| Stado10-31-04, 05:43 PM | Sacred Bowsaint “Disperse foul creature! Or may my arrows pierce your wicked hide!” — Melosa Adele, human sacred bowsaint Sacred bowsaints are those people whom have devoted themselves to protecting the lives of innocents from the malign and unnatural forces of the world. Their skill with a bow is impressive, while their ability to take down their devoted enemies is even more so for they can often slay lowly undead and minor evil outsiders with a single arrow. Some travel from village to village, doing what they can for the people there, while others stay in one village. This village, more often than not, has a very bad demon or undead problem. Clerics, paladins and rangers who despise evil outsiders or the undead often become sacred bowsaints, though the druid who wishes to protect nature from such creatures also makes a good sacred bowsaint. NPC sacred bowsaints can be found in small and large villages alike, and are either there to rid the village of undead or evil outsiders, or are simply waiting for the next problem to arise. Requirements To qualify to become a sacred bowsaint, a character must fulfill all the following criteria. Alignment: Any good. Base Attack Bonus: +4. Skills: Heal 8 ranks, Knowledge (religion) 4 ranks, Knowledge (the planes) 4 ranks. Feats: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot or Zen Archery, Weapon Focus (longbow or shortbow). Spells: Able to cast 1st-level divine spells. Special: Must have protected a village/town from an evil outsider or undead creature of greater or equal Hit Dice by killing it, either individually or as a part of a group composed of no more than four members. Class Skills The sacred bowsaint's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Heal (Wis), Knowledge (history) (Int), Knowledge (nature) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Knowledge (the planes) (Int), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), and Spot (Wis). See Player's Handbook, Chapter 4: Skills for skill descriptions. Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier. Hit Die: d6. Devoted Enemies (Ex): When she enters the class, a sacred bowsaint swears to rid the world of both evil outsiders and the undead, devoting herself to the cause. Due to her detest for and extensive study of her chosen foes, she gains a +2 bonus on opposed ability checks and Bluff, Listen, Sense Motive, Spot, and Survival checks when using them against evil outsiders and undead creatures. Likewise, she receives a +2 bonus on weapon attack and damage rolls against these kinds of creatures. This ability functions as favored enemy (evil outsiders) and favored enemy (undead) for the purpose of spells and effects. Sacred Arrow (Su): At 1st level, every nonmagical arrow a sacred bowsaint nocks and lets fly becomes sacred, gaining a +1 enhancement bonus and the holy weapon property. Unlike magic weapons created by normal means, a sacred bowsaint need not spend experience points or gold pieces to accomplish this task. However, a sacred bowsaint's sacred arrows only function for her. For every two levels the character advances past 1st level in the prestige class, the sacred arrows she creates gain +1 greater potency to their enhancement bonus. (+1 at 1st level, +2 at 3rd level, +3 at 5th level, +4 at 7th level, and +5 at 9th level). Spells A sacred bowsaint has the ability to cast a small number of divine spells. To cast a sacred bowsaint spell, a sacred bowsaint must have a Wisdom score of at least 10 + the spell's level, so a sacred bowsaint with a Wisdom of 10 or lower cannot cast these spells. Sacred bowsaint bonus spells are based on Wisdom, and saving throws against these spells have a DC of 10 + spell level + the sacred bowsaint's Wisdom modifier. When a sacred bowsaint gets 0 spells per day of a given spell level (for instance, 1st-level spells for a 1st-level sacred bowsaint), she gains only the bonus spells she would be entitled to based on her Wisdom score for that spell level. The sacred bowsaint's spell list appears below. A sacred bowsaint has access to any spell of the list and can freely choose which to prepare, just as a cleric. A sacred bowsaint prepares and casts spells just as a cleric does (though a sacred bowsaint cannot lose a spell to cast a cure spell in its place). Purifying Touch (Su): At 2nd level, a sacred bowsaint's touch affects things as the spell purify food and drink, although it also purifies acidic liquids, turning them into clean water. Additionally, a sacred bowsaint can make a melee touch attack a number of times per day equal to 3 + her Charisma modifier against an evil outsider or undead creature that deals 1d6 per sacred bowsaint level points of damage. Detect Evil (Sp): At will, a sacred bowsaint can use detect evil, as the spell. Sacred Presence (Su): At 6th level, the mere presence of the sacred bowsaint hollows the ground on which she stands, functioning as if a permanent consecrate spell centred on herself and with a few other differences. This 20-foot-radius emanation affects evil outsiders in addition to undead creatures and also applies a +4 sacred bonus to Charisma checks made to turn such creatures within this area and a -2 penalty on attack rolls, damage rolls, and saves for such creatures whom enter the consecrated area instead of the normal +3 bonus and -1 penalty. A sacred bowsaint may also now expend uses of her purifying touch to turn or destroy undead or evil outsiders within the consecrated area of her sacred presence as a cleric equal to her sacred bowsaint level. Doing so also purifies things within this area as the spell purify food and drink, thus giving it an area of effect. Purifying Arrow (Su): At 8th level, a sacred bowsaint can charge her arrows with her purifying touch ability. For every use of purifying touch a sacred bowsaint expends, she deals an additional 2d6 points of damage against an evil outsider or undead creature on her next attack. In effect, any arrow charged with a sacred bowsaint's purifying touch is also treated as the spell purify food and drink, thus giving it range. Bane Arrow (Ex): At 10th level, any arrow shot off by a sacred bowsaint also gains the benefit of being a bane (evil outsider) and bane (undead) arrow. This effect also stacks with a sacred bowsaint's sacred arrow ability for the purpose of determining enhancement bonus and damage. Ex-Sacred Bowsaint A sacred bowsaint who ceases to be good or who wilfully commits an evil act loses all sacred bowsaint abilities (excluding the bowsaint's weapon and armor proficiencies). She may not progress any further as a sacred bowsaint. She regains her abilities and advancement potential if she atones for her infractions (see the atonement spell description, Player's Handbook, page 201), as appropriate. Sacred Bowsaint Spell List 1st Level: arrow mind, bless weapon, detect favored enemy, guided shot, woodwisp arrow. 2nd Level: align weapon, brilliant energy arrow, delay poison, exacting shot, spellslayer arrow. 3rd Level: arrowsplit, darkflame arrow, magic circle against evil, remove curse, remove disease. 4th Level: arrow storm, bloodfreeze arrow, doublestrike arrow, shadow arrow, wall of good. |
| Stado10-31-04, 05:49 PM | Alternatively, you could remove the female prerequisite if a player really wanted their male character to be a priest/ess. You could also add "Sacred" in front of the PrC's name if your DM/campaign already has a class that uses this name. I'd like to see some criticism, good or bad, I don't care. Heck, just tell me whether you like it or not, though I'd prefer if you gave a reason as to your opinion. |
| darczero11-01-04, 03:12 AM | Purifying Touch. As written, that's 10d6 damage on a Touch attack at will. |
| Stado11-01-04, 03:53 AM | Oi, I didn't quite take into account the full power of the ability when I wrote it, it's way too powerful as is. I'll limit the use of the touch attack per day, that should help. |
| Stado11-02-04, 10:57 PM | Any more comments? I've updated and added new abilities to make it a tad better. I seem to think it's pretty balanced, though I could be wrong. |
| darczero11-02-04, 11:33 PM | FF4, Rosa; Inuyasha, Kagome. The basis for this PrC. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the theme I'm seeing. |
| Stado11-03-04, 01:48 AM | Indeed, you're correct on both accounts. Good guess. I liked the idea of a demon-killing, bow-wielding woman and think I've made it pretty well. I also find it always helps to play games and watch anime to get good ideas for D&D content. |
| Kiirnodel11-04-04, 03:17 PM | The flavor for it seems decent, I think its actually a semi decent class, though I would probably end up agreeing with a rename and dropping the female requirement. Sure females with bows are cool, but I mean, try to be all inclusive unless the prestige class background requries it. The Priestess is a bad name. I'd suggest dropping the requirements to only second level divine spells. Thats just me. The class abilities and such seem incredibly balanced, I commend you but the Dragonstalker has a similar ability to the evil bane thing and they waited to give him that until 10th level. The only thing I'd suggest is switch Bane and Purify arrow. Great job :D |
| Stado11-04-04, 08:18 PM | First of all, thank you for your comments. Now, I believe I shall remove the female requirement since I myself feel in some way that it is unneeded. As for the name, I'll probably stick with Sacred Priest/Priestess, though if some one can come up with something better I'll use that; I didn't want a "Demon Hunter". It was previously at 2nd level, though I felt that the abilities were overpowered, but since then I have also balanced it out a bit more, I'll drop it back down to 2nd level. I'll switch the two as you suggested because I can see why I should do this. Thank you for pointing this out to me. |
| Kiirnodel11-04-04, 11:11 PM | Perfect! A well thought out class with excellent inpsiriations. |
| Gillies4809-23-06, 07:10 PM | This class sounds like the Quincy from Bleach. Its really interesting. I have a newbie question though, do you need to be a core class and preform the requistes to become a sacred preist? |
| Stado09-23-06, 09:52 PM | Well, you certainly need to meet the requirements, though I'm sure it's quite possible to do so without using any of the 'core' classes. Any divine spellcasting base class should do. |
| Red_Rabbit03-23-07, 02:04 AM | This might of been explained and I just didn't understand it, but why is this a Priest or Priestess. I didn't see any clerical power I'd change the name, but It doesn't look to bad. I've got afew things which I've written down (from these boards) and added it to a folder for my players to pick. This could probly make the cut if it's name wasn't a throw off. Seriously good work on this!!! The Rabbit P.S. Forgot to say this looks more like a Ranger class to me. Not sure if that was the goal or not? There just doesn't seem like a reason why any spellcaster such as: Cleric or Druid would take this class. |

Not sure if that was the goal or not? There just doesn't seem like a reason why any spellcaster such as: Cleric or Druid would take this class. It's more of a guardian than a priest/ess as D&D understands it, definitely - kind of a divine archer to match the one in the DMG. As Shakespeare might say, what is in a name? I'd consider making it non-evil, perhaps requiring Zen archery instead of precise shot, and maybe giving a divine spellcasting level every 3rd level (2,5,8). Consider either allowing some of the ranger/assassin arrow-enhancing spells from Champions of Ruin, or just having a lower divine spell requirement and giving it separate progression. After all, the character won't be the typical cleric but rather a specialized champion. |
| Stado02-15-08, 02:51 AM | I've actually changed this class quite a bit over the last couple of years without any sort of formal notification of an update. And while the last time I previously updated this prestige class on this site was sometime last year, I only did so to apply a half-assed modification to it's ability to affect both evil outsiders and undead creatures (previously, many of its abilities only affected evil outsiders, and I'd only altered its Purifying Touch and Purifying Arrow abilities so that they might also affect undead creatures). Going over much of the custom material on my computer, I felt the urge to actually finalize in some form the Sacred Bowsaint's (formally the Sacred Priest/Priestess, 'though this name was changed long ago) ability to affect undead creatures in addition to evil outsiders with all of its relevant abilities. So here I am, actually notify anyone that might be interested in this prestige of its progress. I'd also like to give credit to GorunNova for inspiration of the Sacred Presence ability, borrowed from his or her Miko prestige class (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=988761). In fact, as is painfully obvious, my own prestige class was initially based off of the miko of Japanese culture. Edit: Also, as a sort of long overdue reply to the two posts above, let me just say this: I'm probably going to add a form of divine spellcasting as this class, in its current form, is probably underpowered (now that the standard on class balance has changed quite a bit over the years). Now, whether this precludes a bonus to divine spellcasting level at certain intervals or whether this means its own, separate progression is largely undecided, however, for some reason I feel inclined to use the latter, even though I typically dislike both the Assassin and Blackguard prestige classes for this very feature. |
