| The_Mess03-16-08, 10:51 PM | Speaking of the Erudite, what's a reasonable number of powers to allow an erudite character created above first level to have? There seems to be no clear answer, given his powers known aren't set by feats, but through RP events and skill checks. |
| Lycanthromancer03-17-08, 12:04 AM | As many XP as you're willing to spend. The people I've played under (read: the DM, not...anything else, you perv :P) never allow me any more XP than the minimum necessary to reach whatever level I'm starting at, so if I want to do item creation or use my XP for other purposes (such as this), I have to burn my level for it. Which is really unfair for an erudite, if you ask me... |
| The_Mess03-17-08, 10:11 AM | Unfair to Erudites and Item Creation specialists, as well as anybody using a LA race in a game using buy-off rules (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/reducingLevelAdjustments.htm). I voted for starting at a half-way point between levels, but I haven't been able to convince any DMs so far. |
| Lycanthromancer03-17-08, 02:32 PM | I suppose you'll catch up eventually, but if you played your way up from level 1 you'd be gaining more XP than everyone else anyway, due to the XP gravy-train. But still, having a level X erudite with no powers known just isn't kosher. I guess you could try to talk your DM into allowing you to convert your gp into XP at a rate of 5-to-1. You'll be poorer, but you'll at least have your class abilities be useful. That, and in a non-psionic game, erudites won't last long. |
| CrimsonDeath03-17-08, 03:39 PM | But still, having a level X erudite with no powers known just isn't kosher. He'll still have the powers he learns for free as he levels up. But if that's all he has, he'd probably be better off as a Psion... |
| KyussWren04-09-08, 12:10 AM | What is this XP gravy train you speak of? |
| Lycanthromancer04-09-08, 12:18 AM | A lower level character in a party of higher level characters earns more experience points from the same encounters. If you take an item creationist and keep him one level behind everyone else at all times, you get a lot more magic items (and therefore power) while earning a lot more XP to do the crafting with. It's especially noticeable with wizards, since psions don't have access to most of the spells and feats that items require. Erudites, being the psionic wizards so to speak, do crafting well, so long as they can choose powers that are similarly-themed as the spells required for item craftage; this is DM-fiat, however. |
