| dolphin4902-23-07, 04:47 PM | im thinking of playing a erudite in my mext campagin, and i wanted to know if any of you found his unique powers a day to hindering? i like the idea of knowing a lot of powers but not sure if its worth the price. |
| lucas_william02-23-07, 06:21 PM | At lower levels an erudite is hard to play, but not impossible. Around 6th level the erudite becomes more manageable with four unique powers per day. In addition, the availability to expand your repertoire of powers could cause problems if the campaign has limited psionic influence (such as psions and power stones are rare). If this is the case, psion might make a better choice. |
| Tralan02-23-07, 06:48 PM | Since play began, My now 15th level psion has used 4 powers on a regular basis. 4. The rest were all used at some point, but mostly as backup powers. I almost wish I had been an Erudite instead, simply because they recieve Psicrystal Affinity for free at level 1. Not a feat I want to waste taking as a psion, but wouldn't mind getting it for free. |
| Ichor Spellka02-23-07, 07:01 PM | I'm currently playing an erudite, started at 9th and he's now 11th. So far, I'm vastly enjoying him. I like all the options it gives, but I'm very conscious of the unique powers per day. The limitation is mainly if you want to use combinations of powers. For instance, the share pain + vigor + psicrystal + empathic transfer combo, which is very effective as a psion, is a lot more resources as an erudite. My group lacks any other healer, and thus it can seem like I'm playing a psionic cleric. The downside is, if something comes up, I may not be able to heal as the day goes on. For instance, last session one of the party died somewhat spectacularly, and I used psychic revivify to bring him back. But seeing as how I'd previously buffed and attacked, I was left unable to heal the rest of the party, and had to use a power stone of empathic transfer to return that member to consciousness. So long as you pay attention to what you're doing, and hold back on using multiple powers when one will do though, the erudite is quite useful, especially when it comes to periodic use of powers that generally wouldn't be worth taking as a psion. |

I've covered most of them and I don't think I could live using just 4 powers...and my psions are no where near level 15.... |
| ElyasRavenwood02-24-07, 02:22 PM | I am currently playing a 4th level erudite. I enjoy the flexibility of the class. I do find with the unique powers per day, I have to be careful with the powers I choose to use. At 4th level my character has 3 unique powers per day. Without thoughtful planning you can quickly go though the powers, and you can run through your power points like water. My character has the imprint power stone feat, and he has one power stone for each power in his repertoire. In a pinch I can use these power stones for utility powers like detect psionics, and mind link. For my unique powers I usually use astral construct, swarm of crystals, and touch of health (expanded knowledge). As for the scarcity of powers, the campaign is just starting, and we shall see. I plan to ask the dm if he could when rolling for random treasure to replace any arcane scroll with a power stone. Our party is fairly diverse. There is a Naraphim rogue 4th level (something sladi like from the planar handbook) a half orc barbarian/ sword sage 1/3 a human Cleric/Crusader 3/1 and my character a human erudite 4th level. |
| dolphin4903-16-07, 04:20 PM | do you find the xp penalty hard to deal with |
| ElyasRavenwood03-18-07, 04:16 PM | What do you mean by Experience penalty? If you are referring to the experience expenditure I need to make in order to add a power to the character’s repertoire? It is 20 exp x erudite level. On page 62 of the Expanded Psionics handbook in the side bar power and Xp costs, it talks about making 1 experience point equal to 5 gold pieces. The wizard must spend 100 gold pieces per spell level to add a spell to his spell book. This is the cost of writing the spell in his spell book. It comes out to 100 gp per page, and a spell takes 1 page per spell level. A wizard on the other hand has a spell book. This spell book can fall in a lake, river, and the campfire. What else, the Barbarian can use sundry pages as toilet paper. In other worlds lots of bad things can happen to a wizards traveling spell book. It is much more difficult for an Erudite to loose his Repertoire of powers. Lets see, his mind can be eaten by a mind flayer, he can fall victim to a feeble mind spell, I am sure there are others, but they are much more drastic. |
| awaken_D_M_golem03-18-07, 04:28 PM | The Erudite begs to use the Elemental Envoy feat. If you hand your DM the EE as your 1st level char , "he" will smack you. Not bad at 2nd level , average at 3rd , then falls behind. Don't pick the powers the EE uses as psi-likes. EE gets un-weildy or weak later , no problem , just dismiss it. Just as the entry says so. Now you've got a feat slot available. Either a PHB2 retrain - nothing into something , or a psy-ref . Now you have a psicrystal and a feat ; pick which level you want to do this. Erudite lets Clerics be more healy , and Wizards be less blasty , Psions be more sneaky. |
