When a power says "Pay 4 PP to get ability 1. For every 2 PP spent, you get ability 2"

Does this mean if you pay the 4 PP for ability 1, you also get 2 shots of ability 2?

And if a power has two "For every" augmentations, does that mean you get both when paying?

Can we get an example? Every power in the XPH is open gaming license, so you can post whichever you're having problems with here.

Depends on the exect wording of the power. My advice: go to the Revised (v.3.5) System Reference Document (http://boards1.wizards.com/leaving.php?destination=http://www.wizards.com/default.asp%3Fx%3Dd20/article/srd35) and ctrl-c ctrl-v the exact power to which your question refers.

<edit>Batshido beat me to the answer, stil the link in my post is good</edit>

I think I can answer this.

If the abilities are presented in a numeric list, they're seperate and you have to pay for both to get both abilities.

EDIT: For example, ectoplasmic cocoon.

If there is an extra sentence below the numeric list that has no number in front of it, you'll get the ability or abilities in that sentence if you pay for any of the numeric abilities. This sentence is usually an increase in DC.

EDIT: For example, dominate.

Right, for example:
Ectoplasmic Cocoon has these listed:

Augment
You can augment this power in one or both of the following ways.

For every 2 additional power points you spend, this power’s save DC increases by 1.
For every 2 additional power points you spend, this power can affect a target one size category larger.

That's two different ways you can spend augment points. If you spend 4 extra points, you can affect large creatures and boost the save by 1, or you can increase the save DC by 2, or you can affect huge creatures.

By contrast, Energy Ball says
For every additional power point you spend, this power’s damage increases by one die (d6). For each extra two dice of damage, this power’s save DC increases by 1.
This clearly gives you BOTH effects, because the save DC is based on dice instead of points.

And finally, there's Dominate:
You can augment this power in one or more of the following ways.

If you spend 2 additional power points...
For every 2 additional power points you spend, this power can affect an additional target...
If you spend 1 additional power point, this power’s duration is 1 hour rather than concentration...

In addition, for every 2 additional power points you spend to achieve any of these effects, this power’s save DC increases by 1.
See, the DC increase explicitly notes that it uses the points you're burning on the previously stated augmentations.

If it doesn't seem clear that you get both effects simultaneously, then you don't. They're pretty good about explicitly saying so if you do.

BloodyChariot and Keenath sum it up perfectly. Was there any particular power you had in mind, Tyroki?
Tyroki

No. Yeah, I was meaning it as a general thing across all powers. I'm creating a few for researching, and I didn't quite understand how it worked.

Actually Keenaths examples pretty much showed what I wanted to know.

See, the power I'm creating is as follows:

Barrage of Pain
Psychokinesis [see text]
Level: Psion 1
Display: Auditory, Visual
Manifesting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Short (50 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Target: One creature
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: No
Power Resistance: No
Power Points: 1
With a flashy show of forcing ones palms forward several times, the manifester unleashes a small barrage of weak projectiles. Just a little something Raan's cooked up to show the youngens "How it's done". That is of course, by unleashing a 1d4 volley of 1d2 damage force bolts.

This power can not be used in conjunction with Maximize Power

Augment:
For each additional power point you spend, each bolt deals an additional die of damage. For every two additional dice of damage, the volley size increases by 1d4

Edit: How does this look now?

I take it thats a no for help ^^; It's only a flavour power that fits my character, but this won't be my only self-created power in the campaign >.> So, I need to be sure I'm doing things right.

this would get broken quickly if you were to combine it with maximize power.

just ask your DM if you can use crystal shard and have it look like you want this power to look, imo.

Well, since you KNOW how it should work, the way it is written doesn't matter. :D You're in full control of the RAI.

I'd state it as:
For every extra 1 PP spent, the damage increases by 1d2. For every 2 PP spent in this manner, the volley size increases by 1d4.

By the way, I don't find it broken, but the double random factor along with the simultaneous scaling does benefit greatly from Maximize Power. I'd either disallow maximisation on one of the dies or make the augments work separately. I prefer the latter, personally.

Think of each augment as warranty deals or options for your car or whatever else the sales demons are trying to steal from you. You've paid for the power; for a few points more you get all these goodies, such as additional damage -- and if you enough extra damage we'll throw in a DC increase for free! For each additional power point you spend, each bolt deals an additional die of damage. For every two additional dice of damage, the volley size increases by 1d4.That's how it should be phrased to work the way you want it to. Note how coupled augments (like this) do NOT use power points as the trigger for the increased DC, but rather the benefits of spending the power points. This helps avoid confusion if you actually slow down and think about it.

Do note that this would indeed be quite broken with maximize.
Tyroki

06-08-07, 07:57 PM
Broken with maximise eh?

This just a basic edition of the power. I was going to make one later with different augment options for more flavour ^^ Sort of like a signature power. The power of chance =D

So... "This power can not be used in conjunction with Maximize Power" would make even more sense, as I want the power to work like rolling a dice. It's all a matter of chance, and luck. ^^ Thanks everyone.

How does it look with the modifications?

Edit: And... O.O Being helped by Tempest Stormwind O.O It's like being helped by Bacrisis and Hovnarr O.o Now all thats left is to be helped by Antidjinn o.o

I'm just looking over this power again, and even if I disallow using Maximize Power with it, whats the general outlook of pain from this power? I'm getting the feeling that even as it is, it's insanely high... Could someone calculate?

At level 20, augmented to max it's 10d4 volleys of 20d2 blasts, fo an average output of 25*30=750 force damage, in a 200-1600 range.

...

Ah, and if you overchannel, it becomes 12d4*23d2 i.e. 276-2208, average 1035, [no,no] force damage.

I retract my previous statement, it IS broken.
Is there a to-hit roll for each bolt?

If no, it's even more devastating.
If yes... Good luck rolling 24d4 times.

So my calculations WEREN'T off. This power needs a balancing act. Could someone give me a hand? >.> I don't want it to be so unbalanced...

Barrage of Pain
Psychokinesis [Force]
Level: Psion 1
Display: Auditory, Visual
Manifesting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./level)
Area: 15 ft diameter
Target: One or more creatures
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Reflex negates
Power Resistance: Yes
Power Points: 1

You fire a bolt of force at a foe, dealing 1d4 damage.

Augment: For every additional power point you spend, this power gains another force bolt. You can aim for a different creature, if you so desire. For every 3 power points you spend in this way, this power's diameter increases by 5 ft.

...Erm...yeah. It's like a cross between magic missile, energy missile, and concussion blast. So...maybe come up with something else?

O.o Wow. That wouldn't be a half bad cross by level 20... Aim every bolt on the same spot and BOOM XD Augmented to 20 power points thats 20 shots of 1d4, each bolt having... O.o 45foot diametre... XD And a 105ft range if I'm not mistaken. That just brings up so many awesome images O.o And lots of craters in the ground xD Still >.> Me no like the save or the resistance though...

Targets must make separate Reflex saves for each bolt fired. For every 3 power points you spend in this way, this power's diameter increases by 5 ft.

Edited. Note that the target is one creature. It's not an AoE power, but you instead can fire all of the bolts of force at different creatures, dealing 1d4 points of damage per force bolt at the ones you hit.

Sorry, it was my fault.

I can't believe I didn't think of it earlier >.> This is sheer brilliance =D

Barrage of Pain
Psychokinesis [Force]
Level: Psion 1
Display: Auditory, Visual
Manifesting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Area: 30 ft diameter; see text
Target: One or more creatures
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Reflex (Half - See text)
Power Resistance: No
Power Points: 1

You fire a volley of 1d6 force bolts, each dealing 1 damage per bolt. These bolts can be spread out within the powers diameter, effectively spreading the damage at will. However, this does not mean each creature takes the maximum possible dealt damage. Infact, the damage taken, comes from the maximum volley bolt pool of whatever is rolled. As an addect effect, each bolt gives off a small dome of force energy. Creatures that succeed a reflex save dodge half of the bolts heading their way.

ie: Raan spends 3pp to fire a 3d6 volley. The area is 30 feet. He rolls a 5,3, and a 2. He has 10 damage he can spread to any enemies within that area. There are 3 enemies. He decides that the first enemy should take 4, the second 3, and the third 3. The damage has now been spread.

Augment: For every additional power point you spend, the volley increases by 1d6 in size. For every 3 power points you spend in this way, this power's diameter increases by 5 ft.

My DM's allowing it and my character is researching it as we speak ^^ He actually let me increase the range and stuff because he's curious about it. Very flavourful. All hail, the Barrage of Pain!

Note: No power has both an area and a target unless there are alternate effects (for instance, a power targeted at a creature followed by a secondary area effect; I can't think of such an effect, but they probably exist).

Functionally, this power can be represented as a targeted power that has Lycanthromancer's augment text edited thus:

Augment: For every additional power point you spend, this power gains another force bolt, which you can aim for a different creature somewhere within the power's area, if you so desire or at the same creature. No two targets can be more than 15' apart. Targets must make separate Reflex saves for each bolt fired. For every 3 power points you spend in this way, this power's diameter increases by 5 ft the targets can be up to 5 feet further apart.

Intellect Bomb (CPsi) is the only one I can think of. The target must save or die, and then everyone in the area (centered on the target) takes damage (Reflex half).

Incidentally, in the book's tradition of poor editing, the Target entry specifies "one living creature" while the power description states that it can, in fact, "destroy" an undead instead of killing a living creature.
Tyroki

He did have one request though, which I've just editted in here. A reflex save, which makes sense. So, a target can now dodge half of the bolts which are targetting them. They aren't homing.

Well, it *was* just a quick once-over. I'm at the library with limited time, so I can't take my leisure on fine-tuning things. I'll do better later. Promise.

Hey come on man O.o I used your version as a sort of template when I thought of returning it to a volley of 1 damage bolts. Now, it's similar to his one, but not like the powers and spell he mentioned. I pulled it off ingame. It's actually quite fun to use, especially envision. So I have 'you' to thank for this ^^

So, thank you for your help Lycan ^^ You helped make it as I hoped it would be, helping cut away the cheese.

Edit: Note, you need to clear your PM box a bit xD I wanted to send this "What are you on about? You seem almost upset. Dude, it's thanks to you that Barrage of Pain is as it is now, and thanks to you I'm enjoying it. The area diameter was pure genius =D Then, re-adding the volley to adjust to that with the sort of, Magic Missile effect, it now does what I really wanted it to do, minus the 1500 average damage cheese xD"
