Taking care of ASF [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm starting a new PBP game and although it seems unlikely we'll get very far soon, I wanted to have an idea of my character. I will be making a barbarian/sorcerer and so far, it seems he will be approved. However I am worrying about the arcane spell failure of armor, which I intend to use. My DM has rejected the battle sorcerer from UA, and as a barbarian the character won't be able to qualify for Spellsword (if it is accepted in the game at all) without an extra feat which I am not really keen on (AP: heavy). The character is human, and I will be gearing him towards Dragon Disciple, even though the DM refused to edit the PrC so that it gives spellcasting levels instead of extra spells.

So how can I get around ASF? I don't know of any other sorcerer variants that can help; I could make a barb/bard instead, but I'm not very keen on that.Warmage is not too likely either, as the campaign has arcane casters being rare and persecuted (which, according to the DM, is why my character can't get training to be a "battle" sorcerer), and I wouldn't want to be a beguiler in the first place.

To ignore ASF, you could...

1) Dip in Fighter lvls using the Complete Mage class substitution option.

2) Wear a Mithral Shirt (10% ASF) and use the Twilight enhancement reprinted in the PH II Duskblade class (-10% ASF).

3) Build a crazy spell list full of spells that have no Somatic components. For no Somatics means no ASF. (And while I've done this once before, it does hurt the head and end up with a very unusual spell list.)

There are other options, but those are the easiest.

I was currious to see what a list like that would look like, so I went through the SRD quick.
(I may have missed some of the ones that don't list "Components:", and are "like [xxx other similar spell]")

Wizard/Sorcerer Spells without Somatic Components:
Level 0: Flare, Light
Level 1: Feather Fall, True Strike, Ventriloquism
Level 2: Blindness/Deafness, Blur, Darkness, Knock
Level 3: Displacement, Suggestion, Tongues
Level 4: Dimension Door, Geas, Lesser, Shout
Level 5: Contact Other Plane, Teleport
Level 6: Geas/Quest, Suggestion, Mass
Level 7: Phase Door, Power Word Blind, Teleport Object, Teleport, Greater
Level 8: Charm Monster, Mass, Irresistible Dance, Power Word Stun
Level 9: Mage’s Disjunction, Power Word Kill, Prismatic Sphere, Teleportation Circle, Time Stop, Wail of the Banshee, Wish

"Out of Combat" Utility spells that might also be nice to know:
Level 0: Arcane Mark, Detect Poison, Detect Magic, Mending, Message, Open/Close, Prestidigitation, Read Magic
Level 1: Alarm, Animate Rope, Disguise Self, Endure Elements, Erase, Hold Portal, Identify, Mage Armor, Mount, Nystul's Magic Aura, Unseen Servant
Level 2: Alter Self, Arcane Lock, Continual Flame, Darkvision, Detect Thoughts, Locate Object, Obscure Object, Protection From Arrows, Rope Trick, Whispering Wind
Level 3: Arcane Sight, Clairaudience/Calairvoyance, Explosive Runes, Gentle Repose, Illusory Script, Leomund's Tiny Hut, Nondetection, Phantom Steed, Secret Page, Sepia Snake Sigil, Shrink Item, Tongues, Water Breathing
Level 4: Arcane Eye, Detect Scrying, Fire Trap, Hallucinatory Terrain, Illusory Wall, Leomund's Secure Shelter, Locate Creature, Minor Creation, Polymorph, Remove Curse, Scrying, Stone Shape
Level 5: Contact Other Plane, Dismissal, Dream, Fabricate, False Vision, Leomund's Secret Chest, Major Creation, Mirage Arcana, Mordenkainen's Faithful Hound, Mordenkainen's Private Sanctum, Passwall, Permanency, Prying Eyes, Rary's Telepathic Bond, Sending, Symbol of Sleep, Seeming, Symbol of Pain
Level 6: Analyze Dweomer, Contingency, Guards and Wards, Legend Lore, Move Earth, Permanent Image, Stone to Flesh, Symbol of Fear, Symbol of Persuasion, Veil
Level 7: Arcane Sight, Control Weather, Limited Wish, Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion, Plane Shift, Greater, Scrying, Greater, Simulacrum, Symbol of Stunning, Symbol of Weakness, Vision
Level 8: Antipathy, Clone, Demand, Dimentional Lock, Discern Location, Mind Blank, Polymorph Any Object, Prying Eyes, Greater, Screen, Symbol of Death, Symbol of Insanity, Sympathy, Temporal Stasis
Level 9: Etherealness, Refuge, Shapechange

Many of these might not be a good choice, for a sorcerer, and there are probably some personal favorites of others, that I have left out, but it's still quite a list.

One way would be simply not to. Just rely on wands/scrolls for your main spellcasting needs and select sorc spells without somatic components, like true strike.:)

Or you could opt not to wear armour, and rely on castings of mage armour and/or shield instead.

Alternatively, take the southern magician feat(races of faerun). It lets you cast a few spells each day as either arcane or divine(1/2 caster lvs, take practiced spellcaster). The trick is that if you cast your sorc spells as divine spells, they will not suffer from ASF. But it is a very costly method(2 feats), and might not be worth it for such a minor investment.:(

There are a couple of things you can do. Suel Arcanamach is a spellcasting gishy type PrC (Complete Arcane). First level ability is Ignore Arcane Spell Failure 5%. Only 5th level spells at 10th level, though, but it gets cleric bab, I think...

I dunno if they changed it in Errata, but:
Still Spell.
Practical Metamagic (Still Spell)
Still spell costs you +1 level, Practical Metamagic reduces it by one. All your spells are stilled! Races of the Dragon. Errata might say "to a minimum of +1 level.", in that case this doesn't work.

I'm out of ideas...

minimum of +1, so that doesn't work. Just take that +1 mithril Twilight chain shirt.

Nah, metal armors are not likely - the setting is practically ruled by druids and they mean business. I was thinking about a +1 twilight leather, I guess.

A level of Spellsword would reduce ASF by 10%. +1 Twilight Dragonhide Chain Shirt ought to do the trick.
