It is said that the Wave Serpent clan was once the Fire Raven clan who served the Daimyo Watanabe Hotaka. This Daimyo also held relations with foreign privateers and between the two he was capable of severely inpact the power bases of his rivals through the use of assassinations and pirating. The Daimyo used the fear of his ninja and the wealth gained from the raided ships to increase his standings, soon rising so high as to gain the notice of the Emperor himself the Daimyo was soon made Shogun. The downfall of the clan came when the Daimyo let his greed go to far as he set his sights on the Emperor's throne. Hatching a plan to kill the Emperor the Daimyo turned Shogun sent out his ninja aboard the privateer vessels to attack the Emperor as he returned to port. The Daimyo gathered his personal forced though and lay in wait for the attack. His plan was to intervene as a show of protecting the Emperor figuring that when the Emperor was killed he could not be accused of inaction, but if his assassins failed he would be a hero for saving the Emperor. It came to pass that, through the actions of a young Samurai named Fukushima Isao, that the Emperor survived and the ninja and foreign privateers were forced to flee. While in hiding the assassins learned that the Shogun was to have the all arrested and executed without trial. Knowing that they would have no way of proving the Shogun's involvement they all took to the foreigner's vessels and fled into the expanses of the great oceans. The clan elders and the captain of the foreign privateers agreed to continue their alliance and sought to bring the truth of what had transpired to light. As the years passed the clan shared their art with the privateers and the privateers shared their knowledges of their trade and the Wave Serpent clan came into being. It further increases by +1d6 at 6th level and again at 9th level (for a total of +3d6). Acrobatic Charge (Ex): At 4th level a Wave Serpent Shinobi can charge over difficult terrain that normally slows movement or through the squares occupied by allies blocking their path. Depending on the circumstances a Wave Serpent Shinobi might still need to make appropriate checks to move over the terrain. The Wave Serpent Shinobi must take the results of this new roll. The Wave Serpent Shinobi gains one additional use of this ability at 8th level. Boarding Bravado (Su): At 7th level when the Wave Serpent Shinobi uses the charge action they gain a bonus to attack equal to half their class level and a bonus to damage equal their class level. These bonuses replace the normal bonuses for charging. Further more, any ally within 30’ of the Wave Serpent Shinobi gains a +2 to attack and damage for the remainder of the round. Wave Master (Ex): At 10th level the Wave Serpent Shinobi is now entrusted with the greatest gift (and the responsibilities that come with it) that the Wave Serpent Clan can bestow. The clan grants the Wave Serpent Shinobi the title of Wave Master and a sailing ship, a crew of 20, and a first mate. The crew are all fighter 2/ninja 2 of various races (to be chosen by the player, though 50% of the crew must either be human, elven, or half-elven) and will not stray far from the ship (ie, they will not accompany the Wave Serpent Shinobi on land-based missions). The first mate is half the level of the Wave Serpent Shinobi and will also not travel far from the ship (as noted for the crew above). If the Wave Serpent Shinobi has the Leadership feat they add the crew to their total amount of followers and their first mate replaces their cohort (if any). If the Wave Serpent Shinobi has enough followers to crew it (minimum 200) they may trade in their sailing ship and pay 15,000 GP to gain a Galley. Replacing a lost ship costs the Wave Serpent Shinobi 55% of the listed value plus 10% for every additional replacement after the first. In return for this the Clan will call upon the Wave Serpent Shinobi to perform services. The Wave Serpent Shinobi must perform these duties if capable. Refusal to perform the duties expected of them three or more times will cause the Wave Serpent Shinobi to be called back to the clan to answer for this disobedience. Failure to answer this call will result in the clan sending a retrieval team to bring the Wave Serpent Shinobi in or execute him if need be. |
