Am I correct in thinking that Astral Constructs have no Weapon Proficiencies? So if I toss my weapon to one of them, they'll eat the -4 to hit?

They'd probably hold the weapon in one hand, and continue to "Slam" the opponent with the other ..

You are correct, no proficiencies ..

If you look in the PHB .. you'll that weapon (and armor) proficiencies are "technically" feats ..

Read constructs in the monster manual: No feats, no skills ...
ergo .. no proficiencies ...
:tiphat:

I could see - for humour sake - the construct picking up the sword you tossed it, holding it incorrectly, and bashing his opponent in ... mechanically: just use his base slam and pretend the sword wasn't there ... hehe

Even a creature with an Intelligence of -- can use a weapon, see the Iron Construct commonly wielding a sword. Given the AC is under the control of the "Summoner" I don't see any reason I can't tell the AC to stab with the stick I gave it. Heck, it'll even be doing less damage than it would with the slam. I just need it to stake a vampire for me.

The answer you seek is in Traits
A construct possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).

No Constitution score.
Low-light vision.
Darkvision out to 60 feet.
Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects).
Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, and necromancy effects.
Cannot heal damage on their own, but often can be repaired by exposing them to a certain kind of effect (see the creature’s description for details) or through the use of the Craft Construct feat. A construct with the fast healing special quality still benefits from that quality.
Not subject to critical hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or energy drain.
Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless).
Not at risk of death from massive damage. Immediately destroyed when reduced to 0 hit points or less.
Since it was never alive, a construct cannot be raised or resurrected.
Because its body is a mass of unliving matter, a construct is hard to destroy. It gains bonus hit points based on size, as shown on the table.
Proficient with its natural weapons only, unless generally humanoid in form, in which case proficient with any weapon mentioned in its entry.
Proficient with no armor.
Constructs do not eat, sleep, or breathe.

Short answer: No, they're not proficient with weapons.

Just sculpt accordingly.

I've had a construct duplicate the form of our party "tank", using a greatsword... but statistically this is a "slam".

If the vampire is conscious, you'd have a hard time even if it was proficient. If he's unconscious, -4 doesn't really matter as it's standing still. Coup de Grace. Don't worry about the nonproficiency. ;)

Unfortunately, knocking a vampire unconscious is rather difficult. Fortunately, our DM has rules the Stake the Heart to be that a critical hit with a stake which does still does damage (i.e. gets through his DR) will Stake a vampire. I think the vampire we're going to run into keeps stoneskin up alot, so having my AC stake him is about our only shot of capturing him without killing him. And I've seen nothing that seems to indicate the AC can't use a stake if I hand him one, he just eats the -4 penalty, then it looks like we're good to go. Thanks,

Do note that DR of multiple kinds doesn't stack unless otherwise noted, so Stoneskin doesn't help a creature who already has DR 10.

Try a larger version of yourself, fully decked out in full plate and wielding a greatsword. :D

Damage Reduction doesn't work quite like that. DR doesn't stack, but it doesn't really overlap either. It combines. If a creature has DR 10/adamantine and DR 10/silver and magic, then it's DR can only be pierced by a magic silver adamantine weapon.

A vampire with stoneskin cast on it would have DR 10/adamantine and DR 10/silver and magic. Luckily for that vampire, it's impossible to have a weapon which is both adamantine and silver. Even with silversheen. I checked. Silversheen suppresses the original DR piercing properties of any special material it's applied to.

CA has a glove which makes your weapons be treated as magic silver for overcoming dr. So using it while wielding an adamantine weapon should let you overcome dr/magic+silver+adamantine.:)
