Where to go after Wild Mage [Archive] - Wizards Community

I entered Wild Mage from sorcerer, mostly because it gave me exactly what the sorcerer class did (spell progression) with some added perks. I'm shopping around for where to go after I reach the end of the Wild Mage's road.

I can always go back into sorcerer, but that's rather, well, uneventful. I liked the Ultimate Magus, but I'd have to burn three levels to pick up wizard spells (as opposed to having gone wizard and only needing to burn two in sorcerer). Dragonheart Mage from Races of Dragon looks interesting too especially since I had initially intended to take Draconic feats prior to seeing the class. The Fatespinner is interesting too (well, the first four levels anyways.)

I've just about given up on finding any PrCs that synergize with anything that the Wild Mage class gives me, so I'm open to suggestions. Anyone have a particular class they can suggest? (:

Actually if you don't mind being really silly about it, all you need to qualify for Ultimate Magus is the Arcane Preperation feat. Then you can cast both spontanious and prepared spells, and viola. (granted you don't gain double caster levels every level, so you do sort of loose out on the benifits of the PRC)

Why not Fatespinner? Similarly to Wild Mage you get to fiddle with "stuff" like adding or subtracting from peoples to hit rolls and saving throws. So it can easily fit into theme for the character.

Or you could always go for the "old stand by" PRCs for mages of Arch mage or Loremaster (if you qualify). I personally love the Loremaster class.

Loremaster is nice, but it can be hard for sorcerers to qualify. Fatespinner synergizes to some degree (i.e. fudging the rolls of fate), but ultimately I think your character's background and needs should determine the PrC. What feats does the character have?

Most of my feats were burned getting into wild mage - Empower Spell, Magical Aptitude...I grabbed Practiced Spellcaster too, I figured it was worth burning a feat to negate the only real disadvantage Wild Mage offered.

The only other feat I've actually been able to "pick" was Draconic Heritage. Mostly because it fit with my character's nature, and partly because I thought the idea of the Breath attack would be pretty sweet.

That's why I'm looking at the Dragonheart Mage, even with the 8/10 (I hate losing spells, especially at the first level of it). But I'm having trouble deciding if burning spell slots for damage is going to be effective. Granted, I'll have more than a few, but I can probably put 'em to better use.

I like the idea of the Dragon Familiar feat, if only to say I have a dragon familiar (I'm playing up the "Draconic Heritage" lore of sorcerers), but I've grown attached to my monkey. Even gave him clothes.

My character's chaotic good, and I can't really emphasize either enough. I picked copper dragons for my heritage feat, I build a largely decentralized thieves guild that works primarily on passing information and watching out for each other (after all, I am a wild mage, wouldn't make much sense to have a structure to it), and I give a dividend of my earnings to the impoverished. Ironically, my brother (real life, not in game) is the baron of the city I setup in (DM let him roll for nobility, he got lucky).

I also joined a traveling band of adventurers with a couple other party members. We go around handling the "less-than-epic" tasks that our regular group doesn't deal with. We don't fly under any flag, just do our stuff.

Fatespinner works well with my character background, since I'm all about cheating it. My character heard stories of the Deck of Many things, and keeps his ears open for any hints about finding one. Likewise the Dragonheart Mage goes well with playing up to the draconic side of my character. Ultimate Magus I'm reluctant to go for, since my character gives "book-learnin" mages a hard time. I wrote up his backstory that he ended up being enrolled in one, until he broke some rules by lighting more than a few baddies on fire in a crowded street before breaking into the armory and making off with some loot (my reasoning for where he got his "starting gold" and items).

Well, in that case dragonheart mage and fatespinner look good on you, especially since I can imagine you wreaking hell in any gambling den with a bit of profession (gambling) and crazy bluff and charisma rolls.

With Iron will, you can get a taste of the (in)famous Incantatrix, but you're too late to get the top ability anyway, so it might be a case of getting a few more metamagic feats. With other prerequisites, Harper Mage could be just your thing, but the Alertness addiction of all harper races (and Education, ugh) is makes the class a weird one for any sorcerer. Unless, that is, you house-rule that having a familiar always gives you addiction, not just when it's close.

If you've picked up Practiced Spellcaster going into an 8/10 spellcasting PrC will not cost you any caster levels although it does reduce your spells.

If you are looking for thematic then Fatespinner may be the only way to go.
