| Blackshade04-12-08, 06:20 PM | My group is doing a Caster Campaign and I'm having the following problem: I'm playing a spellthief since everyone said we needed a rogue-like character and I was cool with it. However I came across the problem that now I'm useless and completly overshadowed by everyone in my group. I'm going to make a new character and I was given advice from Moosh Nailo that I should give you guys a try! I want to make a fast moving or sturdy caster type. I want to avoid going back to being a skill monkey. |
| Blackshade04-12-08, 08:32 PM | Nothing? No advice at all? |
| Deathmond04-12-08, 09:01 PM | Sturdy caster type? Have you thought of going for a gish? A melee mage may be what you're looking for. What books are available? What are your stats? What level is it starting at? Do you want to play a psionic character in particular, or was it just that you were directed here? |
| Moosh Nailo04-12-08, 09:02 PM | Its a weekend, you've gotta give people a little more time :P I also suggest giving a more detailed description of what kind of character you're looking for; do you want a blaster? a psion(shaper), to summon astral constructs to mix it up in melee? or a utility manifester? Be specific! Help us help you:) Make sure to glance over the FAQ (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=638776) and sticky at the top. For a psychic warrior, here is a build guide (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=860838)-type thing, the first part is worth a read for learning's sake. I'm sure there is one for the psion floating around somewhere |
| Blackshade04-12-08, 09:04 PM | Haha sorry. I've always wanted to try out Psionics but I have little experience in the area. I have Complete Psionics at hand and I can have access to XPH once a week or so. I'm starting anywhere from 3-5 most likely, and I haven't rolled any stats yet. What's a Gish? |
| Deathmond04-12-08, 09:08 PM | It's a fighter-mage type of character. You can find most of the XPH in the SRD (d20srd.org). And yes, details like what you want the character to do are important. |
| Blackshade04-12-08, 09:13 PM | I want my character to be sort of fast, with a decent amount of HP, but I don't need alot, maybe a D8. Maybe Light armor and Martial Weapons, I planned on using a scythe for my next character for flavor. I need enough powers to keep up with the Wizard, Cleric, and Warlock, since they all get abilites that are insanely powerful or limitless in the case of the Warlock. |
| Blackshade04-12-08, 09:33 PM | I liked the Soulknife but he Doesn't have any powers which is kinda disappointing |
| Jaid04-12-08, 09:45 PM | sounds like the ardent may be what you're looking for then, if you ask me. possibly with a little bit of (illithid) slayer mixed in. |
| Blackshade04-12-08, 09:47 PM | Ardent is in CP right? |
| The_Mess04-12-08, 11:25 PM | Yes, Ardent is in CP. it gets a medium BAB, knows fewer powers than the straighforward psion, but gets the same number of Power Points. That makes him less flexible, but better for a more focused build, especially if you want a melee combatant. The alternative is the Psychic Warrior, who doesn't get as many powers or power points, but who gets a lot of extra feats and, if I rmemeber correctly, has a better hit die. (They get a d8, I think Ardents get a d6.) Note, if you don't have the XPH handy, you can find most of what it contains here: http://www.d20srd.org/index.htm |
| Blackshade04-12-08, 11:27 PM | I was think of PrC into an Elocater after I took a look at the class, do you recommend that class by any chance? |
| Lycanthromancer04-13-08, 02:10 AM | Elocator is mainly worth it as a dip class unless you have some serious tricks you want to pull off that specifically use the elocator's class abilities. It gives up too many manifester levels (unless your character's MLs are secondary to its other abilities, and are nearly beside-the-point anyway, or are limited, such as a scout/warmind/elocator [with the elocator levels advancing the warmind's manifesting]). It's a trick class, and not for a full-manifester to mess with. What level are you? You might enjoy a The Big Guy is With Me build, where you take levels in either egoist or psychic warrior, then get a psicrystal, then take enough Improved Psicrystal feats so that your psicrystal gets the Channel Power ability, then you hide while you manifest, say, metamorphosis on your psicrystal and heal and buff your psicrystal while it kicks ass. You could also be doing things like debuffing your enemies and doing battlefield control, manifesting astral construct (via Expanded Knowledge) as a flanking buddy, and so on. Just get a Small-sized character and hide in a bag of holding, or something. It's pretty darned effective, especially since psicrystals keep all of their (Su) abilities, and should keep all of the psicrystal special abilities based on their owner's level (such as improved natural armor bonuses, flight, and so on). |
| Blackshade04-13-08, 01:31 PM | Ah I see. I actually am playing a homebrew race that allows a Jump Speed, or allows you to jump in any direction at the total speed. I thought It would a cool combo since I could jump up 30 feet and stay there with the levitating. Come to think of it, I only need one level for that to work. |
| mod500004-13-08, 06:30 PM | Another option might be Monk 2 / PsyWar X with Tashalatora, followed with taking Improved Natural Attack (on your Unarmed attacks), using Expansion, and ripping it up while still being fast, agile, and with great AC. |
