Hey guys,

The Dragon Magazine had a prestige class called "The Mighty Contender of Kord" a few years ago (like, 2003) and I'd like to create an updated version of the prestige class.

Here's my thoughts on prerequisites... not much here, except I added Martial Weapon Proficiency (Greatsword).

Alignment: Chaotic Good.
Patron Deity: Kord (or equivalent God of Wrestling/Strength)
Base Fortitude Save: +6.
Knowledge (religion): 9 ranks.
Feats: Power Attack, Improved Grapple, Martial Weapon Proficiency (Greatsword)
Spellcasting: Ability to cast divine spells of 3rd level.

Now, the Mighty Contender had some cool "wrestling" type abilities that gave it a lot of synergy with the Strength domain, but had only 1/2 spellcasting. I'd like to balance the "wrestling" and spellcasting a little more and give it a 8/10 spellcasting progression (no new spells gained at 1st and 6th level).

Here were my ideas for class abilities:

1st: Weapon Focus (Great Sword), class levels stack with Strength domain granted power
2nd: STR +1
3rd: Strength domain power lasts up to CON modifier
4th: Use Strength domain granted power once per 2 Mighty Contender levels
5th: Earth's Embrace feat
6th:
7th: Clever Wrestling feat
8th: STR +1
9th:
10th: Strength domain granted power adds DOUBLE character level to STR

What do you guys think?

make the domain earlyer.. as its bonus relly isnt that "good" at that high of a level and give them very minor buffs and stuff side spell list...

is kord the good brother or evil one?

I like the idea of the mighty contender very much, and too think that the original version needs a revision. Your take is a good start. 8/10 spellcasting is reasonable, otherwise nobody except NPCs would take levels in it (unless there is another divine caster in your group). You'd loose too much. The granted domain power is nice as is, DOUBLING the STR increase is over the top I think (it would mean +40 to STR at CLE10/MCoK10). How about +2 for every level of MCoK? Makes them better than "normal" clerics, but not too much.

I have two major concerns: 1) Your PrC is designed specifically for Clerics. I'd include Favored Souls of Kord into the equation; omitting WF: Greatsword from the list of bonus feats (maybe making it a prerequisite ?! and WS:Greatsword a bonus feat). 2) Grappling does not scale well with greatswords, so what about a nice Ex ability that allows MCoK to use a greatsword in grapple as if it was a light weapon (and maybe with no penalty at higher levels).

How about the MCoK qualifies for feats as though it wer a fighter of its MCoK levels -2?

I'm sorry to say, but that's a bit too much.

Perhaps a +1 bonus to Str per level of this PrC for the ability of the Str Domain

If you're throwing a 8/10 progression spellcasting as well, I'm going to start twitching from the hax.

I'd be surprised if the Contender of Kord simply doesn't pick up the BBEG and toss him a mile away.

I figured someone would say it was overpowered, but keep in mind it is a pretty expensive prestige class to get into. To enter it as a straight cleric, you basically need four feats (Improved Unarmed Strike, Improved Grapple, Power Attack, Greatsword Proficiency). So to enter it at 6th level either you need to be human and commit all your feats to that, or dip into levels of fighter.

Maybe the 10th level ability is too much (since it would basically mean a Cleric 6/Mighty Contender 10 would get a +32 enhancement bonus to STR for several rounds), so what other abilities would you suggest for the "capstone"?

Perhaps a +10 bonus when using that particular domain ability?

Or perhaps a permanent +2 str or such?
