| Werebat troll paladin03-27-07, 09:09 AM | I'm crafting NPC's for an upcomming night and, though the question doesn't apply to this particular character, it does apply to a potential character from a player's standpoint. The Walker In the Wastes rewards a player who has reached 10th level in the class with the "Dry Lich" Template. However it never stipulates whether the LA is then a non-issue or not. Presumably, it's still a problem. I draw this from the fact that the template does in fact list an LA and walker in the Wastes is the only apparant way to reach the template, in addition the fact that I cannot think of a single example of a template being applied w/o the LA. If this is in fact the case, the character in question must take all 10 levels of the class before he can then start taking racial levels in Dry Lich. Now I don't recall the prerequisits for the class, but given the way the math works out, I assume that they can be met at 5 (such that someone can exactly finish the template before 20). Question 1: If this was the intention, and dry lich must be taken in this fashion, why was the template not figured into the class or, at least, broken into racial levels? Question 2: Has there been any reivision and/or clarification as to how the LA is applied (or not applied)? Question 3: Anyone remember the req's off the top of their head? EDIT: I just realized that half-dragon doesn't apply the LA when you get it from dragon disciple. That's an exception to my no templates w/o LA statement. |
| Echo_that_Pains03-27-07, 09:26 AM | It has always been assumed that it is a free template via the class. Some people add homebrew rules that give it an LA if you feel it is neccessary. There are 3 classes that come to mind that do not require LA for the template (I am sure there are more that I can't remember) Dread Necromancer (Lich at 20th level) WitW (Dry Lich at 10th level) DD (1/2 Dragon at 10th(?) level) It is considered a class feature and is not added to ECL. |
| obrysii03-27-07, 09:26 AM | I have to say that you do not get the LA. The Dragon Disciple and the Dread Necromancer both obtain a fairly high LA template "for free". |

| Werebat troll paladin03-30-07, 04:35 PM | Out of curiosity, does anyone have an idea of what the author intened to do about those jars? The way they're written, it implies you sort of have a demi-lich type thing (having many phylactories). The really curious thing is, with a lich, you destroy the phylactory and he can build another. With the jars (or more importantly, their contents) it doesn't seem quite as easy to replace. Any ideas? |
| smeagol_lied03-30-07, 04:48 PM | As long as at least 1 of your jars is left, you can't be destroyed. That's why you can't replace them. That's the way i saw it, anyway... |
| Barloch04-01-07, 12:04 AM | Yeah the LA from templates applied via prestige classes is ignored. As for the jars, I think you could replace the jars just fine, replacing the organs though is a diffrent story. But as an upside you don't ever have to keep the jars anywhere even near you so you can hide them in nearly impossible to find places or somewhere they're very unlikely to get destroyed. I mean you could, in theory, leave one in a antique shop and magically seal it, and the jar has a ton of hp/hardness so a simple fall won't destroy it and its not to likely someone in an antique shop would hit it with an adamantine hammer. You could throw one into a dragons hoard, it'd be pretty well guarded there. But one somewhere safe on the negative energy plane because no living creature can enter it without some serious magic protection. Keep one with you so you always know where at least one is, hell if you can cast that spell that makes a magical chest on the astral plane that you can call put it in there, then its nearly 100 percent safe. |
| The_Shaman04-01-07, 06:40 AM | Basically it's best to hide them... At least you have, essentially, 5 items rather than 1 (phylactery) to hide. I'm thinking shaping stone and burying them (preferably with permanenced magic aura) would probably work. |
