The best prestige class [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-06-07, 10:22 PM making a character for a friend (what it is depnds on the prestige class he wants) he knows he wants to look into a prestige class and he asked me which was the best, so now im here plz state which prestige class is your favorite and why (if its made up include ALL info)

06-06-07, 10:27 PM It depends on the character type you want. There are literally hundreds of prestige classes, and they're almost all completely different. There is simply no answer to such a broad question. You're going to have to give us a lot more information than that.

For example, does he want to play an arcane caster? Blaster? Summoner? Divine Caster? Healer? Melee character? Swft type? Hulking type? Archer? Thrower? Skill user? There are just so many different categories of prestige classes and too many different types of characters in general, so ask him what type of character he wants to play first, and then come back so we can give you a better response.

06-06-07, 10:39 PM I like all the mobility kind of builds, like Scout, Rogue, and several others. But, if you want something a little different, I've made a few things...

Ranger- Favored Enemy PrC- Hunter (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=860926)
Monk- Replaced some things with elemental stuff- Elemental Striker (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=833628)

That's all I can really give you, you should ask the player to try and narrow down to a specific type of character....

06-06-07, 10:49 PM wow uhh that did it for him but another frind is at his house and hes asking the same thing (he at least said he like archery) so i was thinking an arcane archer

06-06-07, 11:04 PM NP, I'd go with Sorcerer as base class and learn all the Summon Monster spells. Or Wizard, but I don't really like Wizards.....too much cost to cast

06-06-07, 11:30 PM I'd like to point out that to be a Thaumaturgist, one would need to be able to cast lesser planar ally, which is a spell on the cleric spell list. Clerics are the most common path to this PrC, but I'd like to suggest the Favored Soul base class from Complete Divine. It is basically the sorcerer version of a cleric. But much funner. :D

Favored Soul
Hit Die: d8
BAB: decent (as cleric)
Saves: all good (as monk)
Spells per day: as sorcerers
Spells known: limited as sorcerers (take ur pick from cleric list)
Class features galore: free Weapon Focus, energy resistances, winged flight, etc.

06-06-07, 11:36 PM Druid is a pretty powerful summoner if built properly. They focus more on summoning animals and fey and naturey things instead of demons and whatnot, but the have the advantage of being able to summon them at will instead of having to prepare the spells. (Not an issue if you're going Sorcerer)

Druids also get a lot of buffs that only affect animals that can be quite powerful on summons or on their Animal Companion.

Make sure to take the Augment Summoning feat.

Okay, so this is my suggestion for your friend's build:
Favored Soul 10+/ Thaumaturgist 5
Get Spell Focus (conjuration) as soon as possible, and the Spell Penetration feats wouldn't hurt either (summoner type characters need that extra edge to deal with waywards/hostile outsiders). And for the garnishing touch: portable, shrinking permanent magic circles made of adamantine, cold iron, and silver; all hooked unto a staff with a ring on top of it.

I also recommend learning (researching) the planar binding spells. If you're a good summoner who calls celestial allies, then you can use the binding spells to summon forth fiends to do your rather dirty bidding. Both if you're evil. Either or if neutral.

I honestly do not think druids have that summoner "feel". I mean, they usually always call forth nature's allies to fight for them. When I picture the "summoner", I see this great magician or priest using occult means to summon luciferous beings from the heavens and/or hellish denizens from the netherworld. It's that much cooler. But that's just me.

06-07-07, 02:53 PM Is it absolutely necessary for him to have a Prestige Class? Why doesn't he try a few base classes, then find a logical progression. He'll likely find his niche if he learns what he likes, then looks for a PrC to help that out.

First of all, what type of character is he playing? Warrior, arcanist, divine spellcaster, skill monkey, etc.?

Because you know, Planar Shepherd isn't going to be helpful to a warblade, and Master of Nine isn't going to be helpful to a druid.

06-07-07, 09:16 PM For absolute raw power go to planar shepard from faiths of ebberron if you chose dal quor as your chosen plane you get to make a 20ft radius bubble were time is accelerated 10 to 1:D :D :D .
