"Contingency" scenario - is this legit? [Archive] - Wizards Community

The scenario is a 15th level psion is charged by a 15th level barbarian. The barbarian wins initiative and closes to melee range, axe raised for a mighty hack.... until <pfffoop> psion's contingency power manifests, linked to 15 pt augmented temporal acceleration (2 rounds worth of actions).

Is this a legal use of contingency/temporal acceleration? In this scenario, is the psion able to use temporal acceleration to gain 2 rounds worth of (limited) actions, prior to the barbarian rolling to hit for his charge attack... for example, the psion might summon an astral construct (rd 1), then dimension door the hell out of there (rd 2)?

I thought this might be an interesting question because if it is a legit contingency combo, it allows for taking (limited) actions prior to your first true action in the initiative sequence.

cheers in advance for any comments

temporal acceleration is too high level for you to contingency, at least until you are 18th MFL. It can't be any higher than 1/3 your MFL max of 6th.

Even if he could contingincy that power, what is the triggering condition? "The next time someone tries to hit me"? If so, I'd have someone try to slap his back after he cracks a joke and set off his contingency, just to show him how short sighted that is.

"The next time someone hostile tries to hit me"
Is how I'd word it. A freindly slap is okay, but hostile means an enemy.

the trigger sounds good in the spirit of the game. Now to find a power that qualifies....

1 Question: Can Psionic Contigency determine hostile intent? If it can't, then the trigger either never happens, or happens the first time someone tries to hit you.

"Hostile" and "Ally are tricky concepts that spells/power can't "know" but you can.

Anyways, lower level Contingencies can involve Dimension Hop, Dimension Slide, or Dimension Door to avoid attacks. Dimension Swap would be hilarious, and would be a cool way to surprise an assailant by bringing a tank into the action.

oops yep temporal acceleration is 6th level, so the psion would need to be 18th... I would word the contingency as something like, "the next time someone tries to harm me", to avoid any friendly back slapping episodes.

cheers for those suggestions Kiklio

hmm also could use anticipatory strike (5th level), to bring a full action forward when the contingency goes off.

Of course this would leave your Psion completely vulnerable to Area Effects and even attacks that are not a "Hit"... such as Ranged touch attacks (eg. "HE POINTED AT ME!" )

I would word it: "If I am being intentionally attacked by somebody who wants to harm me", I think it qualifies. I also think that in the Psionic version, one could argue that because it is purely mental function, what triggers it is the Manifester's notion that the conditions have been met.

I don't see any legitimate reason why it couldn't.Spells like Bless recognize ally from enemy. So a power based on your mind should be able to understand who or what you constitute hostile.
Of course you could just have some annoyed street urchin throw a rock at him if you wanted to mess with the player.
