| Deekin02-28-08, 03:13 PM | Here is a sample sheet. (http://ddxp.tumblr.com/page/1) Look at the powers, Particualry: Eyebite * Warlock (Fey) Attack 1 You glare at your enemy, and your eyes briefly gleam with brilliant colors. Your foe reels under your mental assault, and you vanish from his sight. At-Will * Arcane, Charm, Implement, Psychic Standard Action Ranged 10 Target: One Creature Attack: +4 vs. Will Hit: 1d6 + 4 psychic damage, and you are invisible to your target until the start of your next turn. Curse of the Dark Dream* Warlock (Fey) Attack 1 [flavor text] Daily * Arcane, Charm, Implement, Psychic Standard Action Ranged 10 Target: One Creature Attack: +4 vs. Will Hit: 3d8 + 4 psychic damage, and you slide the target 3 squares. Sustain Minor: You slide the target 1 square, whether you [fail or save???] (save ends). |
| Tempest Stormwind02-28-08, 03:18 PM | Where's the source on this? Note that we know that Psychic is a damage type in 4e. (We've known since the miniatures rules were released.) Now, we see psychic as a descriptor -- perhaps substituting for "Mind-affecting". I'm more interested in the (Fey) descriptor/subschool/whatever, myself. That's something totally new. |

See the Link at the top of the post, for the sample warlock sheet. Also good news- From Here, at the end (http://www.critical-hits.com/2008/02/28/dd-xp-seminar/) Q: How compatible are PHB2 classes with Martial Powers? A: PHBs will be full of powers and feats for new classes. There might be some abilities for old books. New classes for existing power sources, as well as new power sources. Psionics before too long. |
| starkreality02-28-08, 04:05 PM | The (Fey) part is easy- The warlock chooses pacts, and two of the available pacts for power are the Fey pact and the Infernal pact; your abilities are dependent upon your chosen pact. See the Tiefling and Gnome cartoon on the D&D main page. :D |
| CrimsonDeath02-28-08, 04:18 PM | See the Tiefling and Gnome cartoon on the D&D main page. :D Or don't. You'll save some brain cells. |
| Shadowfrost6802-28-08, 04:18 PM | Curse of the Dark Demon * Warlock (Fey) Attack 1 [flavor text] Daily * Arcane, Charm, Implement, Psychic Standard Action Ranged 10 Target: One Creature Attack: +4 vs. Will Hit: 3d8 + 4 psychic damage, and you slide the target 3 squares. Sustain Minor: You slide the target 1 square, whether you [fail or save???] (save ends). Its Curse of the Dark Dream by the way, not demon. *edit* Its also brilliant colors, by the way |
| celestialkin02-28-08, 05:47 PM | Forgive me, I am a bit confused here. Is "Psychic" just the new term for Mid-Affecting, or is Psionics going back to the old days when it was just something characters can/might have (I believe you rolled % or something). If it is the prior, I am disappointed. Seems like more selling out to the mmo/anime/etc crowd. |

If it is the prior, I am disappointed. Seems like more selling out to the mmo/anime/etc crowd. Psychic is confirmed as a damage type, probably akin to Mind Thrust. It is also, apparently, a descriptor for a type of attack (and in this function, it likely serves the same purpose as the Mind-Affecting descriptor). Note that 4e powers have several such descriptors; the ones seen here include "Arcane, Charm, Implement, Psychic" for instance. This probably means that it's from the Arcane power source, it's a Charm effect, it requires / benefits from an implement (defined earlier as wands, staves, orbs, and so on, which apparently serve the same function for spellcasters as magic swords do for warriors, suggesting that we might see +3 orbs that add +3 to the attack and damage rolls required for this effect -- note that both are listed as '+4 Vs Will'), and that it's a Psychic effect (probably meaning mindless creatures have nothing to fear from it). However, it also deals psychic damage -- which is nifty, since we now have a formal damage type for effects like this. From what we have seen, Psionic is going to be a power source, akin to "Arcane" above, and will show up in an upcoming PHB. Just as we have Martial Defenders (fighters), Martial Strikers (rogues, possibly rangers), Martial Leaders (warlord), and so on alongside Arcane Strikers (warlock) and Arcane Controllers (wizard), we'll likely have Psionic Defenders (egoists, psychic warriors?), Psionic Strikers (wilders, soulknives, lurks?), Psionic Leaders (telepaths, seers, ardents?), Psionic Controllers (shapers, nomads, kineticists?) and so on, each with their own assortment of powers. (Also, the devs have said that several things -- notably enchantment/telepathy, but also potentially illusions and telekinesis -- have been pulled from the wizard and added to the psion!) So, in brief, "Psychic" refers to a part of the base mechanics similar to "mind-affecting", but this has no impact on "Psionic" insofar as mechanics are concerned. We'll have to wait and see to know for sure how psionics will turn out, but it's safe to say it'll be closer to 3.5 than 2e. I'm cautiously optimistic, but as always, I'll wait until I have the book in hand before I pass any judgement either way. No need to rush to conclusions on *either* side. |
| Deekin02-28-08, 07:41 PM | Yeah Apperrently psionics has high priority for getting in a book- Question: What power sources can we look forward to in PHB2? Answer: Andy Collins was hesitant to promise any because they have just started designing the book. There is an aggressive plan for how much to fit in the book and he’s not sure that all of it is feasible. The two power sources that are highest on the list are Psionic and Primal, but he doesn’t know if it will all make it in. Apparently, they were not able to fit all of the Divine and Arcane information into the first PHB, so the subsequent information will also need space in the second book This is from this (http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=220109) EN world interview. |

Those classifications (I believe they are the "roles" I have read mentioned) remind me of putting together a 40K army for some reason. I am already not liking the new psionics, and since that was the major thing I was going to base my purchase of 4.0 on (aside from the money issue) I hope the future psionics ends up surprising me. So long old friend. I really did love psionics in this game. :( |
| Jaid02-28-08, 08:27 PM | psychic could also be like the [fire] in fireball, for that matter. ie, it might not mean mind-affecting so much as it is simply a descriptor for what kind of damage the ability does. |

So long old friend. I really did love psionics in this game. :( Dude. No one has seen 'the new psionics'. They are still being developed. I thought I made it clear: I was speculating. Let's not mince words: This is a knee-jerk reaction. The "roles" are Defender, Leader, Striker, and Controller. These map somewhat onto the old Fighter/Priest/Thief/Mage party. Just as you could, say, replace Fighter with Paladin and keep the same "role", now it's the same but with formalized names. (Mind you, this is one part of 4e that I do not like (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=15216884&postcount=67) -- but I'm waiting until I hold the books in my hand to judge.) |
| AntiDjinn02-29-08, 12:36 AM | If "psychic" is confirmed as a damage type, one that is available to the Warlock and presumably other classes, then what about the endless parade of people who used to show up here to rant about how psionics has no place in a fantasy setting? Will they have to eschew the Warlock (or at least this ability) to maintain their stance that the vocabulary doesn't fit? Or use it once it is core and finally shut up about psionic effects not fitting in their vision of the only true way to do fantasy? Or just skip 4E because a psionic word made it into core and never again trouble the WotC boards? Or perhaps, hypocritically, use such effects when they belong to core classes and still show up to complain about them when the 4E psionics rules are released? |

Do not associate the term ''psychic damage'' and psionics too fast. It just means effets that damage your mind.(For example, I'd see Phantasmal Killer deal psychic damage.) |
| InkBlot02-29-08, 12:46 PM | Nice cognitive dissonance there, Guyr. hmmm... cognitive dissonance ... psion/wilder 1 ... what would it do? Let you reroll a will save? Let retain some small measure of self-control even when under the affect of a compulsion? Protect you from alignment shifts? |
| GuyrtheadamantineOne02-29-08, 01:39 PM | Nice cognitive dissonance there, Guyr. What do you mean? If its that I voluntarily deny reality, then I'll just explain. I got over a part of the text. You glare at your enemy, and your eyes briefly gleam with brilliant colors. Your foe reels under your mental assault, and you vanish from his sight. Yeah, it sound psionic. A lot. hmmm... cognitive dissonance ... psion/wilder 1 ... what would it do? Let you reroll a will save? Let retain some small measure of self-control even when under the affect of a compulsion? Protect you from alignment shifts? I'd say it would let reroll a Will save against a non-instantaneous effect, and delay it if you fail the save. EDIT:I'm not being bitter here if you ask. It's just that I'm eager to learn some terms, since I'm not english at all. |

Let retain some small measure of self-control even when under the affect of a compulsion? Protect you from alignment shifts? Maybe it would make you think you are winning when you are actually getting your behind kicked, or vice-versa, like the 2E power Invincible Foes. Any disconnect between what you perceive and the implications or conclusions drawn from that input would qualify as cognitive dissonance. |

I think there'll be over 9000 "4e is anime" threads. Again. |
| InkBlot02-29-08, 02:00 PM | Invincible foes was already updated as delusions of granduer (I think that was the name). It's in the Spell Compendium, but it might have appeared elsewhere first. Cognitive dissonance isn't always a bad thing, and doesn't always involve denial of reality. I'd go on about this for hours, but I've got errands to run. |

| Tempest Stormwind02-29-08, 11:38 PM | More like 'still'. Oh, well. At least they've migrated from the Tome of Battle, in my experience. My only question is, what happens if they reprint Five Shadow Creeping Ice Enervation Strike as some power or other in 4e, but rename it Slow Death or Slay the Soul (or, in a more Gygaxian but no less ridiculous fashion, "Merlingoff's Murdering Man-touch")? Will the "iz 2 anime f u!" crowd spontaneously explode, Scanners-style, with the cognitive dissonance? |
