03-04-07, 11:02 AM To what extent can astral constructs be used as mounts, if at all?

If an astral construct has fly or improved fly, can it only fly if it's carrying a light load?

Does an astral construct have to be shaped into a quadruped with a craft (sculpture) check of 10 or higher to be usable as a mount?

Does it have to be one size category larger than its rider to be usable?

03-04-07, 11:14 AM I don't see why you couldnt. However keep the limitations of a mount in mind when doing so.

1.) It must be one size catagory larger than its rider.
2.) Just because you shape it into resembling a quadraped doesnt meant it gets a increase in land speed or any other speeds unless you specificially chose that ability from the list of optional abilities to give it when manifesting it.
3.) Speed modes are reduced based on carrying capacity and or armor but in this case its just carrying loads, figure out the carrying capacity of a bipedal creature is of your constructs size and strength (namely because it seems that was what the base astral construct idea was based around.) and use that to determine when its speed in any movement mode would be reduced or restricted.
4.) It maybe up to your DM to determine how Ride checks are used in this situation, since it is a creature created from your mind it doesnt really need to guided in the same manner of seperate living creature might need to, but its all up to the DM you may or may not need to make any ride checks at all.

I thought about doing this once myself but never did, I didnt wanna open a can of worms that wasnt already handled by the people of WotC.

03-04-07, 11:18 AM Though I have nothing to back this up (I'm not digging out books and the SRD doesn't codiefy it), these are the requirements for a mount:

-Must be at least one size larger than you

I'm pretty sure that's it. I really thought there was more at the beginning of this post, but as to you other questions:

Does it have to be a quadreped? Nope, it can be a wacky blob of goo, have 2 legs, or 36 legs, all form will do is make your ride checks higher or lower. (Don't belive me? When was the last time you saw a child ride "piggy back"?)

Can it fly under encumbrence? Nope, nothing can, even your ectoplasmatic crafted buddy. (I could be wrong, but I don't think so)

Oh, can you use it as a mount? Sure, you can even you that PC who decided to make a large charecter as a mount. Just slap an exotic saddle on the thing, or better yet craft it with an exotic saddle.

03-04-07, 12:07 PM Regarding the Astral Dragoon, couldn't a Psychic Warrior just take Expanded Knowledge: Astral Construct, and create the Bayard himself. Why does it specifically require a psion to do so?

As a DM, I would allow a quadrupedal astral construct with a DC 10 scuplting check (as described in the monster entry). However, it would suffer from shorter reach as normal.

03-05-07, 06:00 PM I have a blue shaper/constructor that has Boots of Levitation, and used his long-lasting constructs to carry him around (even the small ones). He just activated his boots (which essentially nullified his body's weight, as well as that of his equipment) and had a construct tow him around.

Hey, it worked for me.
