| Alyss05-23-07, 08:55 AM | Right, I'm not sure if this is any good, so I'd like an expert opinion: TWISTPOCKET_____________________________ ____ Twist Alice, a psychopathic member of the Razor Guild, is the creator and sole practitioner of this fighting art. The style’s signature is that it requires the fighter to keep their hands in their pockets throughout combat, until the last moment when a deadly attack leaves the twistpocket’s enemy a crumpled mess. Hit Dice: d6 REQUIREMENTS Skills: Bluff 8 ranks, Sense Motive 6 ranks. Feats: Combat Expertise, Improved Trip, Improved Unarmed Strike, Quick Draw Sneak Attack bonus: +1d6 Special: Must posses a large overcoat with a pocket at each hip. Each pocket must be fitted with a sheathe capable of carrying a small weapon, such as a dagger. Having a coat modified in this manner increases its cost by 15 gp. CLASS SKILLS The twistpocket’s class skills (and the key ability for each) are Balance (Dex), Bluff (Cha), Disguise (Cha), Escape Artist (Dex), Hide (Dex), Intimidate (Cha), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex), Open Lock (Dex), Sense Motive (Wis), Sleight of Hand (Dex), Spot (Wis), and Tumble (Dex). Skill points per level: 4 + Int modifier. CLASS FEATURES All of the following are class features of the twistpocket: Weapon and Armour proficiencies: Twistpockets are proficient with the dagger, punching dagger, kukri and triple dagger. They gain no proficiencies with armour or shields, and most of the twistpocket’s class features rely on her being unarmoured. Hands in pockets: A twistpocket’s combat style rests on her wearing her coat at all times, being unrestricted in her movements (must be carrying a light or no load and unarmoured), and having her hands in her pockets. Putting your hands in your pockets is a free action that doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity, as is taking them out. Sneak Attack (Ex): At first level a twistpocket gains a sneak attack, dealing an additional 1d6 damage whenever her target is caught flat-footed, or when her target is being flanked. The damage from this sneak attack stacks with any other sneak attack damage bonuses she has from other classes. At 3rd level and every other level thereafter the twistpocket’s sneak attack damage increases by 1d6, to a total of +5d6 at 9th level. This ability functions for all intents and purposes like the rogue ability of the same name. Twisted trip (Ex): When a twistpocket uses Improved Trip to trip an opponent and deliver an attack straight away, she may draw a weapon from her coat pocket in between tripping the opponent and delivering the attack, allowing her to switch between her unarmed strike and a weapon strike. She can only do this if her hands were in her pockets when she tripped her opponent. The twistpocket may only use this ability when she is unarmoured, carrying a light or no load, wearing her coat, and has her hands in her pockets. Handless strikes (Ex): While she has her hands in her pockets a twistpocket can attack foes with her knees, elbows and feet. If she takes the full attack action, none of her unarmed strikes count as an offhand strike, so she takes no penalty to her attack bonus and applies her full strength bonus to damage rolls. The twistpocket may only use this ability when she is unarmoured, carrying a light or no load, wearing her coat, and has her hands in her pockets. Instinctive defence (Ex): A 2nd level twistpocket adds her Wisdom modifier to her AC in addition to her Dexterity modifier. The bonus applies to her touch and flat-footed AC as well as her normal AC. She loses this bonus if she becomes immobilised or helpless, wears armour, carries a medium or heavy load, or if she doesn’t wear her coat or have her hands in her pockets. Uncanny feint (Ex): At 3rd level a twistpocket can use a Bluff check to feint in combat as a move action. At 6th level she can feint as a free action. The twistpocket may only use this ability when she is unarmoured, carrying a light or no load, wearing her coat, and has her hands in her pockets. Whirling coat (Ex): A twistpocket’s style of fighting allows her to use her coat as a shield, knocking aside sword thrusts and turning away cleaving axes. This ability gives a twistpocket a +1 bonus to her AC. At 8th level this increases to a +2 bonus. She loses this bonus if she wears armour, carries a medium or heavy load, or if she doesn’t wear her coat or have her hands in her pockets. Hole in the coat (Ex): By holding her arms close to her side and appearing rigid, a 4th level twistpocket and trick an enemy into missing with an attack: when the attack comes, she shifts her arm away from the appropriate side, creating a hole through which her opponent plunges his arm. From here the twistpocket can throw her attacker to the ground, creating a prime opportunity for a deadly sneak attack. This ability works largely like the Defensive Throw feat, allowing the twistpocket to make a trip attempt when her opponent misses with an attack of their own. Hole in the coat can be used after any missed attack, even during an opponent’s full attack. Each use of this ability counts against the twistpocket’s number of attacks of opportunity per round. Unlike the Defensive Throw feat, the twistpocket can use hole in the coat against any attack that misses her (provided the opponent is in a square she threatens). The twistpocket may only use this ability when she is unarmoured, carrying a light or no load, wearing her coat, and has her hands in her pockets. Speed bonus (Ex): At 5th level a twistpocket receives a +10 bonus to her speed. She loses this bonus if she wears armour, carries a medium or heavy load, or if she doesn’t wear her coat or have her hands in her pockets. Twist kill (Ex): If a 5th level twistpocket deals enough damage to a tripped opponent to reduce them to 0 hp, she may immediately deliver a coup de grace as an extra melee attack. To use this ability, the twistpocket must first trip an opponent and make a melee attack against them in the same turn while they are lying prone, as described in the Improved Trip feat entry of the Player’s Handbook. This attack may be a sneak attack. If the attack reduces the prone opponent to 0 hp or below, the twistpocket may immediately deliver a coup de grace. The coup de grace is an extra melee attack like a cleave attempt, and doesn’t count against the twistpocket’s normal number of attacks in a round. Neither does it provoke an attack of opportunity. A twistpocket must be unarmoured, wearing her coat and carrying a light or no load to use this ability. When she makes the trip attack she must also have her hands in her pockets, but can remove them to deliver attacks to her tripped opponent, as described above for the twisted trip ability. Vicious twist kill (Ex): At 10th level a twistpocket can use her twist kill ability to repeatedly attack a tripped opponent. After delivering a twist kill attack as described above, she may make an additional number of coup de graces. Each of these counts against the number attacks of opportunity she can make per round, though none of the attacks provoke attacks of opportunity from opponents. A twistpocket must be unarmoured, wearing her coat and carrying a light or no load to use this ability. When she makes the trip attack she must also have her hands in her pockets, but can remove them to deliver attacks to her tripped opponent, as described above for the twisted trip ability. | Alyss05-23-07, 09:04 AM | Apologies for the poor table formatting. How do you do tables properly on the forum? |
| Ryusage05-23-07, 05:12 PM | I really like the idea... gives a nice PrC for rogue/monks, which are fairly hard to come by. Good job! |
| neilthrun05-23-07, 07:31 PM | The handless strikes ability is redundant. You can already make unarmed strikes with any part of your body. Unless I'm missing something. |
| Ardent05-23-07, 08:16 PM | The style is based on Akito/Agito from Air Gear, right? If so, it's certainly interesting to watch. |
| Cala, Legend Reborn05-24-07, 03:56 AM | ...Akito/Agito didn't really need the use of his hands. Something about straightjackets not allowing hand movement, y'know. It's more like Takamichi from Mahou Sensei Negima to me. Technique was called "iaiken", if I recall correctly. Like "iaijutsu" except with fists. Interesting use of equipment as a prereq/class feature enabler. Class looks fairly neat overall. |
| Alyss05-24-07, 08:29 AM | I thought that, while you could, they were counted as off-hand strikes. Under the monk's unarmed strike class feature, it makes clear that a monk's unarmed strikes are never counted as off-hand. So I assumed that kicks and so on delivered by characters from other classes were counted as off-hand. No? |
| SnazzyPants06-06-07, 11:26 PM | You are semi-correct. Unless you have Improved Unarmed Strike, you provoke attacks of opportunity from armed opponents when you attack them unarmed. As well, without it, you cannot make attacks of opportunity against opponents, as you have no threatened space. Also, all attacks made while unarmed are nonlethal, unless you've taken Improved Unarmed Strike. Perhaps you could adjust the class feature into a modified version of Improved Unarmed Strike? |
| pmurray@bigpond.com06-08-07, 01:18 AM | * At 3rd level and other level thereafter the twistpocket’s sneak attack damage increases by 1d6, to a total of +5d6 at 9th level. Don't you mean "and every other level thereafter"? That's standard sneak attack progression. * A 2nd level twistpocket adds her Wisdom modifier to her AC Bleh. A rogue with a good wisdom score??? This is a monk PrC. * At 3rd level a twistpocket can use a Bluff check to feint in combat as a move action. At 6th level she can feint as a free action. You may want to incorporate the Invisible Blade errata. The feint becomes a free action, but you can only use it once per round. * A twistpocket’s style of fighting allows her to use her coat as a shield, knocking aside sword thrusts and turning away cleaving axes. I believe there is already a cloak defence PrC. Perhaps copy that. Making it a deflection bonus means it will not stack with rings of protection, which doesn't seem right. |
| Alyss06-11-07, 05:59 AM | Firstly, thanks for feedback so far. You are semi-correct. This wasn't quite what we were talking about. I asked if Improved Unarmed Strike let you count all your unarmed strikes as off-hand (see monk). * At 3rd level and other level thereafter the twistpocket’s sneak attack damage increases by 1d6, to a total of +5d6 at 9th level. Don't you mean "and every other level thereafter"? That's standard sneak attack progression. That is indeed what I meant, thanks for spotting it. I will ammend the typo now. * A 2nd level twistpocket adds her Wisdom modifier to her AC Bleh. A rogue with a good wisdom score??? This is a monk PrC. Twispockets are usually monk/rogues, as you have to have Imp Unarmed Strike and a SA of +1d6 or higher. I wanted to incorporates bits of each class here. The fact that the combat style is very tai-chi themed but also has a sneak attack clearly sticks the two together, as Ryusage noticed. * At 3rd level a twistpocket can use a Bluff check to feint in combat as a move action. At 6th level she can feint as a free action. You may want to incorporate the Invisible Blade errata. The feint becomes a free action, but you can only use it once per round. Not true. The class feature reads thus: At 5th level, the character can feint in combat as a free action It doesn't say anything about a limit on how often they can do it. I'll change this too so that the AC is non-tagged and stacks with stuff like thgat. Cheers Thans for all your comments:) |
| Dex06-12-07, 03:06 AM | All forms of attacking with the body (headbutts, knees, kicks) are counted as unarmed strikes. It depends what you're doing with them as to whether or not they count as on or off hand. I do not understand what they meant by "A monk’s attacks may be with either fist interchangeably or even from elbows, knees, and feet. This means that a monk may even make unarmed strikes with her hands full. There is no such thing as an off-hand attack for a monk striking unarmed." ...since there's nothing in the rules that say you have to be making punches. Also in FAQs and such they have stated that a monk can flurry with on-hand weapons and then make unarmed strikes as an off-hand attack. The only thing special about monks fighting unarmed is 1) More damage that increases by level. 2) Even with off-hand attacks, they add their full STR bonus to damage. |
| Alyss06-12-07, 06:39 AM | Cool. I'l leave it in anyway, keeps the rogue/monk flavour |
| Dark_Midget06-13-07, 04:24 AM | if I'm correct, to do the table thing you asked about, you put (code) in [ ] brackets and after the text, put (/code), once again in [ ] brackets. Like this |
