Deep Crystal vs sonic/shatter? [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-08-07, 08:29 AM Hiya everyone, just a quick question really,

I am thinking of having my two +1 ghost touch short swords crafted out of deep crystal but I was wondering if such a material is particularly susceptible to any spells (such as shatter) or sonic damage, as it is forged from crystal, and if this makes the material to risky.

03-08-07, 09:15 AM For the most part so long as it's magical or attended its no more vulnerable than normal steel.

Spells like Shatter or powers like Control Sound can damage fragile stuff like crystal but only if non-magical/psionic and unattended.

From a materials science standpoint it's a bit unfair to make a distinction between metal and crystals. Metals tend to be very strong precisely because of their underlying 'crystalline' structure.

03-08-07, 07:24 PM shatter can affect one object of any material composition weighing up to 1 pound per caster level, iirc. about the only way for a material to be more resistant to the spell than any other material is for said material to be heavier.

A well-shot sonic-ray can still really hurt.

So no, magical crystal weapons are not any more vulnerable to shatter than other magical weapons. A targetted Dispel Magic can make either temporarily non-magical, and vulnerable. Otherwise they are unaffected by the spell.
