Hi,

1- I am wondering the exact effect of burrowing bonds. I guess you are considered pinned:
-4AC, unable to speak and move, no dexterity bonus (sneak attack), no threatened squares, concentration checks for pure mental actions.

Is this correct?

Can you hit the target and not destroying the bonds?

2- Ectoplasmic cocoon

I see you are helpless. Can you hit the target inside the cocoon without breaking it? (non slashing weapons i guess)

Thanks for answers

1. Burrowing bonds doesn't actually say it restricts your movement in any way. It just holds on to you real tight, making it difficult to remove the crystals that are cutting into your flesh and dealing damage every round.

However, it could be read to imply that you can only take mental actions. If you read it that way, then you still don't have any of those penalties you listed. It would be like being dazed -- no actions but no penalties. Burrowing bonds doesn't actually say this, and in fact suggests strongly that a victim can take non-mental actions by listing the actions it can take to free itself.

Yes, Complete Psionic sucks.

2. You can't hit the target inside the coccoon. You could drop the guy off a
40 foot cliff and he wouldn't get hurt. The only way to affect a cocooned person without removing the cocoon first is to dump them in a river. That would cut off the air supply, and suffocate the person.

The creature inside is sufficiently visible to block line of effect, and is presumably sufficiently visible to be the subject of a targeted spell. Would that make Burrowing Power a valid means of attacking the creature?

Burrowing Power is pretty much the only way to directly affect people in ectoplasmic cocoons without cutting them out first. It would only work with area powers, or other powers that don't require line of sight (rays iirc), but it would work.

Ectoplasmic cocoon states that it blocks line of sight. To paraphrase the power, the creature within the cocoon is visible only as a shape substantially vague enough to interrupt line of sight. It also states that the creature inside can't see out, which gives us a very good idea of how opaque the ectoplasm is. It's more opaque than a bedsheet, which any little kid knows you can see through if you put one over your head.

An ectoplasmic cocoon blocks just about everything. It's like being encased in stone (hardness 8). Cocooning your fallen allies is actually a great way to keep them from being finished off by your enemies. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if there are psions who sleep in their own cocoons ever night just to be safe (the mass version lasts long enough).

Ectoplasmic Cocoon
Metacreativity
Level: Shaper 3
Display: Auditory and material
Manifesting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./ level)
Target: One Medium or smaller creature
Duration: 1 round/level (D)
Saving Throw: Reflex negates
Power Resistance: No
Power Points: 5

You draw writhing strands of ectoplasm from the Astral Plane that wrap up the subject like a mummy. The subject can still breathe but is otherwise helpless, unable to see outside the cocoon, speak, or take any physical actions. The subject’s nostrils are clear (air passes through the cocoon normally). The subject can execute purely mental actions (such as manifesting powers or casting spells with no verbal, somatic, or material components).

Cutting or damaging the cocoon can free a victim. The cocoon has hardness 8 and 20 hit points. Teleportation and other forms of travel provide a means of escape, but the cocoon extends into the Ethereal Plane, blocking ethereal travel. An ectoplasmic cocoon can’t be affected by dispel psionics, but it can be dismissed with dismiss ectoplasm, or otherwise destroyed by extreme measures or items.

The creature within the cocoon is visible only as a vague shape (substantial enough to interrupt line of sight) and cannot be directly harmed or interacted with unless the cocoon is destroyed. The cocooned creature can be moved normally (the weight of the cocoon is negligible).

A creature that is cocooned while aloft begins to fall immediately, and a creature that is cocooned while swimming or underwater may drown.

Augment: You can augment this power in one or both of the following ways.

1. For every 2 additional power points you spend, this power’s save DC increases by 1.

2. For every 2 additional power points you spend, this power can affect a target one size category larger.
