Now, as for the reason that I even bothered to do this and post it here on the boards, I am curious as to how useful an standard caster would find the metamind's abilities. Magic's free scaling vs. psionics power points means that a magic user will get a lot more mileage out of the free casting class feature, and while font of power/magic is theroretically the same ability, it seems to me that an arcane caster would make better use of it (10 free PAO's!). Anyway, I really just want to see if a class that is widely regarded as being a waste of the paper its printed on for psionics might actually be horribly overpowering in the hands of a wizard. SPELLSLINGER Hit Die: d4. Requirements To qualify to become a spellslinger, a character must fulfill all the following criteria. Skills: Knowledge (arcana) or Knowledge (Religion) 4 ranks, Spellcraft 8 ranks. Feat: Magical Affinity. Casting: Caster level 4th. Class Skills The spellslinger’s class skills are Concentration (Con), Craft (any) (Int), Knowledge (Arcana), and Spellcraft (Int). Skill Points at Each Level: 2 + Int modifier. Table: The Spellslinger Level BAB Fort Ref Will Special Spells Known 1st +0 +0 +0 +2 Free casting 1st, 3/day — 2nd +1 +0 +0 +3 +1 level of existing casting class 3rd +1 +1 +1 +3 Free casting 2nd, 3/day — 4th +2 +1 +1 +4 +1 level of existing casting class 5th +2 +1 +1 +4 Free casting 3rd, 1/day — 6th +3 +2 +2 +5 +1 level of existing casting class 7th +3 +2 +2 +5 Free casting 4th, 1/day — 8th +4 +2 +2 +6 +1 level of existing casting class 9th +4 +3 +3 +6 Free casting 5th, 1/day — 10th +5 +3 +3 +7 Font of Magic +1 level of existing casting class Class Features All the following are class features of the spellslinger prestige class. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Spellslingers gain no proficiency with any weapon or armor. Spells Known: At every even-numbered level, a spellslinger gains additional spells per day and access to new spells as if he had also gained a level in whatever casting class he belonged to before he added the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (bonus feats, metamagic or item creation feats, and so on). This essentially means that he adds the level of spellslinger to the level of whatever casting class the character has, and then determines spells per day, spells known, and caster level accordingly. If a character had more than one casting class before he became a spellslinger, he must decide to which class he adds the new level of spellslinger for the purpose of determining spells per day, spells known, and caster level. Free Casting (Sp): At 1st level, a spellslinger can cast any 1st-level spell he knows (and has prepared, in the case of prepared casters) for free (without expending a spell slot) three times per day. At higher levels, a spellslinger gains the ability to freely cast additional higher-level spells: three 2nd-level spells per day at 3rd level; one 3rd-level spell per day at 5th level; one 4th-level spell per day at 7th level; and one 5th-level spell per day at 9th level. In the case of metamagic enhanced spells, use the spell’s effective spell level to determine if it may be cast with this ability. (For example, an empowered fireball takes up a 5th level spell slot, and may only be cast for free with your 1/day 5th level free casting) Font of Magic (Su): A 10th-level spellslinger can produce seemingly endless power once per day, for up to 1 minute. His eyes shine like tiny stars, and faint illumination seems to beam out of his mouth and the end of each of his fingers. While so empowered, he can cast any of his spells without expending any spell slots. He finds the power he needs welling up within his own body. |
