| Necroramo10-05-07, 06:42 PM | When a Walker in the Waste becomes a Dry Lich at level 10, does his level suddenly jump up because of the template's level adjustment? |
| The_Shaman10-05-07, 07:06 PM | No. Templates acquired through PrC levels do not carry extra LA. I believe this was adjudicated using the Dragon Disciple as a precedent, but it applies here as well. |
| General_Ridley10-06-07, 12:28 AM | And while Walker in the Waste is the only way to become a Dry Lich, the LA listed for the template is probably there so that DMs who choose to use Dry Lich without tying it to the PrC can have an idea of what it would be. |
| war_thog10-08-07, 05:03 AM | Which then leads to the point that Walkers in the Waste get a hell of a lot of power. They don't progress towards dry lich like Dragon Disciple. They get all this other awesome random ****. Then BAM! Dry Lich bonuses as well. Seems a bit on the "needs-to-be-nerfed" side of life. |
| Khatoblepas10-08-07, 06:26 AM | Um, the class features of a Walker in the Waste is exactly what the Dry Lich bonuses are. They gain the template over ten levels. Practically the only thing it gets at 10th is the stat bonuses and Unholy Toughness. It also adheres to +1LA ==2 HD. And Dragon Disciple is weak as heck :P |
| war_thog10-08-07, 07:22 AM | *looks at Sandstorm again* Are you off your nut? Alright Im going to look at this as a comparison. Stuff that walkers in the waste and dry liches dont have in common --- *this is all the PrC powers except lich transoformation at 10. Dry Lich gets Stats Immunities from being undead Immune to mind effecting things and other stuff More AC Damage reduction Fast healing Unholy toughness Water weakness Constitution drain Aura of Despair Stuff that the lich and walker do have in common -- Some AC *not all* Dessicating touch Immune to heat dangers Stuff that the walker gets that isnt relevant to dry lich. 8/10 Casting progression. The wasting. Local drought - then the better version. Pillar of Salt. Create Sand Golem Create Sand Mummy So no, the walker in the waste class features are nothing like the Dry Lich bonuses. The example dry lich in the book is a walker in the waste so this can lead to some confusion. However the abilities from the template and those from the PrC are very seperate things as the PrC only gets those template abilities at lvl 10. The rest are gained slowly. Has nothing in common with the other progress to template classes. Dragon Disciple gets stats and powers of template slowly. Dread Necro gets Lich related stuff. Fiend Blooded works towards the half fiend template slowly with stats and resistances. Each PrC has a little bit of other stuff that isnt related, but their main focus is that they are gaining the power of the Template. As noted above, Walker and Dry Lich dont follow this trend. Instead we get massive free **** at lvl 10. |

Loooong and rambly: But you can't gain the template without the 10 levels in the prestige class. If you think about the template + random stuff adding up to the +5LA it makes a lot more sense. Besides which, it's not actually much. (Pillar of Salt is pretty useless since you can already cast the spell at a higher caster level, Sand Golems cost money and Salt Mummies, I think, you can only have one of at a time (Ask CustServ again?). And Drought is.... what? Turns temperate climates into hot summer days? It only really becomes useful in a desert, where you're more likely to want to surpress it in favor of your party members not being roasted. And a once per day disease, woo.) The Dragon Disciple's gains are similar (but gains stat boosts because there really isn't much to the template), and it too gains extra stuff over the template (Wings and extra spells per day, if I'm correct in my thinking), and so do Dread Necromancers (they gain 9th level spells and full Rebuke Undead progression, as well as increased Undead control limits), so you gotta realise that prestige classes that give templates must give extras so that the levels aren't completely wasted (for example, it's better to be a half-dragon than be a dragon disciple, because the LA for half-dragon is +3, totally not worth being spread out over 10 levels). If you want to totally gimp the Dry Lich, go ahead and give them the LA on top of the levels they spent getting the template. That's 15 effective levels for a template, you know. But RAW? 2 caster levels and 10 levels in total are plenty enough to pay for the package. You're getting less caster-focused stat boosts than a regular lich, and being incredibly weak against water is kinda bad. |
| The_Shaman10-08-07, 01:31 PM | It's a powerful PrC despite the lost caster levels. There aren't that many of those. So? |
| robomatic2000002-25-08, 10:27 PM | Loooong and rambly: But RAW? 2 caster levels and 10 levels in total are plenty enough to pay for the package. The two caster levels is bad, sure, but this is mitigated by the fact that you no longer die. Not to mention that the stat boosts you get are caster oriented, since you have to be a divine caster, wisdom is your casting stat (most likely). And the Cha bonus is gravy, since Unholy toughness means it'll net you 1 hp/HD. On top of that, water only acts as holy water. you aren't "incredibly weak". Water will only do 2d4 damage a round. This is mitigated by, what? Oh yeah. You don't die. Seriously wear a oilskin suit or something if its such a big deal. Walker in the Wastes/Dry Liches are AMAZING. |
| StruckingFuggle02-25-08, 11:42 PM | Considering every time I play an Arcane Necromancer, I wish I could take this; and I wish to heck and back there was a way (without some cheese, and outside of gestalt) to snag this class as a Dread Necromancer (winnnnnnn) ... yeeeaaah, it's good, yeah yeah yeah - it's not bad, no no no. But I don't think it needs to be fixed. It just rocks. Also, class features that make you gain LA, let alone anything that's >1? BAD AND STUPID AND MADE OF FAIL. |
| bnj177602-26-08, 07:59 PM | Pre-req for Walker of the Waste: Non-good (evil alignment) Feat Heat Endurance Able to cast 3 spells from thirst or sand domains as divine spells. In FR setting w/Sandstorm, as a follower of Set, a cleric is able to cast Black sand & Waste Strider from Sand Domain, plus 2nd level cleric spells allow for casting Desiccate. So you can take this Prc at 4th after 3 levels of cleric with the sand domain???? |
