| Ertai Planeswalker06-03-07, 10:29 PM | THE PHOENIX ADEPT http://www.gryphonsmoon.com/cat/express-yourself/cards/phoenix-rising.t.jpg Phoenix Adepts are individuals who are fascinated with the Phoenix. Some revere the Phoenix for it's alleged immortality, others for it's tremendous power or simply for it's grandeur. Phoenixes are seen as a sign of the gods or a god itself in a lot of civilizations, Phoenix Adepts their greatest devotees. Prerequisites: Skills: Knowledge [The Planes] 10 ranks. Spells: Ability to cast at least 3 fire spells, one of which must be 3rd level or higher. Special: Familiar and/or Animal Companion class feature. Class Skills: The Phoenix Adept’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Knowledge [All skills taken individually] (Int), Profession (Wis), and Spellcraft (Int). Skill points at each level: 2 + Int modifier. Hit Die: D6 Class Features: Weapon and armor proficiency: Phoenix Adepts do not gain any proficiency with weapons or armor. Spellcasting: At every level except the 1st and the 6th, the Phoenix Adept gains new spells per day and spells known as if she had gained a new level in a spellcasting class to which he or she belonged before adding the prestige class level. Gain Companion: At 1st level, the Phoenix Adept gains a Phoera as an animal companion and familiar. This replaces any existing familiar and or animal companion the Phoenix Adept had prior to acquiring this class. The Phoera gains extra hitdice, natural armor, improved ability scores and other abilities, based on it’s master Phoenix Adept class levels. as described in the special section at the end. Reform Companion: Normally, a Phoera takes 24 hours to hatch from it’s glass egg when killed. The Phoenix Adept can speed up this process by breeding the egg herself during an hour of meditation. After an hour of meditation, the Phoera hatches just as if 24 hours have passed. Starting at 7th level, the Phoenix Adept needs only 10 minutes of meditation to hatch the egg this way. Immolation (Su): As a full round action, the Phoera can immolate itself, producing a cloud of flame in a 20 foot high, 15 foot radius spread. Each creature in the area takes 1D6 points of damage per hitdie (Reflex DC 10+ ½HD+Con modifier for half). Half of this damage is fire, the other half results from divine power and is therefore not subject to elemental resisitance. After using this ability the Phoera is slain, so a glass egg is created from the ashes as normal by the Phoera’s Rise from the Ashes ability. Fusion (Ex): Starting at 2nd level, the Phoera can merge itself with it’s master. Doing so requires a full round action from the Phoera, as does unfusing. To start a fusion, the Phoera must be in a square adjacent to it’s master. The Phoera uses it’s 5 ft. step to enter the masters body to start the fusion. The fusion ritual lasts one full round, during which the master cannot take any actions (Though he is not helpless). If the Phoenix Adept takes any damage during this round, it must succeed on a concentration check with a DC equal to 10 + the damage dealt or the fusion fails, forcing the Phoera out of the masters body into an adjacent square. The fusion grants the Phoenix Adept extra powers, as described under the separate Fusion entries. These abilities are cumulative, so a 6th level Phoenix adept that fuses with his companion gains all abilities from fusion I, II and III. Fusion I: When the Phoera merges with it’s master it grants it’s master fire resistance 20, and it’s heat and ignite abilities (But with DC based on the Phoenix Adept’s hit dice and constituton). Defensive Aura (Su): The Phoera gains a deflection bonus to armor class equal to ½ it’s master’s class level. Fusion II: When fused, the Phoera grants it’s master the power to grow a pair of flaming wings from his back that do not harm himself. The wings allow him to fly at a speed of 60 feet., with good maneuverability (40 Feet if wearing heavy armor) Damage Reduction: The Phoera gains damage reduction 5/magic cold iron. Fusion III: When fused, the Phoera can use it’s Rise from the Ashes ablity to save it’s master from death. If it’s master is slain (Reduced to -10 hitpoints or below) while fused with the Phoera, the Phoera sacrifices itself to save it’s master life. The master immediatley receives the benefits of a Heal spell as cast by a 15th level caster, saving him or her from death. The Phoera is slain instead, immediatley ending the fusion. This ability is very straining for the Phoera’s lifeforce: the Phoera hatches from it’s egg 24 hours later as normal, but the Phoenix Adept cannot speed up this process with it’s Reform Companion ability. Fusion IV:.When fused with the Phoera, the Phoenix Adept gains the fire subtype and the Phoera’s Healing Fire ability. Increased Damage Reduction: The Phoera’s damage reduction improves to 10/magic cold iron. Fusion V: When the Phoera sacifices itself to save it’s masters life when fused (See Fuson III), the Phoera can be hatched sooner by it’s master with the Revive Companion ability. Additionally, when fused, the master and the Phoera can perform a Greater Immolation. It works just like the Phoera’s immolation ability, except the damage and save dc is based on the combined hit dice of the Phoera and it’s master, and using the highest constitution modifier between the two. 1 Minute after using this ability, the Phoenix Adept rises from the ashes, fully healed, and cured of all afflictions, but unfused. The Phoera is slain, and must rehatch as normal. The Phoenix Adept's Phoera Companion The Phoera is not OGL so i cannot post it or it's abilities here. It's found in MM3. To give you an idea, it starts out as a 3Hd firebird. The Phoenix Adept’s Phoera companion takes the place of the familiar and or animal companion the Phoenix Adept had prior to acquiring the class. It gains bonus hit dice, natural armor, increased ability scores and additional abilities based on the Phoenix Adept’s class level. Design note: In my group's view, the Phoenix is neutral, which is why the class does not have an alignment restriction. If you go by the MM2's lawful good version, then an alignment restriction of any good might be fitting. I am really curious what you think of this class and wether it could be improved. |
| LordArchaon06-04-07, 09:41 AM | I really think it's great! And seems to be balanced too. Out of pure curiosity, did you take the idea of Animal Companion + Familiar from the Arcane Hierophant? The only things I would change would be the damage reduction (to cold iron only, at leat at first) that I would also put in the Phoera's table, since it's a phoera ability. If you add some "fluff text" to the class I think you could have good chances in the new PrC Cookie Contest of The Official Class Cookie Contest (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=797241)! They need 6 participants, why don't you enter with your Phoenix Adept? :) |

I thought of the combination Animal Companion + Familiar myself, though a friend of mine whom i showed the class too told me the Arcane Hierophant had it too. But i do not know that class, i really made it up myself! The damage reduction is based on the Phoenix's damage reduction. The Phoenix has damage reduction 10/magic cold iron, so my class grants it as well. I'll have a look at that contest. |
