I've never played a Psion before, so I naturally want to try one, and I don't have the XPH, but I do have the SRD. I have read most of the "Myth: Psionics is over powered" thread, and searched this board for about 20 minutes and couldn't find this question. It's probably in the book, but here goes.

The SRD says that Astral Construct "creates a first level construct." Does that mean that when my psion (shaper) channels it, he can create, say, a 1st level human warblade, with the construct template on? Would I have to create said construct as I would a normal character (in advance of course)? Then, once my Psion reaches 3rd level, he can augment it (3rd level means 3 points per power) bringing it to a 2nd level warblade, or even a multiclass warblade/wizard building to a Jade Phoenix Mage? Because if that's how it works, that is awesome.:w00t:

If that's not how it works, then what do I do? Write up an "animated object" with 1 HD? Becasue if that's how it works, I really don't see why people love it so much more than Summon Monster/Nature's Ally x spells... :(

Thanks for any help!

Get the XPH.

An astral construct is a specific creature. It has a monster entry in the XPH (http://systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/psionicMonsters.html#astral-construct). When you manifest the astral construct power (http://systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/psionicPowersAtoC.html#astral-construct), it brings into existence a single astral construct. The astral construct dissolves after the duration of the power ends.

There are 9 kinds of astral constructs. Level 1 ACs, level 2, etc.. Additionally, each astral construct you make can be customized with special abilities from a short list.

note: Despite being discrete creatures, astral constructs are eminently customizable. They come in a variety of sizes, the menu choices allow each construct to do different things (one might fly, another might be able to shoot lasers, etc.), and you can change their appearances to suit your imagination.

Each time you manifest an astral construct, you make a craft (sculpture) check. The result of your check indicates how closely the AC resembles what you imagined. A result of 20 or higher looks like an accurate representation of what you want, and a result of 30 or higher can be identical to a particular individual.

Incidentally, the SRD page for the Astral Construct power, as mirrored on d20SRD.org, has a link to the on-site Astral Construct monster stat page. It's just one click from there to see what you create.

Statistically, they're similar to earth elementals sans special abilities.

Oh wow, thanks. The menu abilities and whatnot do look pretty cool, and I like the sculpt idea. And, my friend has the XPH but he's out of town for a week. I probably will get or for myself pretty soon though.

I thought you meant you were using that craptacular download from WoTC ;)

A poster around here by the name of The_Ditto did a Astral Construct builder once. I never got to use it, but lots of people said it was very good. You should try and find it.

Seeing as I host it, I can just link it up (http://www.telusplanet.net/~sdupuis/Tempest/AstralConstructs.zip).

I also have a collection of similar sheets designed with OpenRPG in mind, but those are naturally less applicable.
