| Danahan01-18-07, 11:59 PM | GHOST HUNTER Many view ghosts with an inquisitive eye, devoting their lives to the investigation of these abnormalities of nature. Some were tormented as children by phantoms underneath the bed or in the closet, only to grow mad with personal anguish. Others pursue personal quests to help these wayward spirits move onto the next world and find everlasting peace. A very few are driven by the incredible adrenaline rush they get when combating these specters. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/bovd_gallery/88161_620_14.jpg Requirements: Base Attack Bonus: +4 Skills: Knowledge (Religion) 8 Feats: Either Ghost Scarred (Libris Mortis), or Transdimensional Spell (Complete Divine) Game Rule Information: Base Attack Bonus: Average Hit Die: D8 Fortitude Save: Good Reflex Save: Poor Will Save: Good Class Skills: Concentration (Con) Diplomacy (Cha) Heal (Wis) Knowledge (Religion) (Int) Knowledge (Undead) (Int) Profession (Wis) Spellcraft (Int) Search (Wis) Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Intelligence modifier Class Features: Weapons and Armor Proficiency: Ghost Hunters gain no additional proficiency with any weapons or armor. Detect Undead (Incorporeal), Spectral Guard Spark of Life +2 Strike the Immaterial Spark of Life +4 Pierce the Veil Turn Undead (Su): Ghost hunter levels stack with the levels of all other classes that grant turn undead for the purpose of determining the character’s effective cleric level for turning. Detect Undead (Incorporeal) [1st-level]: Ghost hunters can sense the spectral energies that emanate from incorporeal undead. At will, the ghost hunter can detect undead as a spell-like ability, although she can only detect incorporeal undead in this fashion. Spectral Guard (Su) [1st-level]: Combating ghosts has granted her a keen understanding of spectral assaults. She gains a +1 deflection bonus to AC per level of this prestige class when defending against melee or ranged attacks used by incorporeal undead. She also gains a +1 bonus on all saving throws per level of this prestige class when defending against spells used by incorporeal undead. Spark of Life (Su) [2nd/4th-level]: She has a very strong life force and even after death a spark of life remains in her body. She is immune to the create spawn ability used by incorporeal undead and can never become such a creature under the control of its killer. At 2nd-level, she gains a +2 bonus on all saving throws when defending against supernatural abilities used by incorporeal undead. At 4th-level, this bonus increases to +4. Strike the Immaterial (Ex) [3rd-level]: She is extremely determined to hit these phantoms and her attacks are focused to an unexpected precision. Any melee or ranged attack the ghost hunter uses against incorporeal undead is capable of delivering a critical hit. Pierce the Veil (Su) [5th-level]: Her attacks pierce the veil between this world and the afterlife. Any melee or ranged attack the ghost hunter uses against incorporeal undead strikes as if it had the ghost touch special ability. Any spell, spell-like ability, or supernatural ability the ghost hunter uses against incorporeal undead causes damage as if it were a force effect. |
| jalaziel01-19-07, 02:06 PM | Well, the obvious comment is that this is a hugely specific PrC and quite obviously built for a very incorporeal campaign! First off I would increase the HD to d8 - in line with a Cleric (as BAB and saves are). Then I would remove the Favoured Enemy requirement and put in place a feat requirement focusing on incorporeal foe (like Transdimensional Spell from Complete Divine, or Ghost-scarred from Libris Mortis). Alternatively, if you are building this for your current Ranger character to grow into, then replace the BAB and Saves with a Ranger base and maintain the Favoured Enemy requirement. I'd also increase the Skill Points to Ranger base in that case. In other words - play to the strengths of your character... and given the lack of '+1 divine spellcasting level' in the PrC I am guessing you are coming into this from a non-Cleric background. The benefits are so specific that you should be OK maintaining a solid base progression. The Turndown Death's Advances bonus to saves should really be driven by your levels in this Prc rather than your Wisdom bonus - that balances the ability (does you character has a very high wisdom?:D ). I'd say get a +1 bonus to saves & AC vs. Incorporeal undead attacks for every Ghosthunter level. As such I'd move it to 1st level so you gain on this every level. Strike the Immaterial seems a bit redundant as you're likely to have a Ghost Touch weapon if you are constantly fighting incorporeal undead...or at least a +1 magical weapon. So instead I would simply provide a +1 to hit incorporeal undead and also build on the description of "keen precision" to have it increase the critical threat range by one step if the creature is susceptible to critical hits, or allow you to critical an incorporeal undead if you normally couldn't. Move it to 3rd level as it sits there nicely, halfway to Pierce the Veil...read on... Pierce the Veil is kinda powerful - I'd move that to 5th level as the Grand Finale - all your atack possibilities can effect the incorporeal! That is quite an end goal in itself... Lastly drop the Rest In Peace ability. As such the progression looks like this: Progression as Ranger (or Cleric - you decide) for BAB, saves and skills. 1st level: Detect Incorporeal Undead (sp), Reject Death's Advances (ex) 2nd level: Spark of Life I (su) 3rd level: Strike the Immaterial (ex) 4th level: Spark of Life II (su) 5th level: Pierce the Veil (su) Lastly, I would allow the Ghosthunter levels to stack with a Ranger's for Favoured Enemy & Animal Companion, or stack with a Cleric's for Turning. Definitely NOT to stack for spellcasting though... Some great ideas in there though - might have to think about an incorporeal campaign.... |
