| Arthurh353506-16-07, 02:30 PM | From my reading of the Psion variant class for Erudites, they can only learn Discipline powers from their two every level, yet the Erudite (for enough XP and money) can technically lean any Discipline power one level lower than what they can manifest. That seems slightly odd to me. Shouldn't you be able to learn any power, eventually? Only the Discipline powers are 'harder' and require you to be +1 level over them. A little confused. |
| InkBlot06-16-07, 05:45 PM | Your two free powers each level can only come from the psion/wilder list. The powers you spend XP for can only come from the discipline (egoist, shaper, nomad, et al) lists. It is kind of messed up. So is most of Complete Psionics. Personaly, I houserule that erudites can spend XP to learn psion/wilder powers as well as discipline powers. I also houserule the cost to be based on power level, instead of erudite level, but that's another matter. |
| QuarianRex06-16-07, 10:35 PM | Remember too that as a Psion variant Erudites still have access to standard psionic research and so have access to just about any power of any list at any time if they have the xp to spend and the weeks to devote to meditation. This is above and beyond the quicker standard Erudite method. |

This is above and beyond the quicker standard Erudite method. IIRC, the psionic research only allows you to learn powers if you have a slot to devote to them (per the Expanded Psionics) and like I mentioned, the actual Erudite rules actually only state that you can learn discipline powers for the XP cost from a Powerstone or teacher. There is a quote there that talks about the fact that a Erudite is unlimited in learning powers, but it is in a flavor text area, not in the rules per se. My DM actually made a ruling that an Erudite can learn any power on the Psion (and the discipline lists) by just using power stones and/or a teacher; learning Discipline power follows the standard rules of maximum power -1. So I'm pretty set. I'm pretty sure this is actually the way it was supposed to be set up. Learning Craft Powerstone is now a very high priority, OTOH! |
| Syrkres06-18-07, 05:11 PM | Well actually if you read it one could argue that the discipline (egoist, shaper, nomad, et al) lists are Psion lists? You have to be a Psion to use them, you just are a specialist Psion. No where does it say that an Erudite can't learn from the Psion Discipline lists, infact it goes on to say that they can learn Disciplines, just one lower than their maximum caster level. Until reading this thread in fact that is how I intrepreted it and didn't even give it a second thought until now. Even at 8th level I think I have only pulled 3 discipline powers anyways, so I haven't abused it, and always been a level lower then my current caster level, so in effect picking a lower level power than my maximum power I could normally pick. I don't see anything wrong with that. Even from a co-GM point of view. The biggest level it's probably going to effect is 5th level when they can get the Energy Missle, but after that, it really happers more to pick a lower level power over a current level power. |

Syrkes, as you are just replying to the thread after me, I'm assuming you were replying directly about my post. You seem to be getting things backwards. The Psion Erudite rules states two ways that an Erudite can learn powers. He can learn two a level, every level; and can learn only Discipline powers with a teacher and for an XP cost. (The way listed to research a power in Expanded Psionics states you still have to devote a slot on your progression table, so doesn't really apply.) There's technically no way to learn the standard Psion list powers (ie. non-Discipline powers) for an Euridte beyond leveling. Even though the Euridte has the flavor-text of "unlimited learning of all powers.) |
| ShortlivedFlame06-29-07, 10:34 PM | If I may comment...the text of the erudite actually does seem to imply that the learning of powers from other sources (power stones and the minds of others). "Next, the erudite must make a Psicraft check (DC 15 + power's level) for each power he is trying to learn to see if he understands that power. If the selected power is not on his class list or on any of the select discipline lists, he automatically fails this check." This seems to imply that if it is on his class list (ie, the same as the basic psion/wilder list) he doesn't automatically fail, and so it seens it might be possible to learn it with this method. |

Just one of the errors they made when making the CP. While the flavor text and the rules text seem to indicate the ability to learn any Psion power via xp/time/source etc. they then name the heading of the rule "Learning Discipline Powers". I don't know if there has been any official clarification on this, but RAW it would have to be a DM call for you to be able to learn powers from the base list. |
