| Bocamb09-25-07, 05:00 PM | Here's the scenario that my group was discussing last night: Half of the party had advance information which told them that they would be facing a party of sahuagin armed with lots of nets. The two characters (one an elf psion, the other a half-giant psy warrior) with this information developed the following plan: use the half-giant tank as the main target for the sahuagin, drawing net attacks. Once entangled, the psion would then use dimension swap to change the half-giant's position with the party's halfling thief (who has excellent escape artist abilities), freeing the giant to beat up on the baddies and putting the halfling in a situation that was easy to worm his way out of. My question is: would the net travel with the swapped half-giant? From the SRD: "You instantly swap positions between your current position and that of a designated ally in range. Alternatively, you can swap the positions of any two allies in range. This power affects creatures of Large or smaller size. You can bring along objects, but not other creatures." The word "can" here gives me pause because it suggests that the psion is able to choose whether or not he wants the net to go with the half-giant. Does this explain why the Saving Throw vs. this power is "Will negates (harmless, object)"? I'm confused by this - is this a shorthand way of saying that if the half-giant makes a successful Will save, the net doesn't go with him? I'm somewhat new to psionics, and honestly don't know how to adjudicate this one. Thanks for your help. |

The "will negates (harmless, object)" means that the power is able to effect objects and that anybody targeted by the power knows that it won't hurt them if they choose to forego their will save. Objects never get saving throws unless their attended or magic. An attended object uses it's attendee's save. A magic object has a save bonus of 2 + 1/2 it's caster level, but if it's being attended then it can use it's attendee's save if that's higher. In this case, the net is either being attended by the sahaugin holding the control line, or the half-giant if the sahaugin let go of the control line. The half giant can make a save for the net to prevent it from being effected, but that wouldn't be needed if the psion decided not to bring along the net. |
