The Bricoleur

"Well, we threw him in a cell, and he somehow got through the bars. We threw him in a Antimagic room and he managed to lockpick it. We finally ended up hiring him. " – Garr Sevenon, Captain of the Guard

"He spat in a piece of leather, poured some wine in there, and threw some herbs into the mix. He threw the twisted concoction at the goblins and… It set them all on fire. I'm still trying to figure out how he stopped my bleeding with a piece of glue-stuff. " – Kiner “Sneak” Stallon, Adventuring Pickpocket.

Hit Dice: d6

Overview

The Bricoleur relies only upon himself, taking whatever is at hand, finding a use for it to find the best way to use it, and usually succeeds in his dubious-looking attempts, creating a matter of things that can literally change the world, as most adventurers do with the blade or with magic, he does with pure skill and resourcefulness. Most Bricoleurs are either Neutral or Good, edging on the fact that most Bricoleurs simply tend to be more good-aligned. Evil Bricoleurs do occur, however, and that is a true thing to fear, and the result is usually villains that can destroy populaces with their skills at crafting.

All of the following are Class Features of the Bricoleur prestige class.

"I don't use guns. They're stupid and violent. I'd rather make a thunderstones, or slap some 'Tape on that wound."-Unknown Master Bricoleur

Weapon and Armor Proficiency:
Bricoleurs are proficient with all simple weapons, and all martial weapons, excluding guns, should they exist in the campaign this class is used. Bricoleurs are proficient with light armor, but not with shields.

Random Usefulness (Ex):
Beginning at 1st level, the Bricoleur can use the ability called "Random Usefulness", which allows him to make an Craft check with his highest Craft modifier and have it affect any of the craft abilities. He can use this Craft check to create nearly any makeshift object, as well as those listed under the Craft check. Using unbelievable methods of quick and dirty substitution of necessary items with that of easy to find ones, the Bricoleur can create nearly any item. As an addition to this, by making a check with a +5 or higher roll than the DC, the Bricoleur can create the item needed in a much shorter time period, one time unit less than normal. If it was to be days, it would be reduced to that long in hours, if it were hours, it would be reduced to that long in minutes, and if it was minutes, it would be reduced to that many rounds. These items are unstable because of their rickshaw nature, and eventually fall apart after they're made, lasting for 1/hour per Bricoleur level.

Never give Up (Ex):
Due to his nature as an Bricoleur to circumstances, an Bricoleur of 2nd level or higher gains the feat Iron Will.

Knife of Many Things (Ex):
As an Bricoleur, the Bricoleur gains a weapon that not only functions as a weapon, but has an entire slew of puposes, ranging from opening doors to making fire, some more useful than others, but all useful for the sake of survival, which at an Bricoleur exceeds all expectations. This "weapon" also assists the Bricoleur's craft checks, lending a +2 bonus to all craft checks that the Bricoleur makes while utilizing this "weapon". Upon acquiring this ability, the Bricoleur may select one of the below abilities he qualifies for. Every other level after this, he gains another ability he may use with this "weapon", provided he meets the requirements. (4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th.) It is easily concealed, the blade tucks away into the handle, +4 bonus total. There may only be one "extension" out at one time, if more than one is out at once, none function, and it is considered an improvised weapon. Opening one extension and closing another is a move action.

Inkstick : This extension of the Knife of Many Things has a very effective drawing tool, being able to be used on most surfaces, to draw multiple things, as well as write messages. It may not be thought to be very effective, but still good for the simple use of writing messages. (Can be selected at 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th.)

Lightstick: There is an extension of this "weapon" that allows the user to flip open a hidden stick of metal that constantly glows with light. It clearly illuminates up to 10 feet around the user. (Can be selected at 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th.)

Vial: This extension seems to come from nowhere, maybe extending from the hilt of the blade, but it holds up to 1 ounces of liquid. The vial itself is much smaller than the wished for dimensions, being .5 inches wide and about an inch in length. (Can be selected at 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th.)

Magnifier: This extension has twofold uses. One, it can be used to create a fire, as a Magnifying Class might be used, but instead takes a standard action to light, and bright sunlight. It also lets the user use this function as if it were a Spyglass, magnifying objects up to twice their size. (Can be selected at 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th.)

Disarming: This extension, as the name implies, is extremely good at disarming one's enemy. This can be used in combat as a dagger of equal size, dealing 1d4 + Str bonus, but is much more effective in the use of disarming, causing the Bricoleur to not provoke an attack of opportunity when attempting to disarm an opponent, nor does the opponent have a chance to disarm the Bricoleur. The Bricoleur also gain a +4 bonus on the opposed attack roll the Bricoleur makes to disarm its opponent. This bonus stacks with that of the feat Improved Disarm. (Can be selected at 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th.)

Grappling: This extension is an intensely useful on for the general explorer, as well as for the Bricoleur, protruding prongs unfold from the start of the hilt, while a hidden spool dispenses thread which has all the properties of a silk rope. (Can be selected at 4th, 6th, 8th, and 10th.)

Poison Neutralizer The attachment on this can be stuck into most foods and drinks to add a counterdose to all types of natural poisons. It does not rid people of the poison if it already has been ingested, or the poison is already in their bloodstream. This can only be placed in the food/drink of the person to work effectively. It cannot be ingested, or used on poisoned weapons. (Can be selected at 6th, 8th, and 10th.)

Lockpick: There is an extension of this "weapon" that looks like a tiny strip of manipulative metal that easily slips into locks, and another part can help the user to disable traps. If the user is a rogue, it provides the necessary tools in the stead of a "Thieves' Tools", giving the user a +4 bonus to Disable Device and Open Lock when used. (Can be selected at 6th, 8th, and 10th.)

File: This is to be used on inanimate objects, can be used to deal 1d4 damage a round as a full action to an inanimate object, ignoring its hardness.. This can only be used in a logical manner. Not to saw away at a golem. A logical, common-sensical manner.
(Can be selected at 8th, and 10th.)

Injector: This extension is a type of the Vial extension, except it can be used offensively, linked straight to the knife function. You may fill the Injector’s vial with any poison, and the poison affects the blade function, poisoning it for all purposes and effects. The poison lasts for ten attacks hitting the opponent, at which point the poison vial must be refilled. (Can be selected at 8th, and 10th.)

Stungun: This attachment allows the user to swiftly paralyze anyone in his way, to an extent. It extends a large electrical charge, which while only slightly damaging, causes all muscles of the target to spasm uncontrollably, rendering their limbs useless for an extremely short period of time. The user may make a touch attack against someone and that person makes a fortitude save if the touch attack hits equal to 15+(1d10). If the target fails their fortitude save, they proceed to take 1d6 damage, and they are paralyzed for two rounds. (Can be selected at 10th.)

Salve: This extension uses a small tray which contains a healing salve. It has the benefit of having the effect of either filling the stomach of the user when ingested, or the effect of a Cure Serious Wounds spell if applied to a wound. The salve can be refilled by making an alchemy check of 30. If the check does not succeed, you must wait an hour before retrying, and should be in a different area. Applying the salve takes a full rounnd action that provokes Attacks of Opportunity, eating the salve is a standard action. (Can be selected at 10th.)

Ductile Adhesive (Su):
This the elongated name for what most Bricoleurs call “Duct Tape.” Originally created by a couple drunk wizards and rogues at a party. A Bricoleur at the party swiftly realized its multitude of uses and took it for himself, asking the wizards to make more. The wizards did better than that,, helping the Bricoleur create a way to make it out of scrap materials and spell residue, marveling at the Bricoleur’s obsession with this… useless Adhesive. Well, the Bricoleur can create a ‘roll” of this “Duct Tape” at this level, coming across the secrets of it. He can create one roll a week of 100 ft. of “Duct Tape”, in a process that takes 4 hours, which cannot be reduced by any form of Random Usefulness. You need not roll a craft check to create it , the Bricoleuer knows by heart how to make it. This “Duct Tape” can be used for many purposes, which the creative Bricoluer swiftly analyzes and discovers multiple ways to use it at this level, finding more and more as he progresses through this prestige class. The creation and personification of a new roll of duct tape neutralizes the previous one, changing it into an inert lump of garbage.

Tangle: It’s simply tossing a length of Duct Tape at a foe. If you succeed on an touch attack roll with the “Duct Tape”, the person is treated as if they had been hit successfully with a tanglefoot bag. (5 ft of Duct Tape required)

Wrap: So it doesn’t quite succeed at replacing a bandage, but it does its best. The user may take ten on a heal check, wrapping the wounded area in “Duct Tape”, which helps to stop the bleeding. (10 ft of Duct Tape required)

Tape: The obvious use. For all intents and purposes, treat the stickiness of the Duct Tape as would be Sovereign Glue., except that it can be torn off with a 15+(Bricoleur Class Level) strength check. (10 ft of Duct Tape required)

Improved Random Usefulness (Ex):
Beginning at 5th level, the Bricoleur improves his craft at making objects, no matter what their type, which allows him to make an Craft check with his highest Craft modifier and have it affect any of the craft abilities. He can use this Craft check to create nearly any makeshift object, as well as those listed under the Craft check. Using unbelievable methods of quick and dirty substitution of necessary items with that of easy to find ones, the Bricoleur can create nearly any item. As an addition to this, by making a check with a +10 or higher roll than the DC, the Bricoleur can create the item needed in a much shorter time period, two time units less than normal. If it was to be days, it would be reduced to that long in minutes, if it were hours, it would be reduced to that long in rounds, and if it was minutes, it would be reduced to one round. These items are unstable because of their rickshaw nature, and eventually fall apart after they're made, lasting for 8/hours per Bricoleur level.

Improved Ductile Adhesive (Su):
This the elongated name for what most Bricoleurs call “Duct Tape.” Originally created by a couple drunk wizards and rogues at a party. A Bricoleur at the party swiftly realized its multitude of uses and took it for himself, asking the wizards to make more. The wizards did better than that, helping the Bricoleur create a way to make it out of scrap materials and spell residue, marveling at the Bricoleur’s obsession with this… useless Adhesive. Well, the Bricoleur can create a ‘roll” of this “Duct Tape” at this level, coming across the secrets of it. He can create one roll a week of 200 ft. of “Duct Tape”, in a process that takes 4 hours, which cannot be reduced by any form of Random Usefulness. The previous uses are still available for this skill. The creation and personification of a new roll of duct tape neutralizes the previous one, changing it into an inert lump of garbage.

Rope: Using any length of the “Duct Tape”, the Bricoleur can make a makeshift rope that works as a Silk Rope would, except the user cannot let go unless he wishes to, enabling him to make climb checks with the “Duct Tape” rope at a +4 bonus. (Feet of Ductile Adhesive depends)

Binding: Can be used to bind someone, taping them with the “Duct Tape” and keeping them from moving ,as would be done with normal ropes. Make the check as normal, but there is a -10 penalty to all Escape Artist attempts the victim makes due to the stickiness of the “Duct Tape”. (10 ft of “Duct Tape” required.)

Silence: Used to silence a spellcaster, or an incredibly annoying party member, causing them to have to either cast their spells silently, or not talk for a while. To use this specific function “Duct Tape”, make a touch attack while holding the “Duct Tape”. If the touch attack succeeds, they must cast spells silently and use sign language to speak, as their mouth is ineffective. They may remove the tape with a 15+(Bricoleur Class Level) Str Check. (5 ft of “Duct Tape” required.)

Evasion (Ex):

At 9th level and higher, a Bricoleur can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility. If he makes a successful Reflex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the Bricoleur is wearing light armor or no armor. A helpless Bricoleur does not gain the benefit of evasion.

Perfected Random Usefulness (Ex):
Beginning at 10th level, the Bricoleur expresses innate mastery at his craft of making objects, no matter what their type, which allows him to make an Craft check with his highest Craft modifier and have it affect any of the craft abilities. He can use this Craft check to create nearly any makeshift object, as well as those listed under the Craft check. Using unbelievable methods of quick and dirty substitution of necessary items with that of easy to find ones, the Bricoleur can create nearly any item. As an addition to this, by making a check with a +20 or higher roll than the DC, the Bricoleur can create the item needed in a much shorter time period, three time units less than normal. If it was to be days, it would be reduced to that long in rounds, if it were hours, it would be reduced to that long in rounds, and if it was minutes, it would be reduced to a swift action. These items are unstable because of their rickshaw nature, and eventually fall apart after they're made, lasting for 1/day per Bricoleur level.

Ductile Adhesive Mastery (Su):
This the elongated name for what most Bricoleurs call “Duct Tape.” Originally created by a couple drunk wizards and rogues at a party. A Bricoleur at the party swiftly realized its multitude of uses and took it for himself, asking the wizards to make more. The wizards did better than that,, helping the Bricoleur create a way to make it out of scrap materials and spell residue, marveling at the Bricoleur’s obsession with this… useless Adhesive. Well, the Bricoleur can create a ‘roll” of this “Duct Tape” at this level, coming across the secrets of it. He can create one roll a week of 300 ft. of “Duct Tape”, in a process that takes 4 hours, which cannot be reduced by any form of Random Usefulness. The previous uses are still available for this skill. The creation and personification of a new roll of duct tape neutralizes the previous roll, changing it into an inert lump of garbage. The constant cost on wallet is carried over to the new roll without breaking, however.

Wallet: Creates an extradimensional wallet which can actually contain almost anything. The extradimensional wallet contains up to the amount defined by a type 3 bag of holding, but only weighs 5 lbs. Unfortunately, the creation of this extradimensional space uses up a constant supply of “Duct Tape” to maintain the walls, roughly 75 ft./week per Wallet made. Thus, only a total of 4 wallets may be made, if the user wishes to not have any other use of the functions “Duct Tape” gives. (75 ft. to create, a maintenance cost of 75 ft of duct tape per week is required to maintain the walls of the extradimensional space. If the space is not defined, it collapses upon itself and the items within are lost.)

Seal: A strip of “Duct Tape” can Seal extradimensional spaces off to the world, as well as any portal leading to another dimension. The Strip of “Duct Tape” cannot be removed from the other side of the portal, but can be removed from its place on the side it was originally on by a 25 DC strength check, reopening the portal. (10 ft. of Duct Tape)

Fix: Fix anything with “Duct Tape”. Slap it on a broken door, fixed. Slap it on a broken sword hilt, fixed. Slap it on a hole in armor, fixed. It functions as a Mending spell would, but can also repair constructs, as well as flesh, healing/repairing 2d8 to the item/construct/being. It is also useful in the fact that you can use it in any of your makeshift Random Usefulness items, raising the time they stay intact to 1 week/Bricoleur lvl. (20 ft. of Duct Tape)

"Look, my stuff works. It doesn't need to look pretty to work. Just like brute force not always working. Wait, that doesn't work. Nevermind." -Bricoleur attempting to sell makeshift gear.

Note: All and every Bricoleur item created cannot be sold for profit purely because of their looks. It’s also a balance to the class. After all, we couldn’t have people making thousands of gold per day while sitting in absolute safety.

What does the name mean? Is the duct tape free to make?

Anyways, it looks like a handy thief PrC. Don't know how it will hold up in combat though. I think it'd be funny to see a bricoleur make a longsword with his Craft (leatherworking) skill.

A Bricoleur is one who constructs things from what is available.

In french, it means to tinker with things.

It's great for getting out of tight situations, and such like that.

He'd use a combination of herbs, wine and rocks, cutting out the rough outline of a sword from a strip of leather, then harden it using the mixture of herbs, rocks, and wine, and managing to harden the bastardization of the blacksmith craft within seconds. He could also manage to bake it using the magnifying glass, but I think insulting the blacksmithing craft is much more fun.

It was meant as a Macgyver class.

And yes, the Ductile Adhesive is free to make, but can only be made once per week.

Is the class perfect? Does it need nothing?

This is utterly fantastic. I love it. I'd be tempted to improve the number of skill points they get, up to 8. But otherwise, brilliant. These guys would make an interesting campaign twist.

I had this idea about how to introduce one, too. Consider a portal of monsters coming in. A Bricoleur rushes in at the last moment, making a sword out of rocks and twigs, then manages to get through the opposition to the portal, then throws the makeshift sword to the side, tearing out his roll of "Duct Tape" and sealing the portal shut. XD

But anyway, he's already got two good saves and is about as good as a rogue already in abilities and such. If anyone seconds it, I may change it. [Wants more people PEACHing]

This class has awesome flavor. I love the supernatural uses you've applied to duct tape. The class really needs some sort of abilities to help them more in combat (maybe a sticky duct tape whip, or some way to dish out traps/caltrops in a matter of seconds?) I think, but outside of combat they seem to be really set. I think it would be awesome to expand on the uses of duct tape as well (mostly cause I think you did a great job on the ones you've made!)... maybe even to the point where a bricoleur might have to pick-and-choose, like a spell list.
