane bonus on will saves to resist mind-affecting abilities. Psilich Transformation (Ex): The stygian master has reached the pinnacle of her power. At this point, once she creates a psionic phylactery, she transforms into a psilich gaining all powers and abilities the template grants. An integral part of becoming a psilich is creating a psionic phylactery in which the creature affixes its life force to the mortal coil. Unless the phylactery is located and destroyed, a psilich reappears 1d10 days after its apparent death in an area adjacent to its phylactery. Each psilich must make its own phylactery, which requires the Craft Cognizance Crystal feat. The character must be a psion of at least 11th level (or be able to manifest at least one 6th-level power and have at least 11 HD). The phylactery costs 120,000 gp and 4,800 XP to create and has a manifester level equal to that of its creator. Psionic phylacteries often take the form of costly gemstones set into rings, amulets, or other adornments. A close look at such items reveals an inner glow, and phylacteries always detect as psionic powers in operation. The gemstone is Fine and has a hardness rating of 20, 40 hit points, and a break DC of 40. Here is the Psianimate Dead power. Psianimate Dead Metacreativity [Evil] Level: Psion/Wilder 5 Display: Audible Manifesting Time: One standard action Range: Touch Targets: One or more corporeal corpses touched Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: None Power Resistance: No Power Points: 9 This power turns the bones or bodies of a dead creature into an undead version of its former self, one with powers that outpace undead creatures that are merely animated with arcane or divine energy (see below). The psianimated undead creature follows your mental commands to the best of its ability (you can mentally command the undead you psianimated if within 50 feet of them, even if you do not have line of sight, though the undead cannot communicate with you). The undead remain psianimated until they are destroyed. (A destroyed psianimated undead creature can be psianimated again, if time permits and if its destruction has left sufficient body parts to work with.) Unlike standard undead, psianimated undead remain animate only so long as you have a power point reserve of at least 1 point. When you go below 1, no matter how far away you are or how many planes removed from your creation, the psianimated undead that you’ve created and controlled become inert. When your power point reserve climbs to 1 or higher, your psianimated undead return to normal, assuming they haven’t been destroyed in the meantime. Regardless of the type of undead, you cannot use a single manifestation of psianimate dead to animate more HD of undead than twice your manifester level with a single use of this power. The undead creature you psianimate retains all its extraordinary abilities, but not its supernatural or spell-like abilities. The undead creature loses all class abilities, if any. The psianimated creature retains all its ability scores, except for its Constitution (which undead do not possess). The psianimated creature gains the undead type. The undead creature you psianimate remains under your control indefinitely. However, no matter how many times you use this power (or similar powers or spells), you can control only 4 HD worth of undead creatures per manifester level. If you exceed this number, all the newly psianimated undead creatures fall under your control, but any excess undead from previous manifestations become inert (you choose which creatures become inert). Psianimated undead rendered inert in this fashion must be animated again with this power, if you desire their service once more. Creating a Psionic Lich “Psionic lich” is a template you can add to any aberration, dragon, giant, humanoid, magical beast, monstrous humanoid, or outsider (referred to hereafter as the “base creature”), provided it can create the required phylactery. Following the transformation, the creature’s type changes to “undead.” It uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here. Hit Dice: Increase to d12 Speed: Same as the base creature’s AC: The psionic lich has +2 natural armor or the base creature’s natural armor, whichever is better. Damage: Creatures without natural weapons gain a touch attack that uses negative energy to deal 1d8+5 points of damage to living creatures. Creatures with natural attacks can use their natural weaponry or the touch attack, as they prefer. Special Attacks: A psionic lich retains all the base creature’s special attacks and also gains those listed below. Saves have a DC of 10 + half the lich’s HD + the lich’s Charisma modifier unless noted otherwise. Life-Draining Touch (Su): Any living creature the lich touches as a melee touch attack sustains 2 points of temporary Constitution damage (4 on a critical hit)—the lich gains drained points as extra psionic power points on a 1–per–1 basis. Arcane Spell Bane (Su): The bane of arcane magic, the mere presence of a psionic lich interferes with arcane spellcasting. Any arcane spell cast within 30 feet of a psionic lich requires a successful Concentration check, or the spell is lost. The Concentration check is against a DC of 10 + half the lich’s HD + the lich’s Charisma modifier. Even if the standard option of psionics and magic affecting each other is being used, this effect interferes only with arcane spells (not psionics, other spell-like abilities, divine spells, etc.). Powers: The psionic lich can manifest any power it could manifest while alive. Special Qualities: A psionic lich retains all the base creature’s special qualities and those listed below, plus it also gains the undead type. Power Point Boost (Ex): When first transforming itself into a psionic lich, the character receives a one-time addition of power points to its power point total equal to its current total manifester level. Thus, a 12th-level psion who becomes a psionic lich has an additional 12 power points more than it otherwise would have had. Turn Resistance (Ex): A psionic lich has +4 turn resistance. Power Resistance (Su): A psionic lich has power resistance equal to its manifester level +10. Fast Healing (Su): A psionic lich’s undead body is constantly revitalized by the psionic energy coursing through it, granting it Fast Healing 3. Immunities (Ex): Psionic liches are immune to cold, electricity, and polymorph attacks. Damage Reduction (Su): A psionic lich’s undead body is tough, giving it damage reduction 15/piercing and magic (or DR 15/+1). Its natural weapons are treated as magic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. Saves: Same as the base creature’s Abilities: A psionic lich gains +2 to Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma, but being undead, it has no Constitution score. Skills: A psionic lich receives a +8 racial bonus to Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Search, Sense Motive, and Spot checks. Otherwise its skills are the same as the base creature’s. Feats: Same as the base creature’s Environment: Any Organization: Solitary Challenge Rating: Same as the base creature’s + 2 Treasure: Standard coins; double goods; double items Alignment: Any evil Advancement: By character class |

I'm not posting the psilich template right now since its taken from another source and I don't have permission. Its about the same power level of a lich however. Many abilities of this class are simply duplicated by the psilich.Ok, maybe a link? or book's title? |
| forsaken111109-05-07, 03:02 PM | So, what's his name? Fixed. Copy/paste error. I used the grim psion's layout when making it in my text file and forgot to change the name in a few places. Wasn't most manifesters & casters d4? Why this one should go above them? I didn't feel it mattered much, since the HD will be advancing as the class progresses. Originally I had it start at D4 then upgrade through D6, D8, etc. Dropped the D4 to leave off the early promotion. If you think it would make more sense to do it that way I can see about stretching it out. It's fulfill (double l at the end). Just in case you'd like to correct. Fixed I'd go with manifester level 3 or 5, but bump the rank requirements from 8 to 9. That way, less strict manifesters would have easier way to enter in case they'd want to. Good advice, my way was too strict. Again - name? Why Diplomacy, by the way? And Sense Motive? Those two are useless with undead, and I can't imagine how that guy should be a better diplomat than, for example, Sorcerer. Removed diplomacy and sense motive. You're right about the diplomacy thing. Plz put the bonus feats explicitly in the table. Okay, if it will help. Ability boosts makes little sense to me, plus they seems to be to powerful for this class, with the things it gets. I put them in there as holdover from the grim psion. They won't stack with the +2 to int, wis, cha that the psilich gets. At least its not intended too. If you really think its too powerful, I can remove em and let them have the ability boosts at the end. The intention was to smooth out the power build rather than BAM lots of power at level 14. Ok, that makes some sense. I wouldn't punish him so... Maybe he should be allowed to spent those invested points to add negative energy damage to any power with a target? Let's say +1 for 1pp, +d4 for 2pp, d6 for 3pp, d8 for 4pp and d10 for 5pp? This wouldn't also count against max pp he can spent on one power. That could work, although its only 5 power points. I had thought of those 5 points as 'holding the conduit open' so to speak. 3 bonus feats - should be noted explicitly in a table, for easier reading. Okay, I will put them in. I was trying not to clutter the table too much. Note these will become useless at 9th level, they're just for flavor along the way to represent the gradual transformation. I'd remove this. Seems to powerful. Like I said, the point was to smooth out the power gain since the psilich gains these boost anyway. Not that you knew that... I think I'll go ahead and post the psilich anyway, and take it down if anyone asks me to. That way you know what I'm working towards. Needed, but powerful nonetheless. The point of tenebrous body is to smooth out the gain of DR. The psilich has DR 15/piercing and magic so I figured gaining 1/level was better than suddenly having 15. Do you think its too much? I could make it half level, then jump to 15 when she gains the template. He is master of undead and negative energy, not master of mind and influence. Remove? Well it's supposed to represent how innately frightening she is to living creatures. What would you suggest changing it to, or just remove entirely? Maybe a gaze attack which only works on living creatures of lesser hitdice, involving an intimidate check? Nice. Tasty, but not overpowered. WAIT! Did he just got infinite self healing? Yes, he did as he heals just as undead do. Plz add a limit that, since the energy comes from his body, he cannot use it to heal himself. Good point, added a limitation that it may not be used to heal herself. He shouldn't heal faster in darkness than burn in light. I changed them both. Now its 2 damage/round in sunlight, fast healing 2 in darkness. Just no. If something bypasses all immunities, it bypasses all immunities. Don't play with that, if you don't get 2 players blocked in an argue if they characters fight. As a DM, I wouldn't allow this in my game under no circumstances. Good point, will alter that a bit. I could see the problem arising and no need to cause trouble. It looks like a cold subtype... Wouldn't he have that power by now anyway?! So what's the point? Yes but a free manifestation saves him some pp once a day. Makes up for losing the 5pp at the start? Maybe I could also double his control limit or something? Suggestions? Edit: Forgot to say; Thanks for the very helpful feedback! :) |
| forsaken111109-05-07, 07:22 PM | Updated based on feedback: Ability boost now has a penalty of -2 to con each time a boost to a mental ability score is chosen. This is to represent the withering of the body as the mind sharpens. The ability to manifest psianimate dead 1/day as a psi-like ability was kept, but an additional ability was added on to the end of its discription. She may 'reserve' power points to exceed the normal control limit of undead. Removed frightful gaze and added a ranged touch attack 'blast' similar to a warlock's eldritch blast but this costs power points to use. Edit: Added some additional rules for the blast specifying a range and a damage cap. Next on the agenda is to work out an epic progression, and perhaps some feats. |
