| Scalamander05-27-07, 11:31 PM | Here's an idea for combining psionics with the warlock from Complete Arcane. It follows the same basic principles as the Eldritch Disciple and Eldritch Theurge from Complete Mage with a few minor tweaks. I'm still debating whether to make more abilities that can only be gained if you have taken a certain discipline. This may fit the flavor of the psion better but limit the ability of other classes, like the wilder and psycker to take it. Also I was unsure whether the ability to steal power points or to put power points into an eldritch blast to gain more damage would be better. I went with the first but may change this in the future. Entry Requirements: Skills: Knowledge (psionics) 8 ranks, Knowledge (the planes) 8 ranks Powers: Ability to manifest 2nd level powers Invocations: Ability to use least invocations Special: Eldritch Blast +2d6 1. +0 +0/+0/+0* DR 1/Crystal 2. +1 +0/+0/+0 Eldritch Blessing 3. +2 +1/+1/+1 Psiblast 4. +3 +1/+1/+1 DR 2/Crystal 5. +3 +1/+1/+1 Mindweave 6. +4 +2/+2/+2 7. +5 +2/+2/+2 DR 3/Crystal 8. +6 +2/+2/+2 9. +6 +3/+3/+3 Dire Eldritch Blessing 0. +7 +3/+3/+3 DR 4/Crystal, Greatreach Blast (2+int mod) Autohypnosis, Bluff, Concentration, Craft, Intimidate, Knowledge (psionics), Knowledge (the planes), Profession, Use Magic Device. Class Features: Manifesting: An Eldritch Savant gains new powers and power points as if he had gained a level in the manifesting class to which he belonged before. He gains no other benefits from an increase of level in that class however. Invocations: An Eldritch Savant gains new invocations and an increase in damage to Eldritch Blast as if he had just gained a level in the invocation using class he was in before. He gains no other benefits from an increase of level in this class however. Damage Reduction (Su): Fortified by the mental and supernatural energies flowing within, an Eldritch Savant gains DR 1/Crystal at first level. This increases to DR 2 at 4th level, DR 3 at 7th level and DR 4 at 10th level. Eldritch Blessing: At 2nd level Eldritch Savants gain an ability dependant on their chosen discipline. All these abilities cost 2 power points per creature which is affected by the blast: - Clairsentience (Chronal Jitter): Whenever a creature would be hit by your eldritch blast you may instead change it to a Chronal Blast. If struck by a chronal blast an opponent is dazed for 1 round (no save). - Psychoportation (Halting Burst): Once per round you may ready an Eldritch Blast against a creature that may move this turn. If it does so and you succeed on your attack roll it takes damage as normal and loses its move action. - Telepathy (Seductive Surge): Whenever you hit an opponent with an Eldritch Blast you can see into their mind as read thoughts with a caster level equal to the level of the Eldritch Blast. - Psychometabolism (Sapping Ray): You create a psionic feedback loop in your Eldritch Blast that returns ¼ of the damage dealt to you as temporary hitpoints. These fade after ten rounds and are non cumulative, meaning that any additional hitpoints gained as a result of other blasts are lost unless they exceed the total of the first batch. These hit points fade after 10 rounds. - Metacreativity (Entangling Strands): You can lace your Eldritch Blast with astral matter creating a solid mass of thick, binding material which can entangle as the spell for 1d4-1 rounds. - Psychokinesis (Volatile Blast): An Eldritch Savant may charge his blast with volatile elemental matter making it do more damage over time. Upon the next round after being damaged by an Eldritch Blast the creature takes damage equal to ¼ of the original damage dealt from the blast. Psiblast (Sp): This invocation (Lesser; 4th; Eldritch Essence) allows you to place any psionic power that effects an area on your blast. Mindweave (Su): Beginning at 5th level you can apply an eldritch essence invocation you know to any power that affects a target or requires a melee or ranged touch attack. The powers level must be at least as high as that of the eldritch essence used. This increases the casting time to one full action and you can use it a number of times per day equal to 3 plus your Charisma Modifier (minimum 1). Dire Eldritch Blessing: At 9th level Eldritch Savants gain a greater ability dependant on their chosen discipline… Greatreach Blast (Sp): This invocation (Greater; 5th; Eldritch Essence) allows you to place a power with a range of touch into your Eldritch Blast. If the eldritch blast hits its target the spell takes effect as though you had touched the creature. It requires one full action to invoke a greatreach blast and the touch spell cannot exceed 1 standard action in casting time. *Base Saves are dependent on Discipline selected. Telepaths and Seers get a good save in Will, Shapers and Nomads get a good save in Ref, and Kineticists and Egoists get a good save in Fort. |
| CrimsonDeath05-28-07, 02:55 AM | DR/Crystal is an interesting concept... I'm not sure anything actually has DR/Crystal. Although, even DR/-- probalby wouldn't bee all that game-breaking. I'm not so sure about Eldritch Siphon. It seems to be a little out of left field, not really all that characteristic of psionicists or warlocks. Maybe you could do something with psionic focus instead? Maybe one ability that you have while you maintain focus, and another you can use by expending your focus. |
| Scalamander05-28-07, 02:46 PM | Since the Eldritch Disciple and Theurge get the normal warlock damage reduction except against cold iron, I wanted something that would fit with the theme of combining psionics and eldritch powers. At first I was thinking of Deep Crystal but decided that was too difficult for the average player to obtain and changed it to just crystal. A fair of amount of psionic weapons do seem to incorporate crystal and I think of it as similar to silver in Faerun and adamatine in Eberron. As for replacing Eldritch Siphon with another ability, I was thinking of allowing the Eldritch Savant to add power points to his eldritch blasts as damage on a 2:1 basis. Perhaps another requirement would be that you have to expend your psionic focus to do so. By the way, any help in renaming some of these abilities would be great. I'm getting a bit sick of prefacing everything with "Eldritch" |
| forsaken111105-28-07, 05:49 PM | First question: What is psionic blast? Second: Eldritch Siphon - I just don't like it. It creates power points out of nothing, which is a big no-no. Maybe you could change it to: Vampiric Psiblast (Su): At 2nd level an eldritch savant gains the Vampiric Psiblast as a bonus invocation. This eldritch essence invocation allows you to change your eldritch blast into a vampiric psiblast. Any living creature struck by a beshadowed blast must succeed on a Willpower save or lose 1pp + 1pp per 2 savant class levels. You gain 1/2 of the drained power points added to your own power pool. If the affected creature has no power points remaining, and/or does not have access to powers at all, on a failed save it instead loses 2 point of intelligence, wisdom or charisma determined by which attribute influences the save DC of the savant's powers. If a savant uses more than one attribute to determine save DC's, he may choose among those available. A successful save halves the number of power points drained, minimum of 1, and negates the attribute damage entirely. You do not gain power points if the affected creature successfully saves. Vampiric Psiblast: Lesser; 4th; Eldritch Essence By the way, any help in renaming some of these abilities would be great. I'm getting a bit sick of prefacing everything with "Eldritch" Okay Powerweave (Sp): Mindweave, Psiweave, Mindblast, Psiblast Greatreach Blast (Sp): Mindreach blast, psireach blast, Powerblast, Psiblast, Mindblast |
| Scalamander05-28-07, 11:17 PM | I took some of the above suggestions into account and tidied up the class generally. One thing of note is the removal of the Eldritch Siphon ability which was felt to be too left field for a psion or warlock. In its place I have decided to give each different discipline an ability to add to their Eldritch Blast. While I have the first tier of abilities generally worked out I still need some help on the Dire Eldritch Blessings. Any further comments on balance, quality and all that would be appreciated as well. |
