| Uchiha_Arthas03-04-07, 03:34 AM | Greetings, I'm new to psionics and wanted to give the Soul Knife class a go. I am planning to use BlaineTog's version if I can swing it by my DM. Is there suggestions that you could give me for a Two-weapon Soulknife build? (Non-human)? I was thinking of getting Weapon Finesse(MindBlade), Psionic Weapon, Deep Impact, Psionic Meditation and the Two-Weapon fighting feats probably upto improved at the least. Maybe upto Greater if I can spare the Stat increase to Dex. Also how necessary is Combat Manifestation (the Concentration feat) for the Soulknife? Thanks in advance. |
| WinterPsionic03-04-07, 02:07 PM | First let me start by saying I tried to go with a TWF SoulKnife, it went pretty well until about level 9-10 when I noticed a drop in power. At the same time I was running a THF SoulKnife in another campaign with similar DMing/Play styles and didn't notice that issue. Your feat selection looks nice, there really isn't any need for a straight soulknife to have Combat Manifestation but everything else looks good. The one problem I found with TWF was to truly maximize Psychic Strike and Psionic Weapon you had to prep them before battle and that's all the good they were, where as with a THF fighting approach you can still Focus, Spend and Bash. |

Curious, did you keep playing the Char upto about 13 when you get the Knife to the Soul ability? That's currently what I am planning for and am imagining taking out spell casters by charging up and disabling their stats.I know after the initial attacks I'll have to spend a bit of time repreping but potentially taking out 6 points of a casting stat, sounds great. If you did play upto 13 and beyond what was it like? Almost Forgot: Thanks for replying :) |
| MaverickWolf03-04-07, 07:30 PM | I'd just like to make a note that if you're playing 3.5 (as it appears you are), that Weapon Finesse no longer applies to only one weapon. As long as you have Weapon Finesse, it works for ALL light weapons, plus the rapier and spiked chain. |

To be honest I havent played D&D for a bit, I had a few serious game in 3.0 and then drifted off to play White Wolf and Exalted for a while. This will be my first game in 3.5. |
| Thomar_of_Uointer03-05-07, 12:12 AM | I would recommend using the two soulknife fixes from the Mind's Eye (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/psm/20070214a). One replaces Psychic Strike with fighter bonus feats, and the other replaces Wild Talent with Hidden Talent and lets you take it multiple times. These will help you immensely with your build. I would recommend force screen to give yourself the benefit of a shield while two-weapon fighting. |

I am a bit leary of replacing Psychic Strike if I am already taking BlaineTog's fix though. The number of feats available might be too much. Plus as I understand you need Pyschic strike dice to use Knife to the soul properly. Edit: Forgot to ask this: I was going to take Inertial Armour instead of Force Screen. Is there any reason you might recommend Force Screen over Inertial Armour for a TWF build? |
| FabulousRex03-05-07, 09:58 AM | Because Inertial Armor is an Armor bonus, and you can get that pretty easily just by wearing the Light armor you're proficient with. They don't stack together. Force Screen is a Shield bonus, which you normally can't wield while dual-wielding (a significant downside). But if you manifest F.Screen, you'll get +4AC that stacks with your mundane armor. I also like Pregocnitive Defense, as it raises your saves as well, though only by 1. If you're dual-wielding, go for a Xeph, and focus on hitting with those double-charged Psychic Strikes as often as possible. I wouldn't recommend taking focus-expending attacks while 2WFing, as that's just too many actions. Hitting and Hurting will be your big problems after your P.Strikes are expended, so try picking up Dragon #341, they have some nice feats to help out S.Knives, like Adamantine/Silver/Cold Iron shifting feats, and a feat similar to Practiced Manifester, that lets you advance 4 levels in a non-SK class but keep your Mind Blade progressing... |

Almost Forgot: Thanks for replying :) I kept that character till lvl 14, the Knife to the Soul helped a bit but I was always making REALLY bad rolls so it didn't help as much as it should, I also couldn't justify backing away from melee to recharge so I usually only got in the 2 strikes. I actually did quite a bit better with my THF afer taking a level in Psion and picking up a Psicrystal so it could hold a second focus for me....that's a good question, with the Mind Eye's fix could a SoulKnife qualify for a Psicrystal w/o a level dip? |
| InkBlot03-05-07, 05:21 PM | No, unfortunately. The Hidden Talent feat specifically states "this is not a manifester level" and Psicrystal Affinity requires "manifester level 1st." |

A Xeph gets a Power Point and Burst of speed but doesn't seem to have anything that would particulerly help overall. I was thinking of asking my DM if I could use the Metalline ability from FR:Underdark. I hope she agrees and I dont think it will affect the game balance too much. Having the +2 cost and having to choose it before hand should make a hefty balancer. |
| carnivore03-06-07, 12:52 PM | first...you also may want to take a look at the guide: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=372176 then try this: Human Swashbuckler 3/ Soulknife 5/ Soulbow or Illumine Blade seeing as how you plan on 2Weapon Fighting with it........you might as well focus on making AoOs...with Robilars Gambit(PHBII), and also use Double Hit(Mini Handbook) and Deft Opportunist(mini Handbook).....that way you will be even more dangerous when others attack you other feats: Mage Slayer (CA): This feat has caused much moaning and agony among mage players. It doesn’t necessary synergize well with the Occult Slayer PrC ... or any others that grant abilities with ‘caster levels’ ... by itself this feat has no downsides for a pure Soulknife. It should be given the utmost consideration in any mage slaying build. Pierce Magical Protection (CA): An even better feat for mage slayers. It’s kind of cool to picture your energy blade smashing through your targets occult defenses like they were so much butter. if you take levels of Soulbow.....take Zen Archery if you do try Soulbow...try this: Monk 2/ Swashbuckler 3/ Soulknife 3/ Illumine soul 4/ Soulbow 8 :D |
| FabulousRex03-06-07, 02:31 PM | Xeph's have Soulknife as a favored class, so no worries about multi-classing. Burst is a useful ability, but Complete Psionics has a few useful racial feats for Xephs, including taking an extra attack on a full attack (which stacks with Haste). The +2Dex really helps meet the 2WFing pre-reqs at higher levels as well, and -2STR doesn't matter a whole lot if you're not relying alot on STR to do damage. The various builds outlined below are all solid, but change how you play. Multiclassing _at all_ will lower your P.Strike damage, but you could get alot of other benefits as well. The nasty Robilar's Gambit build really benefits from a Fighter 4 dip for the feats needed to pull it off. Losing out on P.Strike for more feats can also be useful in such a build, and using W.Specialization and Piercing Weapon Mastery (PHBII) with the Collision enhancement to up your damage is solid, though feat-heavy. Soulbow completely changes the way a typical Soulknife is used in-game, and is an important distinction. They can be fun and powerful, but it's an entirely different type of attacker. Oh, and carnivore, I prefer a Kalashtar SK5/Monk4/Atavist4/Soulbow7 for that sort of ranged build. :D |
| SlanderPanic03-06-07, 02:51 PM | I kept that character till lvl 14, the Knife to the Soul helped a bit but I was always making REALLY bad rolls. Did you take Deep Impact? That would have helped a lot. If you tend to roll low more often than not, you should try to circumvent defenses as best you can. (Also: Either buy new dice or nuke one of the repeat offenders while the others watch. Nothing motivates dice quite like watching one of their bretheren melt away.) I actually did quite a bit better with my THF afer taking a level in Psion and picking up a Psicrystal so it could hold a second focus for me.... That was a really smart thing to do. |
| carnivore03-06-07, 02:57 PM | good point....SK5/Monk4/Atavist4/Soulbow7 is very strong....i prefer to alter it a bit.....SK 5/ Monk 3/ Atavist 4/ Soulbow 8....to get Phase Arrow: Phase Arrow (Ps): At 8th level, you can take a full attack action (in lieu of your regular attacks) to expend your psionic focus and launch a mind arrow at a target known to you within range. The mind arrow travels to the target in a straight path, passing through any nonmagical or nonpsionic barrier or wall on its way. (A wall of force, wall of fire, wall of ectoplasm, or the like stops a mind arrow.) This ability negates cover, concealment, and even armor modifiers, but otherwise the attack is rolled normally. very strong......but need to take a different set of feats as well(need Psi Meditation) Usually if i was going the 2 Weapon route.....i only take 3 levels of Soulknife....to qualify for Illumine Blade and only take 2 levels to get constand Undead Bane on Mindblade and Mind arrows.....and get Ghost Touch added to Mindblade property list also i try to get Ranger 2/ Fighter 2..instead of Fighter 4....you get lots more skill points and more feats.....but 2 Weapon Fighting is one you want anyway..the only drawback...No Weapon Specialization..... no matter what you want to do....they are all very Feat Intensive...so you cant do them all :D |
| Uchiha_Arthas03-09-07, 01:35 AM | Just thought I'd let people get some idea of the build I currently decided on. Its not complete or even half done but this is the general build(Just a reminder this is using BlaineTog's modified SoulKnife): Psionic Feats: (2ndLevel) Psi.Weapon, (6th) DeepImpact, (10th) Psi.Meditation, (14th) Psi. Overload (From Tempest Stormwind), (18th)Mind Cleave Ord.CharFeats: (1st) Racial Feat*, (3rd) WeaponFinesse, (6th)TWF, (9th) ImpTWF, (12th) Dual Strike (15th) MageSlayer/G.TWF, (18th) Pierce Magic Prot /G.TWF The feats in Italics are the ones I am mainly unsure about. How important do you think G.TWF, Dual Strike are to TWF? I am placing some importance to Dual Strike as it should allow me to charge up a blade and then attack with both blades in a round. Mage Slayer and Pierce Magic I am keeping on reserve because quite frankly the idea of being a bonafide mage killer is cool, I am not sure my current campaign will go down that road. *Racial Feat: Before Anyone asks, this feat is for the Racial Feat: LightSight, to remove penalties from my Drow and before anyone makes a comment, No he is not that stupid Ranger but more based on his Father and he is Lawful Evil** (My DM and freinds have an idea of what to expect from this char) and he is far more the assasin/sneaky fighter type. **Most Good Drows need to be shot in the head (firm belief) |
| snakebliskan03-10-07, 05:25 PM | If you are dead set on a soul knife i would say look into kalishtar from eberron campain setting they are in my opinion the best soul knives. |

Only with the Wild Talent variant from the Mind's Eye article. Kalashtar with that feat can afford to take utility powers, and use them often enough to make it count. |

| Uchiha_Arthas03-11-07, 06:58 PM | Would Love to take that Race, DM however doesnt want it in the campaign. |
