I have given some thought to this class, and I threw out the old sheet and gave this class a completely new look. It combines the abilities of being fast, attacking fast, and enhances some of the charging abilities.

Special quote from Adriel Reed, Speed Athlete: "If you blink, you won't see me again. If you blink twice, you'll be dead...."
Level BAB Fortitude Reflex Will Special
1 +1 +0 +2 +0 Evasion
2 +2 +0 +3 +0 Combat Reflexes +10 speed
3 +3 +1 +3 +1 Spring Attack.
4 +4 +1 +4 +1 Focused Sprint - Can make a concentration check (DC20) in order to negate the AC penalties while charging. +20 speed
5 +5 +1 +4 +1 Flying Kick. Leap Attack.
6 +6 +2 +5 +2 Bounding Assault. +30 speed
7 +7 +2 +5 +2 Improved evasion. Mobile Sprinting - can change direction at will during charge.
8 +8 +2 +6 +2 +40 speed
9 +9 +3 +6 +3 Rapid Blitz
10 +10 +3 +7 +3 Battle Speed - can naturally haste 1 round per constitution modifier in a day. Sprint Collision. +50 speed

Sprint Collision - level 10 - the speed athlete is able to sacrifice all of their battle speed for one day to make a full speed charge at someone (they must have not used any battle speed so far that day). the conditions for damage are different with each type of attack. the speed athlete must be readied in order to be prepared to do this action. these are the special conditions.

level 1 - any distance under 90 ft.
level 2 - 90-150 ft. (note at this distance, the speed athlete will also be considered under a blur-like spell by natural effects:a 75% chance of miss:, this point is where the speed athlete is going the fastest)
level 3 - any distace over 150 ft.

Additional damage dealt during Sprint Collision
level 1 - 3d8
level 2 - 9d8
level 3 - 6d8

bludgeon effect
level 1 - brutal strike effect
level 2 - stunned for 3 rounds & knocked prone 10 ft away
level 3 - knocked prone

piercing effect
level 1 - nothing different
level 2 - stab through body. takes additional 3 blood loss damage for every round not healed
level 3 - same as flay

slashing effect
level 1 - nothing different
level 2 - has a 50% chance to completely cut off a body part, the higher being completely cut off. if that happens, roll percentile (1-25: right arm. 26-50: left arm. 51-75: right leg. 76-99: left leg. 100: head, instant death.)
level 3 - gets blown back 15 feet whether the attack hits or not

this stacks with damage from flying kick and leap attack if applied.

Athletes can be found all over the world. They live to improve their physical abilities and they take their bodies to the limit with strict training. Speed Athletes are constantly on the verge of hurting themselves because of their training..
Adventures: Athletes go to improve their physical abilities

So, in a sense it is an athlete with roughly the same damage progression as a monk (Why 1d20??), more speed than a monk, more AC than a monk and with bull rush and/or charge like qualities. On top of that, the Ref save is weird. What's wrong with an ordinary good ref-save that caps out at +12?

Some of the abilities are executed poorly. Your Too Quick ability for example bestows a ludicrous bonus to AC. Making a speedy character may be a lot of fun, but I suggest you really look into a way to reshape your class features. Furthermore, this looks more like a standard class, as prestige classes have maximally 10 (nonepic) levels

My advice to you is to check out special attacks, like charges or bull rush, and see if you can modify those rules, or use them to come up with better mechanics for this class and to retune it, because it seems to need a whole lot of work. And so do the prerequisites. It is not usual to demand a minimum ability score, let alone three; these tend to be reflected in certain Feats that have those prerequisites.

I recently looked at all of the battle moves that are in a battle in dungeons and dragons (after I made the class). The Bull Rush and Charge specifically seem to be good candidates to go off of for doing an ability, but I felt really limited on that standpoint. Maybe I'm just sleepy, but I can't think of too many things I can use to branch off of those two, and they are the only "quick moving" tactics that I know of.

Okay, feedback.

First off, you can't have your hit die say 'Same as normal.', you should pick a hit die that would represent how hardy this style of character would be. I'd say a d8.

Second, you have 14 class skills, two of which simply don't work. Racing can't really work as a perform skill. Perform is charisma based, and nobody races using charisma. They race using dexterity or strength, and the fact that you're improving speed in the class is good enough, so I'd cut that out. Knowledge (the body) can be covered by the heal skill. Try not to come up with new knowledge skills unless you have a class ability that uses them.

Third, Sulacu is right about the saves. There are only two progressions for saves, good or bad. Like, a fighter has good fort saves, but bad reflex and will saves. They always go up the same amount, that's just how it works in 3rd edition.

Fourth, in essence, you're giving the character taking this prestige class 9 feats. That's a whole lot of feats. Why in one level (level 5) they get two feats in the same level. Wow. Maybe you could think about cutting the amount of feats back a bit, even if just by two. Also, what exactly is meant by the 'Battle Speed' ability? Does that mean you get an extra attack at full BAB every round, like with the Haste spell? -> EDIT: Nevermind, read the last sentence, yes. Okay.

Ok. I have taken your advice about the hit die. I didn't think before that somebody just getting faster changes their hardiness, but I can see a good argument against my assumption too.

Comment about the saves - I apologize about that. I have to be honest and say that I had no idea about how the saves are normally set up. The typical numbers for the saves were (7/3/3). I didn't notice that this was the case. I will be altering those to suit the regular progressions.

to explain about the feats - this was a situation that I thought about considerably and decided that each feat was fit for this class. I put Spring Attack, Bounding Assault, and Rapid Blitz together because they feed off of each other, so in my mind, those three feats counted as 1 feature for the class (i apologize if that doesn't make any sense). I used this same process for Evasion, which brought up my count to 5, but I counted it as two special features of the speed athlete. The level 5 in particular is where I wanted to make the charge ability something to behold, because until this point, the speed athlete's charge still wasn't really anything special. Flying kick adds 1d12 damage to charge, and if you use power attack in a charge, then Leap Attack doubles the power attack damage. I put these two together in this level to say...."hey! my charge is now a feature!!!". The sprint feats more or less don't make the person as vulnerable during a charge. I would assume that they charge enough to be aware of attacks and not lose AC. The mobile sprinting I decided to just treat as a more advanced form of fleet of foot. Combat Reflexes felt to be a given for the Speed Athlete, and Battle Speed was suppose to be the ultimate form. It felt like it fit together well, but please tell me if that appears overpowered.

Instead of the haste from Battle Speed, which is something nearly everyone nearly everyone is going to have on all the time by 15th level anyway, why not modify the Flurry of Blows ability from Monk? Maybe something like this:

Blur of Strikes (Ex): At 2nd level and higher, when wearing light or no armor, a Speed Athlete may attack using a blur of strikes at the expense of accuracy. When doing so, he may make one extra attack in a round at her highest base attack bonus, but this attack takes a -2 penalty, as does each other attack made that round. When a Speed Athlete reaches 6th level, the penalty lessens to -1, and at 10th level it disappears. A Speed Athlete must use a full attack action to use a blur of strikes, and only with unarmed strikes or with light or finessable weapons.

That'd give them an extra attack that works with the Haste spell, and also with Two Weapon Fighting, which would work fine with this class.

About the feats; you could try Bonus feats, and have the selection of feats be limited to the feats you think work best with this class. That way people could build their own specialized Speed Athlete. So the Special list could look like this:

1 Bonus feat, Evasion
2 Blur of Strikes, +10 Speed
3 Bonus feat
4 Focused Sprint, +20 Speed
5 Bonus feat
6 Improved Evasion, +30 Speed
7 Bonus Feat
8 Mobile Sprinting, +40 Speed
9 Bonus Feat
10 Bonus Feat, +50 Speed

The bonus feats could be feats like: Combat Reflexes, Spring Attack, Flying Kick, Leap Attack, Bounding Assault, Rapid Blitz, Power Attack, Shock Trooper, Two Weapon Fighting, Improved Two Weapon Fighting, Improved Unarmed Strike

I like your version of it better.

One problem is the haste ability. I think you should make it a per encounter ability, aka: haste 1/encounter, etc. That way you can't just haste yourself every round, that's a bit powerful.

For the requirements: get rid of the base land speed requirement. I think you should also drop the athletic feat as prereq and put Endurance in its place.

Also, why is Heal a class skill? Doesn't seem to fit the flavor.

Otherwise, great idea. Maybe add in some sort of blur ability (as spell)? That sounds cool. Also, if you're gonna keep the haste ability (you should really change it to per encounter) you should start the progression earlier: 1/encounter at level 5, twice/encounter at level 10 (or something like that).

Cool idea.

Okay, feedback.

I believe athletes understand the concept of the human body. I put it as a knowledge and someone suggested to just put heal. So that's where that came from. Should I just toss it period?

Another thing - hahahaha you really have issues with Battle Speed huh? Please elaborate on your suggestion. Specifically, are you suggesting the haste be used like a spell once per encounter, or just one round of a hasted action once per encounter?

Want to explain the feat requirement suggestions? I'm not quite getting where you're coming from on that.

Thanks for feedback!

Okay. I didn't see where you were coming from with the Heal skill. Seems ok now.

For the feat requirements, Athletic gives a bonus on Climb and Swim checks, neither of which seem like focuses for this class. The Endurance feat seems to fit more because it represents physical training that pertains to running; "+4 on Constitution checks made to continue running." <--from the PHB, pg 93.

I think the hasted once per round idea sounded cool. That way you could get more uses per encounter without it being way overpowered. So start off at fifth level with Haste: Once per encounter you may act as though under the effects of the haste spell, this is a spell-like ability. It lasts for 1 round."

Then you could change either the per encounter part or the number of rounds it lasts as the class levels up.

This class looks great. It shows potential aswell. The only issue I don't understand is why the seaming mimic of a monk without the word "furry of blows" and the better BAB this class recieves. This class seems to be based on trying to strike fast, move fast and hit hard? Why not perk it up with some special abilities that allow more movement per round and give an attack/damage bonus for doing so ( sort of like the Scout ability) this seems to meet the Athletic Perspective.
Also, the requirement of base land speed of 50 is a bit rough. Thats forcing the character to be a monk or a take a race that would provide speed increases. Humans can be athletic too!! :D

Traverese has some good points towards the nature of the class, but like i said more spice.
WIUGamers

07-02-07, 01:03 PM
How about this?
Battle Speed - can naturally haste 1 round per constitution modifier in a day.

how's that? I'll give some consideration to the blur suggestion and for spicing things up :-). Don't have anything yet with those..

Helpful info.
Ways to reach this level as it is - Fighter (taking the feats) level 9-10. Monk (speed enhancement and feats) level 8 [i think]. Barbarian (+10 speed and feats) level 12. Any other class can do it, but it would take a much longer time considering that they don't have as many feats as a fighter and no speed bonuses.

Best way to get to this prestige class? Human Fighter.

Ideas - Focused Sprint: also adding on the ability to make full attack on charge?

treated as using blur spell during charge?

trample??

using a reflex save to negate attack (DC attack) as many times as ur dex modifier?

throw me more ideas guys. thats some that are in my head.

The Battle speed idea seems great, but whats the focus of the class? whats suppose to be the big achievment for reaching level 10? A great idea would be adding an almost Dimension Door supernatural ability at 10th lvl as a free action allowing the Speed Athlete to attack from all angles. It's really up to you to tell how long it will last and number of times per day.
the blur idea wasn't bad either. Having the Athlete able to blur as the spell....i cant remember but i know it allows only 50% of the chances to hit the Athlete, but the Athlete will have to moving like 20ft around to activate the ability.
some more ideas for you its seems to be coming along great, ill post back later.

I gave some thought to the ultimate ability of the speed athlete, and I think I came up with a great idea.

Sprint Collision - level 10 - the speed athlete is able to sacrifice all of their battle speed for one day to make a full speed charge at someone (they must have not used any battle speed so far that day). the conditions for damage are different with each type of attack. the speed athlete must be readied in order to be prepared to do this action. these are the special conditions.

level 2 - 90-150 ft. (note at this distance, the speed athlete will also be considered under a blur-like spell by natural effects:a 75% chance of miss:, this point is where the speed athlete is going the fastest)
level 3 - any distace over 150 ft.

damage unarmed (or base)
level 1 - 3d8 + str
level 2 - 9d8 + str
level 3 - 6d8 + str

bludgeon effect
level 1 - brutal strike effect
level 2 - stunned for 3 rounds & knocked prone 10 ft away
level 3 - knocked prone

piercing effect
level 1 - nothing different
level 2 - stab through body. takes additional 3 blood loss damage for every round not healed
level 3 - same as flay

slashing effect
level 1 - nothing different
level 2 - has a 50% chance to completely cut off a body part, the higher being completely cut off. if that happens, roll percentile (1-25: right arm. 26-50: left arm. 51-75: right leg. 76-99: left leg. 100: head, instant death.)
level 3 - gets blown back 15 feet whether the attack hits or not

this stacks with damage from flying kick and leap attack if applied.

I know this is very elaborate, but what do you guys think?
malak92

07-06-07, 10:47 AM
This idea seems pretty cool, it shows diversity from any other class, just whats this about differant levels? It seems to show if u are able to go faster u do more damage correct? and by lvl 10 would you be able to go max speed all the time?
great job though keep it up
WIUGamers

07-06-07, 08:28 PM
i will explain the levels from a runner's point of view

level 1 is acceleration, not reaching full speed
level 2 is considerably short, but it's the point where a person running would reach their top running speed
level 3 is slowing down

these are actual logistics of a sprinter in real life, so i applied them to the game. level 2 does most damage obviously, level 3 is going at a faster rate than level 1, so between the two, it does more damage.

if that just makes things confusing, let me know.
