| korcheck10-05-07, 07:47 PM | Hey all I realize that the valkyrie is a race but I am looking at doing a PrC for this. Basically A fighter (obviously female) is chosen by a god to find worthy warriors etc. etc. I'm not very good at creating PrC's (in fact I've never made one) so I was wondering if it might have been done by anyone. any help will be appreciated if there isn't one is there someplace I could go for directions on building a PrC. |
| The_Shaman10-05-07, 08:18 PM | I would probably start off with a Paladin/cavalier (or Windlord, from BoED) or ToB crusader and work from there, to be honest. What abilities are you looking for? I presume mounted combat is a must, but what else? |
| korcheck10-05-07, 08:52 PM | the original valkyrie were not always shown as riders but rather they flew in a number of different manners (in chariots, on wolves or boars and some with raven wings) so riding isn't an absolute but may be nice. I agree with the thought of a pally or perhaps a cleric since the primary thing they did was to usher the souls of fallen warriors (those found worthy) into valhalla, but as to how this would be accomplished by a mere human I know not. I think spells or spell-like abilities would have to be a part of the class to accomplish this in some way. In the legends there is little difference between the valkyries and the norns ( a sort of supernatural or minor diety fate witch like the three sisters of greek legend) because valkyries were said to decide the fate of the warriors as they battled so perhaps the abilities of the PrC could incorperate something of this nature into it. |
| The_Shaman10-06-07, 03:30 AM | Well, a lvl 14 or so "mere human" with a good dash of divine powers can accomplish a great many things :) . Paladins can be better if you want a good mount - and mount chargers are among the melee characters that can get decent damage, at least sometimes - but clerics have more powerful abilities at their disposal. Speaking of clerics, what about favored souls from CDivine? The ToB crusader is good if you want to focus on melee. In that aspect, it is supposedly much better than the paladin. |
| 1 ton ghost10-07-07, 02:08 PM | um, aren't they divine outsiders already? not to step on your toes or anything but i thought it was supposed to be more spiritual than martial, as in character class. |
| korcheck10-08-07, 01:59 PM | um, aren't they divine outsiders already? not to step on your toes or anything but i thought it was supposed to be more spiritual than martial, as in character class. I'm not sure what you're asking about. please explain what your asking about, the valyries, favored souls, or what. |
| The_Shaman10-08-07, 06:16 PM | I presume he meant favored souls... Those are about as martial as clerics, which means that they get some training in doing their deity's will the hard way. Of course, for a more combat-oriented character, multiclassing or prestige-classing them is an option. As for races, for me it makes more sense for outsiders to be favored souls than clerics. They are practically composed of divine energies, so they are just - if not more adept of channeling those in the more intuitive way of the favored soul than the more ritualized one of the cleric. A favored soul/fist of raziel valkyrie might not be the closest to the original concept that you can get (though my knowledge of Viking mythology is quite poor, it may well be exactly what you want) but she will be an awe-inspiring warrior and force to be reckoned with with her magic. |
| Elinold_Fyonex10-08-07, 07:25 PM | From what I've read and seen of valkyries, they don't really use magic, and traditional lore states that they are usually of mortal blood. They are divine in that they took part in sacrificial rituals and chose who went to fight in ragnarok...I dunno, I'd probably base it off of a female melee type with leadership abilities(as they were presented in groups, with only the leader named) and superior abilities using swords and lances, maybe some ability that let them sweep around with a lance and stuff? |
| The_Shaman10-08-07, 07:33 PM | Magic can take many forms: not all involve books or obscure rituals. Blessings of the deities, such as tremendous strength, healing wounds, or finding a weakness in the enemy can come in subtle forms, but be there nonetheless. If that does not sound good enough and you want to have them as are warriors, I think the Crusader BC is perhaps the best choice, followed by paladin, knight, soulborn, etc. |
| korcheck10-08-07, 09:02 PM | hold on a second What I'm looking for is a PrC that revolves around the valkyrie theme not a class or a PrC for a race of valkyries. I have no ability to create a PrC and was hoping to get some help on that. Sorry if I was unclear before on what was need guys. |
| Rinian210-09-07, 03:38 AM | You mean like a Dragon Disciple becomes a half-dragon? That's a pretty cool idea. I'll get back to you with some ideas later. My first thoughts are a class that needs a fairly high BAB and will work their way to gaining the Winged template (from the Savage Species I think). |

YES that's what I mean, if nothing else maybe I could attempt to adapt that class somehow.:D |

So it involves some fighting, but should it come with particular weapon prowess, divine casting, special abilities of any kind? Also, if it's a PrC, what base class would you prefer to lead to it? |

I think perhaps if there were a particular weapon or combination I would say a long sword and shield might fit. I also would think the concept of a gradual change to a form of celestial being, like a half celestial (though not that template exactly) would be good. I see the class base as being a fighter more than a pally due to the death aspect of a valkyrie (since they chose who would die in battle and be sent to valhalla) though a pally may work as well there or a higher level cleric, not sure. I think the class probably wouldn't have spells so other things would have to take the place of losing them if it were related to clerics, maybe spell like abilities? |
| Aleolus10-10-07, 02:56 PM | Actually, according to Deities and Demigods, all the Valkyries are are human female Paladins with the Einherjar template, and Celestial Pegasi for their mounts. The Einherjar template gives a Divine Rank 0, changes type to Outsider with the Good subtype, +30 feet base land speed, and Divine qualities as follows. Immunity to transmutation, energy drain, ability drain, ability damage, mind affecting effects Damage reduction 10/Epic Fire resistance 5 Spell resistance 32 Immortal |

| The_Shaman10-10-07, 05:53 PM | Those exact stats? Off the top of my head, not before epic. DR/epic is a sure sign that you're into epic territory, and SR of 30+ and immortality are pretty heavy deals as well. As for turning into an outsider, most PrCs or basic classes that give that tend to have divine casting - divine disciple, divine crusader - notice a theme here ;) ?.. If you're not really that bothered by that, paladin or favored soul are both good. If you don't want any divine casting, hmmm... I think you should get a template, say half-celestial (yes, it's +4), possibly using monstrous progression - should be in the webarticles somewhere - to get the abilities and LA little by little. As for paladins not fitting because of the death theme, that's a moot point: as long as a deity is compatible with a variant of the paladin code and alignment, it can sponsor paladins. I've heard that CChampion has okay non-casting paladins, so if ToB is not mystical enough, I would recommend that you check that or maybe the MoI Soulborn. Oh, CWarrior has non-casting paladins as well, but they are a complete joke and a waste of your time. If you want to become HC little by little, the two articles have the monster progression from human to aasimar and aasimar to half-celestial: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040213a and http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040319a |
| Aleolus10-12-07, 02:51 AM | OK, here's what I've come up with. Valkyrie Prerequisites: BAB +17 Knowledge: Religion 15 ranks Smite Evil class feature Ability to summon a special mount Ability to Turn Undead Lawful Good alignment Must be female Must be called into the class by your Patron Deity Class features: Full BAB All good saves 2+int skill points Smite Evil: At every Valkyrie level, you gain one additional use of your Smite Evil class feature. Special Mount: At first level, your Special mount is dismissed, and your deity grants you a Pegasus with the Celestial template as your new steed. Expanded Smite: Beginning at second level, your Smite Evil class ability is expanded to include others who do not share the views of your alignement. You gain the ability to Smite a creature of any alignment except Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral and Neutral Good. Ascendend Body: At third level, you have achieved your goal of becoming a Valkyrie. You acquire the Einherjar template, gaining a Divine Rank of 0, immunity to transmutation, mind-affecting effects, energy drain, ability drain, and ability damage. You also gain DR 10/epic, Spell Resistance 32, Fire Resistance 5, and immortality. You become an Outsider, native to the plane of your Patron Deity, with the Good subtype. |
| Aleolus10-15-07, 05:21 PM | No comments on the PrC I wrote up? |
| korcheck10-17-07, 01:45 PM | it seems a bit high in the requirements portion of it i.e. a bab of 17 so this would mean you couldn't take it until much later most seem to set the character at or around 10th lvl at the most so this seems more in line to an epic PrC. overall though it isn't bad. |
| Aleolus10-17-07, 01:53 PM | Well, considering what someone said about Einherjar benefits being Epic level, I thought it appropriate. |
