The Battlemaster

As wizards dream to achieve someday the power of the archmage, fighters aspire to become the renowned battlemasters, the greatest combatants known in the multiverse. Just as archmages learn to manipulate their spells in new and unique ways, battlemasters learn how to apply and develop their combat skills into something completely new.

This path is open only to the most powerful of fighters. The requisite is skill in combat, no mattering how the aspirant reached it. From the heavily armoured dwarf to the rapier-using elf, passing to the well-balanced human mercenary, any of them may become battlemasters once they have mastered enough combat skills and tactics to give the step forward to a new level of martial prowess.

Weapon and Armor proficiency: A first level Battlemaster can choose to exchange any of all of the following groups of proficiency for extra feats.

• Martial Weapon Proficiency (all melee weapons)
• Martial Weapon Proficiency (all ranged weapons)
• Medium Armor Proficiency
• Heavy Armor Proficiency (requires Medium Armor Proficiency)
• Shield Proficiency (including tower shield)

He can exchange any proficiency for any bonus feat that has Improved Unarmed Strike Weapon Finesse or Weapon Focus as a prerequisite. He must have at least one of those feats in order to benefit from this class feature and must meet the prerequisites of the selected feat.

Proficiencies exchanged by this class features can not be regained by multiclassing. The only way to regain them is by selecting them again with feats.

Art of War (Ex): A Battlemaster learns, through study and practice, how to get the most out of every tactic he learns.

A first level battlemaster can apply a +1 bonus to the benefits of any the following feats that grant him a numerical bonus to combat-related rolls.

Combat Expertise, Dodge, Greater Weapon Focus, Greater Weapon Specialization, Improved Bull Rush, Improved Disarm, Improved Initiative, Improved Grapple, Improved Overrun, Improved Sunder, Improved Trip, Mobility, Point-blank shot, Power Attack, Two-Weapon Defense, Weapon Focus, and Weapon Specialization.

Feats from other sources may also be enhanced, depending on the DM’s approval. I general, any feat that grants a bonus to attack rolls, damage rolls or any type of combat- related check or opposed check can benefit from this class feature.

For example, a battlemaster could choose to improve the benefits of his Weapon Focus feat, increasing the bonus to his attack rolls with the selected weapon by +1. On the following round, he could shift the bonus to his Power attack feat, dealing an extra +1 point of damage when using the feat.

This bonus increases to +2 at level 4 and allows the fighter to improve two of his feats at once, +3 at level 7 and 3 feats, and +4 at level 10, affecting 4 feats at the same time. Shifting the bonus from any one feat to other is a swift action.

It must be noted that the effect of this class feature works exactly like the enhanced feat. For example, since the effects of Greater Weapon Specialization overlap with those of Weapon Specialization, that means that enhancing both feats at once with this class feature is pointless and do not have any effect.

Focused Study (Ex): At 3rd, 6th, and 9th level, a battlemaster gains a bonus feat, selected from the fighter bonus feat list, with one limitation. The feat acquired must have another feat as prerequisite and the battlemaster must already possess that feat.

Also, starting on 3rd level, the battlemaster adds half his Battlemaster class level to his Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence scores for the purpose of meeting prerequisites for feats.

Defensive Insight (Ex): At 5th level, the battlemaster combat style produces an unexpected defensive synergy. He can choose any one of the following benefits.

-Armored reliance: When wearing heavy armor, you gain DR equal to 1/3 your battlemaster level, rounded down. This DR stacks with any DR from the same type (x/-).

-Armored Speed: You reduce the speed penalty of any armor you wear by 10 ft. and increase your max dexterity bonus to AC by +2. You can not increase your speed beyond the penalty imposed by your armor.

-Canny Defense: When wearing light or no armor, you gain a dodge bonus to armor class equal to your Intelligence modifier. This bonus can not be higher than your battlemaster level

-Shield Mastery: You can add your shield bonus to your armor class even against touch attacks. You also gain an extra +2 shield bonus to armor class when using any shield and reduce the armor check penalty by 2.

-Uncanny Dodge (as the rogue class feature). This improves to Improved Uncanny Dodge at level 10.

Offensive Talent (Ex): At 2nd level and again at 8th, a Battlemaster learns a new special trick to use with his impressive combat skill. He can select any of the following benefits.

-Blade leverage: If you use a two handed weapon, you add twice your strength modifier to damage rolls instead of the normal one and half.

-Flawless Strike: You can use your Dexterity or Intelligence modifier in addition to of your Strength modifier to damage rolls with any one handed or light melee weapon or with any ranged or thrown weapon.

-Maiming Critical: You deal 2 points of Constitution damage to a foe on a successful critical hit. You can select this ability more than once.

-Piercing lunge: All your attacks ignore 1 point of damage reduction for every 2 levels of battlemaster you have. Also, you reduce fortification effects by 3% for every battlemaster level you have.

-Tactical Advantage: You gain a bonus to damage rolls against prone, flanked, flat-footed and grappled foes equal to ½ your battlemaster level.

Master of War (Ex): A 20 level Battlemaster is the undisputed lord of the battlefield. If he rolls a 1 on any kind of attack roll, he can re-roll the attack until he rolls anything that’s not a 1.
