| ReaderOfPosts01-01-08, 05:30 PM | I'm playing an Erudite in one of my campaigns (with the Freedom Mantle option from Mind's Eye). Having just reached 5th level, I took Craft Dorje, but I'm still working on what dorjes to make. I've reasoned so far that powers that meet the following criteria are the best candidates from crafting onto a wand. Low level Powers that don't require augmentation to be effective (so are cheaper) e.g. Grease Powers that I want to always be available (so I don't need to worry about leaving a unique power/day for them) e.g. Dimension Hop Powers that I don't use every round (because I'd rather use up my Power points than charges.) e.g. Astral Construct (ignoring point 1) Powers that don't need a high ML (for maintaining hour/lvl long buffs and the like) e.g. Vigor So far I was thinking of putting a wand chamber of Dimension Hop in my crossbow (which I have readied all the time). I also am considering making a ML 2 wand of vigor and using a unique power/day on share pain to utilize that combo. I have money left for a few more cheap wands: any more suggestions? |

Psionic Knock is a good power to have as a stone's. There are just some locks you can't pick and some doors you can't smash down. |

| ReaderOfPosts01-02-08, 12:45 AM | The appeal of erudite to me is you don't have to worry as much about the "just in case powers" on stones, since you can pick them up with a unique power/day. The nice thing about having Share pain up and vigor on a dorje is that I can then always have share pain up and then use vigor if combat happens. I don't like the idea of expending resources just to be combat ready: I want to avoid burning through two or three charges a day at ML 3 just to have the share pain combo set up. A dorje of Vigor at ML 2 is also a third the cost of ML 3 dorje of share pain. |
| hovnarr01-02-08, 06:57 AM | Having share pain pre-activated without vigor is risky, unless you like repairing your psicrystal a lot. Also, I'm not sure share power works when the source of the power is a dorje and not yourself. Can anyone confirm/deny this? My ardent constantly used a dorje of psywar biofeedback for DR, since even at 1 ML, it's useful. Added to my databank of low level psionic cheese. ;) |

But the flip side of that is when you've used up your unique powers/day, you're stuck without access to any of those powers. I haven't played an erudite, but I figured you would use your unique powers/day for things you're more likely to get more than one use out of per day. |
| AntiDjinn01-02-08, 12:25 PM | Call to Mind is a good stick power. Its normal 1 minute manifestation time means it is generally used outside of combat, so in situations where it would apply you will have time to fish it out of your backpack. The only limitation on such a dorje would be your DM's handling of failed knowledge checks: If your character thinks he knows the right answer when he is mistaken, then he will have no reason to activate the device to gain a retry. |
| awaken_D_M_golem01-02-08, 04:44 PM | Freedom Mantle + Substitute Powers = Doesn't Schism "free" more of your mind? Doesn't Metamorph "free" your body from the constraints of mortal form? Doesn't Bestow Power "free" your pp pool from the inherent restrictions of Psionics as compared to Magic? It's all about freedom baby !! { ... insert speedy road-runner-ish smiley face ... } At 5th level, you've got enough moolah to make sure you make the Psicraft check DCs. Item of +5 Circumstance, +5 SomethingA, +5 SomethingB, etc Put 2 or 3 charges into the Power Stone, so's you can remake the stone after you use it once or twice. 2+ rounds, and 2+ skill checks, and 2 AoO against you, sounds like out of combat buff power material. Talk to you DM about Metamind 1 providing Use all 1st level powers you know 3/day free. Metamind sucks, but it gets around the very limited powers per day restriction of the Erudite. Just 1st level power. Might not be worth the agitation. Have fun. |

I haven't played an erudite, but I figured you would use your unique powers/day for things you're more likely to get more than one use out of per day. An erudite ends up playing very similarly to a chameleon: you can be anything (any flavor of psion) but not at the same time. At worst an erudite is a wilder with faster gain of powers but poor BAB and no wildsurge. At best, an erudite sits around and pulls out the perfect power to slaughter your opponent. This has been the manifester that I've used a weapon with the most, because in a battle we're fairly certain to win, I'd rather keep an extra unique power than use a new one. It's been worth it on more than one occasion (e.g. shutting down 6 lvl 2 drow rangers in a windy cave with control wind from summon elemental steward air) At 5th level, you've got enough moolah to make sure you make the Psicraft check DCs. I'm not entirely sure I know what you're getting at. We use all the rule changes in Complete Psionics, so Powerstones get burned out after you contact them. Are you suggesting using them for buffs in the like to take advantage of my own ML at the cost of a first level stone? I really do hesitate to cast buffs from stones, since I hate using expendable resources on days I don't know if I'll need them. It would be cheaper though than using charges from a dorje for buffs. We (me and the wilder) have run out of pp's twice in this campaign, once in a situation where we won by inflicting nearly 30 points of damage with weapons (the two of us being the only remaining conscious party members). Although higher levels ease this a fair bit, it's still nice to free up pps in tough encounters with expendable items. |
| DracoPhoenix01-04-08, 02:38 PM | Force screen, pre-cog offensive, defensive, prescience, offensive Minor creation (black lotus poison, purfume) control flames (emergency fire suppression) know direction and location (campaign dependent) call to mind (campaign dependent) control light (aid another on hide :)) bolt (campaign dependent, cheap +1 ammo) attraction (attention diversion / misdirection) matter aggitation (expensive way to light the camp fire, or cook the guy in full plate) Actually, most of the L1 powers that don't require aug'ing are useful as sticks. Won't be amazing at L10, but still useful. Heck, even the crappy +2hp heal spell the Ardent gets is enough to stabilize someone (like the soon to be ex-healer) |
