Hey all,

I was playing around with character concepts and in theory I really like the Pale Master, and I was wondering what peoples experiences with them were.

I was playing around with the idea of a lvl 5 wizard lvl 4 pale master, but that first level of getting nothing at all is a real speed bump, and horrid for spell casting level advancement.

What are others thought on the PrC? Does the kick in the balls to caster level advancement pay off in the end (Considering the removal of the cost of animate dead) ?

The cost removal thing is nice, and I see a lot of Dread Necromancer 18/Palemaster 2 builds for that very reason. Dread Necromancer is the most obvious entry, because a lot of Palemaster abilities involve punching someone in the face. The best, of course, is the one where you punch someone in the face so hard he turns into a zombie! And Dread Necromancers get damage reduction and self healing, so they can actually get close enough to do that, plus they make stronger undead.

You could also do Dread Necromancer 10/Palemaster 10, but the largest issue there is that the DN 8 ability is based on Dread Necromancer class level, so you lose half your undead for taking all that Palemaster. That freaking hurts.

Now, a Gestalt build that was Necromancer/Palemaster//Dread Necromancer would be hilarious and awesome, and you could punch people into zombies all over the place while cackling madly.

Libris Mortis, I believe. Usually used as a two level dip for hardcore necromancers, but it's interesting as a 10 level class.

I've thought about getting it for a necromancer specialist wizard, but I'm kinda unsure... Some of the abilities are fairly nice, and getting a mini-leadership is quite useful, but the first level is awful.

The big thing is the savings on Animate Dead. That said, you could use other items to get around it... maybe.

I dunno, some of the other abilities are imo better than saving on a few black onyxes every now and then.

Yeah, that was the thing that was holding me back, that dreadful first level, no gains at all and losing a caster level to bump (If Im a wizard) my casting progression down to the progress of a sorcerer.
