My last characters lifeline was just cut so I have to make a new one. I was thinking of taking a level of effigy master. Is if worth the lost caster level?

It's entirely up to you. Personally, I wouldn't take the class, as I don't do construct wizards ever, I don't even do the summoner stuff. But if you are going to be using lots of effigies, then sure, it's a pretty nice class: by level 5 you get a +4 boost to the amount of HD you can have. Although 4 bonus HD aren't all that much. I guess the point is, you could do a whole lot worse.

The effigy master adds his class level to the HD he can create an effigy up to. My personal favorite is making an adult chromatic dragon that I can use as my mode of transportation, and in general when in the wilderness nothing beats an adult chromatic dragon as a bodyguard. Of course that doesn't stop me from bringing along a Storm giant anyway.

I like them, but the question you have to ask yourself is, "Is the level loss worth it TO YOU?"

Personally I can see NO benefit losing a caster level for ANY reason at all. None.

Still, if you're cool with it, effigies can be awesome. Check with your DM and see if he'll allow Templates added to a creature original that the effigy is made out of. I enjoy making dragons with wendigo, fairy, and legendary templates.

Remeber though. The cost for creating an effigy is quite enormous. If you create an effigy master, you are likely (unless you gimp yourself) to create many effigies. This cost is outragous. Personally, I'd rather take Leadership feat, or Animate a hydra, than spend all that cash and lose a caster level.

As a warning, the Effigy rules are quite broken. Adding templates does not increase the cost of the Effigy at all, so you could very cheaply make a Half Red Dragon Half White Dragon Half every other dragon out there Shadow Dark Riding Dog... and it would have a strength in the triple digets.

go artificer first then take a few levels, its less likely to take away much from the artificer than from a spellcaster plus it has better combat abilities from the start, maybe a level dip in sorcerer or wizard to help with the required spell (simulcrum, i believe, only need be on the spell list not able to cast) this is also a good coice do to the bonus feats, you get the required feat as a bonus feat plus homunculi as a supplement to the effigies

Most people have the oninion of "NEVER LOSE A CASTER LEVEL, EVER! YOU'LL BE FOREVER GIMPED AS A CASTER AND DIE TO A SWARM OF DISPLACER BEASTS!!!!!1!!"

I, however, don't. If you want to go the construct route, I totally recommend taking a single level in this class. Without it, you'll need to invest in 3 feats (Craft Wondrous, Craft Arms/Armor, Craft Construct) and let's face it: you're already feat starved. Losing a single caster level will barely sting, especially if you're putting your effigies to good use. I just wouldn't recommend losing another caster level.

I heard a very good saying once: "If you can take a level or take a feat, always take the level. After all, you get 20 levels and only 7 feats."
